I see quite a few nice threads about the whole polar vs garmin here, but this is for my wife (needs to be small, stylish, you guys know the drill ) and more general fitness training, Tredmill, IDT etc, than outdoor cycling. I have been looking at the polar ft7 & 60 with calories burned and 3 HR training zones. I don't know if the garmin's also has these HR zones as a feature and if it is "neccesary"? I have seen that the garmin seem more value for money, like the FR60 coming with a footpot for the same money as the cheapest polar mentioned above. I guess the detail garmin gives you of your whole workout is a added bonus. I also see a few mentions of the sigma f9, small and stylish it seems for R500, is this all she needs and a good product with good after sales ? No, not looking at Sunto, don't want to get confused if she is going for a jog or deepsea diving  . Any suggestions and advice please ?

Any old cheapie that will show you calories burned, a few zones and your average heart rate, will do. In the gym, most the modern machines show you you heart rate and or calories burned anyway. For people with weight loss in mind, the "calories burned" feature is a great motivator.

In my honest opinion - don't waste your bucks on the Polars and the Garmins. CWC online has a whole range of Sigma HRMs that will suit your (wife's) needs.

Bought a Sigma cheaply off Thomo from the hub a couple of years ago and its still going strong, no complaints about it yet, simple menu system, water proof enough, maybe I'm just not used to anything better or with more functionality but it gets me through the long rides without popping a lung or cramping in both legs, front and back, top and bottom, like I used to. Oh and you can replace the battery in the chest strap chop-chop yourself.

I have a very sheap Sigma. for about 14 months.

No problems and you can change the battrey yourself.

Sigma is german as far as I have it so should not be an issue, just new on the market in SA, a bit more than a year.

Sigma is not inferior and actually not as CHEAP as CWC are flogging them. he has somehow got his hands on a consignment at a ridicolous price. i had used the Pc15 whilst training for iron man in 2008. have sold many watches to happy customers. i was VERY happy with it and it is 100 % ECG accurate and is German made. just beware the heart rate signals do not work in salt water.

I got PC9 (old style one) from Chris a year ago with the intention of getting something "better". Its been 10mths now and I still got the PC9 - actually I use it every day on my commute to work.

Originaly I wanted more functionality but it gives me all the info I really care about.

Would I recommend you buy it from Chris at his price? Hell yes, and if your not happy with it you can easily flog it but I doubt you would.

The only "issue" with the PC9 (and all your other entry level HRMs) is the strap is not coded. But thats only an issue if your in a group 24/7.

I did find at one stage a problem with the strap not being picked up but figured it out that I needed to wet the strap before putting it on. Same issue I have with the Treadmill's strap so not unique to the Sigma.

I have a entry level Sigma Onyx. They claim it is coded, but when I go under electric or telephone wires my heart rate jump by 20 plus. My friend had the same problem. He now use a pc15 and I bought a R300 cheapie at Kings Cycle. Both work much better.
