I have suddenly got knee pain and need some advice.

I started cycling in October and have slowly been building my fitness and distance. My last ride was on December the 25th a short 50km ride and I have had no pain on my knee during a week of rest until last night while I was resting on the coach, I have been planning to get back on the bike this morning but was afraid to aggravate the knee further.

If it helps the pain on the front.

Any advise on what would cause the pain and should I get back on the bike?

Many possible causes, but the easiest to check is bike set-up. Have one done as even 1 cm in saddle height can make a difference.

It is however impossible to say how serious an injury is. I had a pain in my left knee after a 17 hour race and then never again after that. However, I had to see a physio for my right knee.

So I guess what I'm saying: have the bike set-up done and then try it. If it isn't any better, go see a GOOD physio. He should be able to tell you what the cause is, how serious it is and how to avoid aggravating it further.

A search of this forum will also yield a lot of results and maybe some ideas, but if it doesn't get better, have it checked out. It's worth the peace of mind.

I'm trying to understand here, so bear with me. You rode 50k's a week ago. No pain until last night...

Dude, it can be anything! I'll go out on a limb to say not the 50k's of last week, otherwise you'd have felt it after the ride - or the day after. You could have sat on your one leg when watching a movie. My knee hurt like hell after that, esp if I fell asleep. It can be something like that. Options are endless.

Not being sarcastic here, all I'm saying is that more than a week on getting the first pains, leads me to thinking it's something different you did to your knee. Very likely (which is why I used that example) something habitual/sub-consciously. I often find a pain somewhere and only a day later realise e.g. - oh, I was sitting like this with my bare foot resting on the PC chair's leg for a couple of hours yesterday... small wonder my mid-foot is bit of a beach. It happens!

If it is not seriously hurting, go for a gentle spin and see, but make it gentle and keep your cadence high to be sure you're gentle on the knee. But like I said, I doubt whether it was last week's ride that caused anything. If it hurts badly, take a day or two's break to evaluate.

If you do find you're getting a recurrence of it and it's after rides, I'll agree and say for a first thing have your setup checked by somebody who knows his stuff.

All of this said - I'm no doc, physio or anything of the like! Just my experiences.

Failing what SeeBee suggested it could be a result of leg muscle imbalance that is affecting your knee.

Having recently started cycling (october 2010) and now resting may well have encouraged some muscles to strengthen while leaving others unchanged or in a weaker state, resulting in an imbalance causing pain.

If it was bike setup the pain would start during the ride already (mine did)...

Incidently, pain at the front of the knee generally means your saddle is too low. After getting a pro setup my knees hurt. I lifted the saddle about 15mm, and have not had any issues yet. Pro setups are a very good starting point and you should look at getting it done, and then tweak from there.

I am based in Vanderbijlpark in the Vaal Triangle.

hey a fellow vaalie! im also in vanderbijlpark! if the pain continues i would suggest having it looked at by your GP who will then recommend the appropriate action wich would probably be one of three things, 1. specialist ( i suggest Dr Aukamp in vanderbijlpark)2. Physio or 3 a biokinetikist recommend Michael dont recall is surname but i have his number if you would need it...... good luck!! hope you feel better soon

Uhm, bike set-up is one possibility.

And, do not increase your training distance by 10% per week, man.

This can be overload and lead to injuries or niggles.

10% per week sounds pretty moderate to me? Maybe his knees are complaining because they want to ride more. My knees get grumpy if I don't get the miles in.

Ja, whatever you do you're not likely to find an accurate diagnosis here :P

For a beginner, it is good advice.

Luke, you are no beginner. :P :D
