Normally the riders get a "sort-of" seeding at Babbas, in that the faster riders naturally gravitate to the front of the bunch. They are also mostly regulars, and know each other.

At the normal starting line there is also enough room where riders can safely jocky for a position in safety during the neutral zone to further string out the bunch.

Riding ethics is still important though. For that reason the commissaires repeat that the use of ipods and other devices is prohibited. Imagine trying to pass someone, while screaming "track" at them and they ignore you because they can't hear you. It happens all too often, with accidents happening as a result.

A serious concern on the last race was riders ignoring pleas to keep as far left as possible, as the road is used by motor vehicles as well. Most of the drivers will slow down, and even yield to a bunch of cyclists. Not always though. A prime example occured just before the start. Retief (commissaire) asked riders to move off the tar road. At that time a SUV driven by an elderly gentleman came roaring past, ignoring signals from the marshals to slow down. The vehicle passed within a metre of the front cyclists, never slowing down, and the driver looking hell-bent on taking anyone out infront of him.

Oh yes, there is just one rant I had about yesterday's race - I always thought the tar section was a neutral zone. But that dude on the 4 wheeler went of like a crazy man yesterday!

Had the same thought while still on the tar. They say it's neutral and that the racing start on the gravel road, but it's basically impossible to keep up without riding in someone's slip

That start was insane! I was in the middle of the bunch and had to do some low flying to catch you okes. I always feel bad pushing to the front at the start, but it doesn't seem to bother some other people who certainly don't belong there. I usually tell them "you better hope I don't pass you later" when they push past :)

MJ, you rode like a beast yesterday; well done on your result! And thanks for stopping and helping me when I crashed.

Thank god, I thought it was just me squeezing my lungs out my eyeballs at the start!
