No not the people (well maybe actually), but has anyone noticed how bike designs now match how large human beings are in comparison to say the 70's/80's and 90's.

Eddy, all slim and sexy looking back then:

Eddy, now feeling rather middle-aged with a SUV in the driveway and a few extra pounds:

Colnago, hello trim, lean fighting machine:

Colnago, hello darling, how many pies did you have last night?

Finally, the one that's spent too long living in Philly and enjoying the cheese steak, Mr Felt:

Maybe it's just me but most modern bikes I see today remind me of Mickey Rourke, all overly inflated and rather plump looking. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder but one wonders how fatter they'll be getting in the next 5 years

a steel tube has 'x' amount of strength, an aluminium tube of the same size and thickness doesn't, so in order to increase the strength of the alu tube, you have to increase it's size (whilst keeping wall thickness minimal for weight purposes) or else it'll just collapse like beer can, same goes for carbon. you can still buy steel frames to day that look like those of old. you can read up on it here

Yup its the use of carbon fibre that makes the bike fatter as it needs numerous layers. Added layers to certain areas of the frame makes it stronger- take the chainstay and BB for example. And vice versa the thinness of some seatstays (Cervelo).

it's a fashion thing. Everyone criticised Cannondale's oversized tubing when it surfaced, now it's very common. Same with the Lefty fork and BB30. Already there is a fringe breakaway back to skinny steel bikes, as there will always be a few hippies that cannot let go.

Hard to like the new Raleigh road bikes, they seem intent on killing off the brand in favour of scott.

My carbon Raleigh may just be a classic soon...
