Comparisons: Total Ascent for 99er, Medallion and Argus

Other than uncontrollable variables like wind and temperature, one's finishing time in the 99er and Medallion can be correlated to the Argus.

It has similar distance.

AND what is the comparative total ascents for the 99er, Medallion 2009 (Helshoogte Pass incl) and the grand Argus?

This is for those dudes who collect such data and love to play with their gadgets.

Dunno AB, did 99'er in 3:23 and Medallion in 3:05 last year. Ended up with my slowest Argus yet, with a time of 3:43.

Oops, just remembered why I had a dismal Argus. My Brother passed away two weeks before the race, and I had a "medical condition" on race day. :P

Can you remember the trouble I had on the day the two of us did the recce ride. :D

Medallion is only 100 km's with a small speedbump at the beginning so it can't really be compared to the Argus. Think the 99'er should be similar timewise all things being equal (with the wind...)

AB, will have a look at total asc... but there's huge difference for me to the races. I did a 3:15 Medallion two years ago, this years 99er was 3:35 - and I am very happy with that effort! Big difference being where in the race you hit the climbs. Medallion is pretty much effort up Hels and recovery down into Pniel and then low-flying after that. Two small hills riiight at the end, but not counting for that much. Burger with it's rollers coming back is more taxing for me. And come to think of it, my Burger time was not that much faster than my 99er time - about 10 mins. (That said, I feel I rode a much better race with 99er than Burger.)

Think 99er will be much closer ito where you hit the climbs. You do find Chappies and Suikerbossie earlier in the ride, but combined they're worse than Vissershok and Odendaals, which conversely on 99er you catch at a worse time. So if me as a relative newcomer and not nearly on your guys' level will guess, I'd say 99er is closest in resembling Argus.

Medallion is not a good one to compare.

I've also been playing on my new computer and I got the 99er at 1100m of climbing in 108km, the Three passes on Sunday at 970m in 76.4km, and the Cape Cobra was something like 1800m of climbing in 88km, if I remember correctly.

Not sure what the Argus is though. But after the Vissershok/Odendaal Rd slow down on Saturday, I'm worried that my 3:20 is out of sight :(

Thanx, Big JD...

There's been some confusion about the actual distance of the Medallion.

1095m of ascent for the 99er from Garmin.

I need to check for the Argus(think I may have not saved it) and no data for TdeStellies as i haven't done it before. But IMHO the 99er is tougher than the Argus.

Geesh got 1065m for the 99ner on Saturday and last years Argus was 1260m according to my Polar.

So difference of about 200m.

So, based on a comment from another thread, the PPA rates the 99er about 7% easier than the Argus...

Puts an interesting perspective on my comparative analysis thus far.
