Firstly....did phone the doc....he is not to keen to go look up all the stuff and tell me what is what.

Secondly I have had TWO kwaks prescribing me stuff that was banned after I specifically told them I cycle competitively and he must double check what he prescribes. Epic FAIL!!

Dopingfree SA is closed until 10 January 2011.

So no help from the pros.....turning to TheHub for some info now.... (Scary stuff!! :P )

So I am still struggling with this damn glandular fever.....or that is what the doc tells me I have....

Personally I think I am just getting old but what do I know....

Basically have been taking various multi vitamins, intragam injections etc. just to get the immune up. Nothing really works. The moment I do one or two hard sessions on the bike, the glads swell up and I have this flu like symptoms. Again typical of old age glandular fever!

Anyway. Stumbled upon this thread: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/90510-coxsackie-virus/page__st__20__p__1245818__hl__coxsackie__fromsearch__1#entry1245818

One or two times the Multi vitamin Gericomplex came up.

It needs a prescription because it is Schedule 5. <_<

So.....further the research goes.....

The main reason for its schedule 5 listing is the ingredient: Dimethylaminoethanol Bitartrate.

The Ausies (and most likely Safas now) uses it in party drugs thus the schedule 5 requirement.

This took me to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimethylaminoethanol_bitartrate

According to this article it is also known as Dimethylethanolamine which, according to WADA’s list, is a S6 Stimulant. “Prohibited IN-Competition”.

My conclusion is that I can use Gericomplex but only OUT of competition. (Stop using 48 hours prior to cycle race? – nowhere is “In-competition” defined in anywhere!!!??)

Interestingly this is related to the same substance the two SA rugby players tested positive for earlier this year!!!

Anyone that can shed some light on this matter?

Please??

What exactly do you want to know?

If it is on the banned list then that should answer the is it banned question.

One thing I know about glandular fever is that you should not really be training if you still have its symptoms. You could damage your heart irrecoverably.

Spinnekop go see a sports dr like John Patricios in Sandton-he will help. I would stay away from the crowd at HPC in Pta.

I am on Gericomplex, AIM products, and Immonova + for my Coxsachie. Recently a homeopath added Colostrum Milk Chews and Wellnes Formula by Source natural. The last 2 is specific for fighting the Virus. In my limited and humble opinion I would say the glandular fever is a by product of something else, maybe Coxsachie or EBV?

Have u been tested if not get a sports dr to properly diagnosis you then move from there.

@The Break, okay so what you can google will give you the general stuff but the symptoms I had-which is what a lot of the guys have-read Tread the last edition not the newest and see what Amy Jane Mundy went thru. But it depends, generally you feel like ****...no energy, low energy, no power, you get repeats of ilnessess for me it was flu-also muscular pain all over the body, fever and that is why I am gussing Spinnekop has something similar (Hope it is not the case) . It being a virus u feel lightheaded, and like your head is in cotton wool, you have difficulty concentrating.Your HR is all over the place but mostly spiking and high, look at the thread http://www.thehubsa...._1#entry1245818 and u will see some other hubbers had this as well and their symptoms

I am on Gericomplex for 6 months now (Geriatric complex as refereed to by my wife). Also had a strain of the dreaded Coxsachie. Slowly getting over it now. Took the Dr's forever to diagnose!

Sounds bad and long term enough that I would take the stuff if it was the only effective one known and I knew I was out for the next season or so. I do not mean it is ok to take banned substances, but I do believe that if you are worried about being tested and also need to take care of your health as a first priority, that there is a doping regulation that covers such cases whereby you are able to get permission to take the stuff from CSA so long as there is a clear case here. The details I am not entirely up to date with, but I do remember reading something along these lines in the doping regulations.

Busy talking to Drugfree SA. They are, as always, VERY HELPFUL!

Thus far it looks like you can use Gericomplex OUT of competition.....what exactly that means is still uncertain.

Waiting for a response from the guys before I start popping the stuff.

In essence it is a tonic/multivitamin with a stimulant added. The stimulant makes you feel happy.

Wheelsuck.....yes, the symptoms as mentioned by you are all there. They come and go though...I have good days and bad days.

Went out riding this AM.....NO POWER in the legs.....now you start thinking....is it the virus or is it the long ride of Saturday kicking in.....

Went to 3 doctors, ending up at a decent? sports doc in Menlyn. Paid her almost R4 000 for tests and I am NOT prepared to pay another sent. That and needles....I HATE *(*%)$^ NEEDLES!!!!! :( :( :o

So by so I am prepared to suffer through this and die rather that go for another round of R4k with needle prics in my arm and butt!

This is what gets me about the hub!

"Stay away from this one and that one, Mr. X is the new wonder kid, use this and that natural cr@p, etc, etc....".

Says the one that doesn't know that EBV=Glandular Fever=Mononeucleosis=Kissing's disease and that the symptoms of this viral infection is severe fatigue, sore and swollen glands, myositis(sore muscles) and sometimes fever-blister-like sore's in the mouth.

Please note that there is a reason why top international athletes go to the HPC @ Tuks and not to dr. who-ever in where-ever.

@Regard

I had a bad experience with a Dr at HPC, so called expert diagnosed me with severe pronation, didnt even do gait analysis etc, turns out I supinate. The physicians and podiatrist at the Sports clinic sorted me out. So the so called non Dr that u refer to is quite well known DR Jon Patricios and the podiatrist was Frank Dubowitz that got the gait diagnosis right.

So I am not following fads etc so get the facts before you start attacking and maybe then you can make a meaningfulll contribution to this thread.

Been there, done that, got the Glandular Fever t-shirt. There is not much you can do about it. Take the stimulant, it will help you cope with the exhaustion. Don't worry about WADA or drug free sport or anything like that 'cos I certainly doubt you gonna have the physical ability to place in any race while you sick, so you aint gonna get tested :(
