Western Flyer Mean Machine. It was yellow, full suspension, with a plastic petrol tank, mudguards and number plate. Got it for my 7th birthday in 1979 and I've been hooked on bikes ever since.

Geez, now that brings back memories. Its used to look like a motor bike, well my motor bike anyway, thats was when I was 5 or 6 years old  Gotta find a pic of one of those

The Bridgestone RB2. Bought it during my fourth (academic) year of studies from a cyclingshop in Silverton, Pta. Did a few races (Vasbyt 165km etc) on it as well. Enjoyed the bicycle immensely!

Bought a lot of my kit from Autoxtra(sp?) cycles in Church street

Those old Raleigh BMX's from the mid eighties were the bomb, cromolly frames. That was my first bike, had a hand me down for the bike I learnt on. Its still in my folks garage.

What are the chances that you would ever sell that??? Or is that asking WAYYYY too much

What happened to those handlebars/brakes you could get for your road bike that had an extra lever at the top so you could sit upright and brake? Are they not made anymore?

  , oh yes, remember those very well. Also, remember turning your bars "upwards" on your road bike, just to make you look "cooler" , so from the side, your bars looked like a "C"

Can't remember the first bike - but the one I best remember as a kid was my grifter, big fat tyres, twist grip gears - all three of them, wide handlebars, the biggest seat in cycling creation (after the chopper)- had a sad end after I broke the frame ramping down stairs. Had a chopper before that - every time it got to a certain speed it would get a speed wobble which sometimes ended up in skinned knees.

I started off with a chopper, and then when I got to Std 5, I got this for my birthday. Really thought I was one of the " main Manne "

My frame was yellow though

Its an interesting parallel here - between chicks and bikes. Break-up with the first, return to the second.

I know I can take this thread into some murky territory here...

The Raleigh BMX got stolen, but still got the bike I learnt to ride on, very very similar to the bike Bikemonstor had, just smaller & green.

My dad thought it would be a good idea to get it respayed, and it ended up a multi colour conconction - Think Joseph & his techni colout coat, I was so pissed off with him.

No Alpina or Hansom pics yet???

I remember in the eighties those made up 95% of the field. The lucky rich okes had Vitus or Alan bikes.

How many guys used to ride the road "racing bikes" with the handlebars upside down, I remember my older brother & his mates cruising around like that  They even made it into the Daily News
