The terms "best" and "Not the hardshell type" are almost mutually exclusive...

What are his requirements? Lo weight? Bike protection? Is he going to fly with it or just use it in his car?

I've had expierience with the soft(ish) Bikepod, but I had a broken spoke and buggered powertap after a flight to the US, so I think the only safe option is a hardshell.

Saying that, I am looking at the Chainreactions bikebag for my next flight. Cheap, soft and reasonable padding.

I bought a bike bag from CRC and i was really impressed.

Comes with wheel bags and it's pretty well padded. It has wheels to make transport easier.

My Mtb is 17" and road bike is 54cm,both fit in easy.

That's the one I've been looking at! I'm going to need it to fly my baby down for the Argus. Good price, but I see complaints about the handle being too low. Has this been modified or do you not find it a problem?

Luckily only the baggage (mis)handlers at Schiphol and CT to touch her. Hopefully they'll be gentle this time....

Limo.....

I have a bike bag that is lying in the garage that you can have for FREE!

Just plain forward normal bag.

I won't fly with it though.........Flying requires stuff from Scicon! Nothing less. <_<

Wise man. Hardshell is the only safe option (for those with big wallets)

I am flying out in July to SA for a Mtb race and was looking for a bag and took a chance with this.

Much thicker padding than some of the other bags i looked at and it's much cheaper.I haven't noticed that the handle is to low down.

I will still wrap my bike in bubble wrap though.

I have flown with my mtb in a carton box (the kind you get from LBS for free) a couple of times no problem. Box always looks like it got handled rough, but bike fine.

Have also flown with my roadbike just as a push on - no packaging or nothing about 5 times also no problems. They actually treat it with some respect etc instead of just bagage they can toss around.

Think the soft case is prob safer than the carton box- they guys seem to be pretty carefull with stuff if they know it is valuable.

+ 1

or Box it... soft bike bags does nothing for your bike when they kick it, throw it out of a plane's cargo hold etc etc etc
