It may be Patellofemoral/knee pain and is a common cycling injury.

Prevention: Correct riding position, correct bike size and strong core. Stretching the quads and hamstring also helps. Try varying the saddle height as mentioned and try prevent excessive play on the pedals.

If you get this injury stop immediately and let the knee rest.

Listen to the body when it is telling you something

think it'll be best to start playing around with saddle height. Thats gona be the simplest & i'll take it from there. i was just sooo comfortable with my riding position for sum time until the pain started which i guess is the body saying "sumthin's wrong lad.." so yeah. Was actually planning a visit to my GP today until i posted this thread. tomorrow morning's ride will let me know if i've adjusted saddle height correctly. trial & error.. great responses so far, thanks hubbers. will update post after weekend.

Just make sure the cleats on both shoes are parallel. And check that your saddle is actually level. On my old bike I came back with a pain in my knee only to discover the bike had been unduly affected since my last ride as the seat was on about a 15^degree slant...
