The bikes that got us hooked

My first bike was a 1983 Raleigh Burner, pretty similar to this one. It had back brakes when I got it which I had changed to normal brakes at Alan van Heerden Cycles in Corlett Drive. The bike was R149.00 brand new back then. I think I was the happiest kid on the block when I got it.

That was a mean bike!!

There was a guy riding the last 94.7 like that. About 50+, shorts, T-shirt, takkies. Bastard kept up with me the whole way. Grrrr.

lol  Must have been frustrating & a laugh all in one

This was my first 'proper' MTB and also when I met Anton from Summit Cycles (Yip Ant 2002!)

And that's where it all went wrong… ;)

kats201... I am a fireman with 18 yrs service.

A good friend of mine once stated - "in the good old days you could leave the wife at home, now the bitch wants to follow you to work!"

That is not the case in cycling though.. I have never seen more fit females that in this sport! Surfing groupies are "FIT" but in another way.

Cycling woman are an inspiration. And Cycling couples to me are like stories of the couples who climbed Yosemite Peak back in the day when rope was made out of a hope and a prayer.

Then some cheapie BMX bikes when I bent the above into touch and then I got his. First bicycle I swooned over....

Eventually realised I was more into the freestyle thing than the BMX racing bit and luckly got me one of these

Eventually ended up on an Alpina road bike somehow and so also got into road bit. (Can't find any pics of that though) Have done the MTB bit and finished Epic in 2005 too. (Giant NRS 1)

Turning 40 this year and besides the Trek road bike I also have one of these in the garage that I 'play' on when I take the kids riding.

I started off with a chopper, and then when I got to Std 5, I got this for my birthday. Really thought I was one of the " main Manne "

My frame was yellow though

I also got a yellow Mongoose for my birthday! Mine had mags and pedal brakes with a Haro number board and a number 1 on the front! Loved that bike. Nearly detached my Achilles tendon with the pedals though...

Got that one for mahala. Someone I know, his son abandoned it outside and it was about to start a serious rust process. Cleaned it up, bought a new saddle, bigger bars, new grips and put it back together. Need to find a layback type seatpost for it somewhere, as it's a little compact, but still have some great fun on it.

Damn. I also had one of those but in blue and white. Sold it to take a bird on a date. IDIOT! Before that I had a Trek Sub Dude.

Waaay before that I had a Raleigh Burner followed by a Goldhill 15 speed from Game.

Cannondale M900 circa 96/97. Bought it online from a dealer in Florida USA in the early days of the web in SA.My Missus brought it in with her luggage on a flight. Only sold it late last year to add the cash towards my 29er.
