Riding our first so all routes are new to me, the new profile does look a bit less agressive in the tailend. The first real climb at 140k will be a good indication of those that have put in the extra miles. May need to pack takkies for those 10k's. Bring it on looking forward to the challenge.

Wonder if the new route also will be unmarked, see there are alot of turn-offs where one can go wrong.

Hi Everyone

Firstly, thanks for all the support and understanding with the route change this year. Please bare in mind that this decision was not taken lightly but at the end of the day – Rider Safety is our main concern.

Rest assured that we have considered every option available to us, by spending last week in the Baviaanskloof.

We are very excited about the new route!!!! – more info is available on our website: www.transbaviaans.co.za

Looking forward to seeing all of you at the 2011 Trans Baviaans!

I am sooooooooooooooo pissed about this... I really wanted to ride the Baviaans Kloof...

I hope everything subsides by Saturday and they change the route back again!!

I am all for safety... but it means I have to wait a year again to do this...

F*%k it... if the route is remains changed... I will go and do it alone in December!

See you guys there on Sat...

Good luck to all...

I think everyone will be disappointed, but as stated by Wikus rider safety is paramount. I was looking forward to the adventure of all the watercrossings as I've only done last year which was apparently very dry. But, crossing a 1-1.5m deep river at night carrying your bike above your head is probably not the safest thing in the world, and when things go wrong it would be difficult for support to get to the rider.

It will still be an amazing ride and the MAC 'replacement' looks like a killer. Obviously the new route alters the planning a bit as to what to send where etc. but it will be a great new adventure for us all.

Still can't wait

Not many cyclists will see this view, due to it possibly getting dark by the time you get here.....post-3523-0-71373200-1312828394.jpg

Hats off to Wikus and the team for pulling off such a big change at the last minute in order to ensure that the event can still go ahead.

Personally I think the route change is gonna add a whole new challenge to the race and level the playing fields - the course is brand new for everyone...

Fortunately for me I'll be enjoying the route in the comfort of my Hilux, but for those who will be suffering through it and have no idea what to expect from the new route, maybe this video clip will help - its a Google Earth fly through of the new Groot Rivier course

It's a real pity about the route change, as nothing beats the "Baviaans", But I suppose there is a real danger of loosing a cyclist in one of the river crossings in the dark and also not being able to get support vehicles across to him.

So hats off to Wikus and his team for making the event still go ahead. It must be a logistical nightmare changing something like this in the last week - Thanks Eco-bound.

It's exciting to do something different. I've ridden this route before and beware anyone who thinks its easy. The climb to the Telkom tower is a monster - in my opinion worse than MAC, especially the last km when you turn right onto the Elands river road. It's surface is quiet bad - rocky and rutted.

The decsent down to Patensie is dangerous, everyone take care here. Also rocky and rutted and steep.

Very exciting. See you in Willow-more.

I hope that the nice braai at Check 3 from old route is still at one of the new checkpoints.
