not available in SA till 2nd quarter 2011. but can be had from CRC or bikeinn. I just had my 705 waranty swopped out and was hoping to upgrade, but Garmin SA informed me of this. Just on the warranty thing, i am glad i bought my 705 here in SA, cause Garmin were really good about waranty swop when i had some moisture inside mine. try easygis.co.za for garmin stuff locally.

I personally think its a bit of a waste for mtb, rather go edge 500 if mtb

Hey rouxtjie, why do say this? Dont you think that you actully need the maps more for mtb? Just asking as I am also looking at getting the 800 but dont want to waste my money

Edge 800 for MTB and Edge 500 is only road cycling (my opinion) . I have the Edge 800 and had the Edge 705 and used the maps loads when MTB on holiday in places where I did not the know the area. The tracking functionality when in a forest is great and saved me a couple of times. Garmin's service is SA is great and will support products out of the county at a service fee and if parts are here.

The problem I have with maps for mtb is that mtb trails don't exist according to garmap(You have to buy a basemap for the 800...more money), so once you hit a piece of singletrack you simply get this riding into this ehter effect. Yes you will be fine on the tar roads and district roads but being a mtb'er means we try and get off them asap into the trails. Another big problem for me is that your battery life is not as good as the edge 500 because of the fancy and bigger colour display. The edge 500 allows you to follow breadcrumbs that will work much better if you want to "follow a map". I do this regularly...Go to garmin connect, download a map of a trail I like and bob is your mother's brother. The "map" you download is actually a collection of GPS waypoints and because of the highly sensitive GPS receiver knows exactly where you are in relation to the map. So the 500 has all the functions of the 800 except the mapping function, which is useless to us anyway. O and its way more expensive and heavier

I can see it being a great tool for roadies and dont get me wrong its not worse than the edge 500 but the extra moola aint worth the cheese

Also think it depends what you want to use the Garmin for ...

I was on the verge of buying a Garmin, but then decided for my purposes it is better to save the money and use my cellphone for tracking. I used the cheapest Nokia with GPS to try out over the weekend - and the data is very accurate ... I used Endomondo, but there are lots off fitness tracking apps that can be used for every almost outdoor activity under the sun

The only concerns are the heart rate monitor integration, as well as a robust bike mount for those moments where you do an involuntary dismount at full speed ... but even for these concerns there are solutions

305, 705 and 800 have base maps as standard 500 does not and cannot be added.

Additional road maps can be added to 705 and 800 on a chip card.

Cool, i have the 705 but will get 800 when it's locally available in SA as the HR function is more accurate and the mounting bracket is stronger.
