I got an email with this in, was wondering if there is any truth in it, goes as follows

Hi all, this is very interesting.....

ALWAYS ask for a cash slip when filling up your vehicle's tank , even if paying with cash and even if you intend on throwing the slip away, because....

· The pump attendants take these unclaimed cash slips from the cash register attendant and sell these same cash slips to taxi drivers

· The taxi drivers then add these cash slips to their own and so claim a bigger subsidy amount from government, thereby not feeling the pinch of the fuel increases.

Send this to everyone on your address list, to prevent this corruption going on and the rest of us (non-subsidized drivers) suffers in silence.

You probably didn't even know that fuel for Taxi's is subsidized, which we pay for.

Thanks again to the South African government for screwing it's tax paying citizens while thieves and liars continue being subsidized.

Live and let live. In SA we are so quick to remove the sunlight from our neighbour's yard.

If we can't do anything with the slip, but the taxi driver can get some money back, who cares? Now, if you keep the slip nobody gets anything back. It's either lose - win or lose - lose.

It's not like the tax brackets are going to be relaxed because less taxi drivers claimed fuel...

Heard the same thing regarding receipts at the toll booths - don't know whether it is true though.

Are you serious! Who do you think picks up the bill at the end of the day? Thus less money for education, healthcare, etc and more in the pocket of the taxi owner!

Cant agree with you on this one, its stealing and its corrupt. Has nothing to do with the sun shining on another oke.

Why do you assume that? I am, in fact I pretty sure that after income tax, petrol tax, vat etc I'm only left with about 45% of my actual income. (Not happy about this!!)

However, the "taxi slip syndicate" will definitively not impact the tax bracket one bit. Worry about the R100mil youth party, the R500mil police HQ, the millions of travel claims. To worry about the extra couple of rands the taxi driver can claim on a false slip is petty and not worth my time to be honest.

Also, it sounds more like one of those emails that people send around that has no substance or proof to it. It causes a great hype and then dissapears...till next year when it's the email's turn to do the rounds again.

I have witnessed petrol attendants pocketing cash after a vehicle had thrown in a set amount, and drove off without asking for a slip. Once a slip is printed the transaction is closed, and the money registers as being in the till. Garages suffer quite heavy losses due to this form of fraud.

Their are many ways in which they scam and defraud unwary people.

Some pumps are not zeroed when they start filling up your vehicle, resulting in you paying a higher amount than you are supposed to.

They swipe your card twice, and pocket the one amount. Also true at toll booths.

This is easier done with fleet cards as fleet managers don't always detect a double billing.

Taxi operators DO get subidised by the goverment. Ever notice that they never protest higher fuel prices?

If the fuel price goes up, the subsidy goes up.

They also only use certain filling stations, which are normally located close to taxi ranks.

I'm sure petrol stations do their books and can check attendants' records (they have to put their Attendant ID tag on the pump). Also, nowadays this resets the digits. This is only at newish petrol stations though.

The double card swipe is a problem especially at restaurants and pubs. They take down your CC number and CVV number at the back and do another transaction later.

Didn't the taxi industry strike when the petrol price went up to R10 a liter about 2 years ago.

I also suppose they use the filling stations close to taxi ranks cos that's where are every morning and afternoon. I would also fill up there.
