  1. A few days ago "Daniel Britz The Bike Agent/Trader thebikeagent.sa@gmail.com 0649251651" enquired about my ad https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/dual-suspension-mountain-e-bikes/668316/2022-orbea-rise-h30-large-with-r60k-upgrades. After sharing personal info that he requested (listed below), he pretended to EFT, then disappeared. - clear ID copy front & rear pics - proof of bank account info - proof of address - loads of bike pics - selfie I assume that this could be a case of identity fraud. Bike ad and personal details could be fraudulently used to deceive interested buyers into handing over cash. Beware. In the meantime I've applied for Protective Registration on SAFPS's website (Southern African Fraud Prevention Service). My bank's fraud division advised that all credit providers and financial service providers vet new applications through SAFPS I believe. Please be alert. Any further advice/input appreciated. Screen shots of my interaction with Daniel below. Funny, his Whatsapp profile pic actually indicates a shady character.. *edited for conciseness*

  7. On my downhill bike the space between my 9spd chainring & bashgaurd is really limited. The chainring is worn and I'm attempting to replace it with a 10spd chainring/drivetrain. Here's a pic of my current worn 9spd chainring that I would like to replace with a fresh 34t or 36t 10spd ring of similar width if possible (similar width is required to allow the chainring to fit into the limited space and to maintain the same chain line/angle): Here's an attempt to squeeze a standard 36t 10spd ring (a rather chunky 10spd ring), into the limited space. Fail. Ring rubs up against bashgaurd. Hence the need for a thin 10spd ring (34t or 36t) or any other solution? Ring doesn't even have to have narrow-wide technology. As long as the ring is thin'ish. Perhaps 34t/36t chainrings of 2x10 or 3x10 cranksets are thinner than 34t/36t chainrings of 1x10 cranksets and is what I should be looking for? Let me know. Happy to cover postage costs.

  10. So I've dealt with this seller before, on Scumtree unfortunately, and was scammed out of some cash after dropping my guard for a second. Ok, admin, so the advertised item was not bike related and the advertising platform was not BikeHub. However I have posted the incident here as the seller is a scammer nonetheless and I am merely hoping to source some tips from the infinite knowledge base of 'le Hub'. Hopefully the incident creates more general awareness too. Hope that this is okay. If not, admin, please delete/advise. After contacting the seller via Gumtree messenger we chatted via whatsapp and I EFT'd without doing the necessary due diligence. I was rather busy at work and the brain cogs were not turning fully at the time. Men and multitasking. Go figure. As soon as the money cleared the seller stopped communicating, mobile nr was no longer active, etc. I would prefer not to get into the detail right now. Good ol' Gumtree. It happened. School fees paid/fingers burnt. Time to move on. Few weeks later I see the exact same ad on Gumtree, this time with a different mobile number. I contacted the seller from a different mobile number via whatsapp and now the seller wants to meet. Says that he is in Jeffreys Bay but I seriously doubt this because his previous ad said that he was located in Lutzville. Oh and he also wants "half of the cash upfront before meeting". Of course he does. Have the following info currently: - sellers' fake name. Robert Simonds. - sellers' two mobile nrs that are no longer active. Probably 'burner' sim cards. 061 370 8749; 067 745 7081. - sellers' bank account info. FNB acc nr 6279 8276 872. - whatsapp profile pic. Most likely a random pic from the net. - links to Gumtree ads. Ads still up/live currently. No mobile number posted. Seller responds via Gumtree messenger. - SAPS case number. Not that I am expecting anything to come of it. Case opened merely for entertainment value..
  11. Rides with wife & kids to the local park. Bunny hops everything in sight. Makes eldest kid capture dad's impromptu practice session. Adds slow-mo for effect. Kids loved the enthusiasm. lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsFxQiOnteg&feature=youtu.be
  12. Hope that this local creativity grabs global attention. Thumbs up for the thought that's gone into this. But on my mountain bike I crash way too often to forgo the padded protection of my beloved backpack. And where else would my mobile phone be safely stored. Certainly not on the bike or in the pocket of a crash prone rider. In saying this I have just reminded myself of the need to improve riding skills. Eish.

  14. Hoogekraal yesterday. Fun factor upped a few notches with an awesome blast from the past.
  15. 'Average Joe' here hoping to explore Helderberg trails tomorrow from 12h00 to 14h30 if all goes well. Happy to share the experience with a riding partner/trail guide if anyone's keen? Been yearning to return to those sublime trails for ages. PM or whatsapp 0836882228.
  16. all this fancy tech, and still the rear derailleur remains the age-old standard design, like a limp arm protruding precariously. Some companies are attempting to change this though. Hopefully soon.
  17. Many thanks for the info. Received a private message from the event organizer that included more info on the timing issue and an apology. Didn't see or hear the announcement of the decision at the race though and didn't see any publication of the decision anywhere (checked social media updates, etc). Did I miss it perhaps? And now this in the Pinkbike article: "Accurate timing is one of the core elements of any race”. The article literally doesn't mention the timing issue and goes on to say that previous timing issues (experienced at past races), was addressed. Clearly indicating that timing issues did not occur on the day. https://www.pinkbike.com/news/enduro-western-cape--ewc-1-hoogekraal.html Kindly advise/comment?
  18. No announcement or publication from the event's organizers.
  19. Confused. For about 90% of the riders, stage 2 times have been omitted from the results. Excluding stage 2 results would result in incorrect rankings no? Anyone else sharing the same view? Or have I missed something perhaps.
  20. Targeting courier vehicles. Nothing new. The SAPS pretense & removal of tracking device appears to be the sign of a well organised syndicate though. How is the incident categorized as a hijacking though. Through bystander/witness accounts, or through the account of courier driver only..?

  22. Been wanting to make my pepper spray cannister more accessible during rides. The velcro strap sold with the cannister is rather poorly constructed with loose stitching etc. so I took an old headlight battery pouch (with velcro strap) and found that the can fits snug (40ml can, 'direct stream' type). When strapped to the shoulder strap of my backpack the pouch moved around quite a bit. Prefer the shoulder strap location because it really feels like the most accessible place that I can think of. Pockets or hip mount scares me coz of the potential impact during a fall. And on the mountain I have my fare share of falls/fails . To secure the pouch to the shoulder strap of my backpack I added an old velcro strap that's usually used to secure a hand pump to a frame. Success. Pouch wasn't in the way during my test ride on my local trails this morning and didn't move around at all. In fact, after a while, I completely forgot that it was there. Let's hope that I remember where to find it in the event of an emergency, and that I never land on it during a fall. More importantly. Here's hoping that I'll never have to use it. Fingers and toes crossed .
