I have been using monorails front and rear for more than a year now without replacing them. They wear pretty well but I would agree with the part about dodgy grip - definately not the worst I have used but they are quite skittish.

They are however, very fast rolling tyres, a dealmaker for me - I just try to make up for the unpredictable grip by being a bit more careful around the corners

I used to run a mono on the front and a crossmark on the back.... verry dodge wen it comes to grip. changed to racing ralph and the improvement is huge. worth the R400/tyre.

Erm I am definitly doing this for the wrong reasons !! Going down a straight road I really don't care how fast I am going , but I wanna go as fast around a corner as possible !!! Same goes for the up and downhills . Slow uphill and bomb the downhills . So I want the tyres with the most grip and I don't care if it is 10 grams over the "limit " .

Try searching on the hub for some posts on this. As far as i can remember the best voted combos were the monorail front and crossmark back, or the (Conti's)mountain king front and race king back.

Im using the monorail/crossmark combo and (im not the fastest rider) very happy. With my Kenda Karmas i found it tended to slip out under me but the monorail has not done that.

That is why I think that your riding style will be the main factor when getting a tyre/tyres for your bike . For me there is nothing that compare to the Karma's in dry/mud/sand/water . And believe me when I say I have tried most of the brand out there and eventually settled on the Kenda's .

I was pondering on using a monorail as a front tyre. I get mixed reviews on this. Thing like dodgy grip, wears quikly...

Anybody using these?

Monorail /Crossmark mix at the moment , only realy works on hardpack surface , going over to Specialized.

I used mono rail front/crossmark rear, grip is not a word I would associate with the Monorail.

Just changed to racing Ralphs 2.25 front and 2.1 rear, lighter more grip and I will update on durability post the ATTAKWAS.

I just bought a monorail for the front and crossmark for the back...Have not fitted them yet though- want to give them a try for the Attekwas

Heard it is a good combo, so kinda dissapointed to hear the monorail does not have a lot of grip.

Current setup is a 2.2 raceking F and 2.0 Raceking B. Absolutely zero grip on hardpack with some loose gravel around the corners ( Did montague pass and was standing still coming down). Lightning fast rolling though.

Did a Mountainking both front and rear before that. Very good.

If the crossmark/monorail does not work out I will try the infamous MountainK F/ Raceking R combo.

Will let you know how the monorail performs

Rode at the Cycle Park yest with a couple mates, bumped into a fellow COW.

He's also riding MT Kings F & R, Rear has been turned (tread running other way to front), apparently much better power transfer.

I've gone for the monorail Front and crossmark rear combo. It works absolutely fine on hardpack and loose gravel but when it is wet it is as slippery as a President on a rape charge!

I agree, running the same config....and the I could not never get the monorail to run "true" the tread always seems to wobble and I tried everything

My bike originally came with Monorails, which wore quickly, and are really not suited to a multi-terrain ride. Throw in some wetness, mud and sand - they were hopeless. Have now gone for Maxxi's Ignitor up front, Kenda Nevegal in the rear, both UST. Lot of rolling resistance on hardpack, but they grip like anything. Self-cleaning in the mud, they have pulled me through the bog that is currently the spruit with no worries.
