Hi,

I would like to know where does all the money go that race organizers get from all the entry fees?

Lets take ave price for race entry this year has been R 190.

They get say about 5000 entries per big race i.e. races classified as classic with prize money of R 50 000 or higher.

5000 x 190 = 950 000

Prize money 70 000

Advertizing 30 000 (pamplets, online entries etc)

Marshalls 30 000

Medals 20 000

Metro officers 120 000

PPA @ R2 per rider 10 000 (what needs to be paid to CSA)

Race commisioners 10 000

Race tec 50 000 ( to lay timing mats and look at a computer screen)

So that leaves about R 610 000

Venues are normally sponsered as they get revenue from cyclist spending money the venue and from advertizing. Refresments at the end is also normally sponsered

Races are normally organized by NPO's in conjunction with cycling clubs. So let allocate say R 160 000 to them for their effort.

So then WHAT HAPPENS TO THE REST OF THE R 450 000?

Please if someone can shed some light on the issue it would be appreciated. The totals that I use where from various sources so do not know how accurate they are but still if someone can enlighten the normal plonkers who fork out their money for a race and then get nothing in return it would be appreciated!

And where have all the goody bags gone............

Thanks

PPA @ R2 per rider 10 000 (what needs to be paid to CSA)

Race commisioners 30 000

Race tec 50 000 ( to lay timing mats and look at a computer screen)

Refreshments 50 000

Venue hire 50 000

Sound hire 40 000

Administration (2 months salaries for say 3 staff to orginise the event) R120 000

Charities R170 000

So that leaves about R nil

Venues are normally sponsered as they get revenue from cyclist spending money the venue and from advertizing. Refresments at the end is also normally sponsered

Someone's gona come here and comment all the money goes to charity... So for all the flak cyclist get, we should actually be praised for all our contributions to charity

look - i am no event organiser, but they dont do it for fun. in a lot of cases, it is their job - so first off they need some profit. Second off you seem to have ignored things like:

Ambulance services

Crowd control fencing

Ablutions etc etc and i am sure there a heaps more

Sure there are probably things missed. But not that substantial. But then again. How much are the sponsores paying to be associated to the race. I'm sure there's a lot of income missed as well.

Most races supposedly support a charity, but I've never seen anyone mention how much went to the charity. That may balance the books, but I doubt it.

If so much goes to charity, we as the riders should be able to get a certificate to claim back the donation from our tax. That makes the entry fee worthwhile.

Our club works together with Rotary and receive no personal finacial benefit for the race we host. We would love to have 5000 riders and although ours is one of the few races that has maintained and even increased riders numbers taking all our distances added we are nowhere near that.

Traffic officer are included into the metro bill, WHAT ROAD CLOSURES!!!!!! Still have to compete with traffic. Venues get sponsered.

Still then where and what does the sponsers contribute to the race.?????????

Administration fee? not talking about the 94.7 or cape argus here

Refershments sponsered so no expenses there.

Will conceive if forgot about the medical, fencing and ablution. That is not more than 30 000.

If you pay R 40 000 for sound hire you mustbe stupid! Can hold a consert with that amount of sound!

Just still feels that we are being explioted for doing something we love, where I know this comparison has been made alot, the running mainiacs get off paying much less and getting alot more!

The maths does not make sense even common sense is missing the picture when it comes to cycling event organization?

Just food for thought

Sponsors seldom contribute cash. Its more often T-shirts or expired tins of tuna for the race packs that you'll end up getting. A while ago one of the orginisers actually came out with the cost of doing events. Its staggering what things cost these days.

If you've ever been involved with events coordination, you'll know that the costs given by me is not far off. Besides, these are not listed companies or registered charities (events coordinators), and they have on obligation to disclose their financial position.

Your other option is to do the "Kerkbazaar" races with no proper timing, medical support, road closures or partial road closures, refreshments, or any other form of logistics.

To be honest: I'd prefer to pay even more for some races on the calendar if they'll restrict numbers and remove short routes all together. There's nothing like having to sit in bunches 300 strong, and then have to risk life and limb in the sprint past the short route backmarkers in the finish straight.

I don't ask the guy at quickfit what his profit is on a set of Bridgestones before I put them on my car. I shop around and use the supplier that provides the best product with the service at the best price.

Shop around with the races. Go do the Kerkbazaar race at R120 an entry and report back on if you thought it was worth it. Besides, what else do you get these days for R190? Take aways for the family on a friday night? 3 tubes for your bike?

Like its been said on here before "voat wif yor wallit"

I have no idea what it actually costs to organise a race but most CT races are organised by charities, with some sponsorship. . Any large undertaking like organising a road race must have lots of expenses that you don't see at first glance. Racetec won't be doing the timing for free, will they? False bay Rugby Club or whatever venue you use will also charge. Does the PPA charge the charity to use its name when organsing events? The traffic dept also charges as far as I know. Who pays for all the motorcycle marshals petrol? etc etc. And many sponsors have become much more tight fisted than a few years ago.

I seriously doubt that there is anyone make big bucks organising funrides.

There certainly isn't enough communication between the cyclists and the charities. They are effectively supporting each other and don't really understand how they impact each other.

If you family is 10 big yes. 3 tubes for you bike is a rip-off. Here in SA north we get 3 for R100.

At least Emperors Palace are recycling medals from old long forgotten events, saves them having to provide new. Refreshments were thin to say the least, and goodie bags lost in translation...

At the end of the day race organizers are there to make money hence they host these events, they not doing it for nothing. Check the guys down in Southern Gauteng to ensure they don't spend to much on the race itself they call it an open event without categories which chews into the money.
