Hi

How big a difference does inner tubes make on a roadbike.

I`m running Conti GP4000s at the moment and have always just used the basic R40 Kendas. Is it worth paying R100 on CRC for Conti Sprint/Race (50g tube)?

If there's really a difference, what would be the best weight/durability tube?

Thx

There was a writeup here the other day.

Im too lazy to do a search.

But basically you can reduce your rolling resistance by up to 10% kind of thing.

Then JB came in and burst our massive over excited bubble and he said when you look at the bigger picture and you add everything up, you are only saving 0.025 percent or something stupid.

So maybe over 100km you will be a few seconds faster.

If you have the money spare, buy them because they are also smaller in your back pocket.

But if you are tight for cash, stick to the big old heavies.

Why not just get a 70g BBB light one for R60.

Didnt you used to preach about how nice and small the expensive ones are in your pocket?

:)

Do you think R60 is cheap for me. Only when I saw how small they can roll up did I manage to see the benefit. I fit 3 of them in my tiny saddle bag with chain tool, links and tyre levers.

The biggest issue is getting them installed. The thin 50g tubes are very unforgiving when it comes to tire levers forcing the tire bead back over the rim and pinch nice holes before you have even used them. Normal tubes work fine, go take a few minutes longer in the toilet if you need to shed the extra 50g.

as for saving space...

Personally I had a heart attack when tubes jumped from R20 to R50 overnight.

So for me even R40 sounds too much for something that I need to sometimes just chuck away.

Super lite tubes are not a very good idea as one smell of a stone and a puncture happens.

if you want to save weight and rolling resistance then buy Mitchelin Latex tubes, ( for Road and MTB ) available on CRC.

yes they are expensive but are worth it. I have ridden them and will again.

Sorry, not for me mate.

Throw tube away after every puncture is not worth it.

Also I have heard that latex tubes often dont go down gracefully like a slow butel puncture does. (Latex will tear like a balloon under pressure)

BANG and you on the rim trying to stay upright.

No thanks.

And you are sticking them in your MTB?

Dude. Tubeless.

Hi yes, The article regarding rolling resistance said you getting 10% less rolling resistance with Latex tubes not lighter tubes.

But as previous mentioned if you ride reasonable pace your rolling resistance is less than 10% of your resistance so 10% will save you less than 1% resistance with most of your resistance being wind resistance.

"then buy Mitchelin Latex tubes"

We are talking about tubes here, right?

Haha.

Funny how looking at company slogans how they can mean so much more
