There’s another race behind the bike race, of team mechanics and soigneurs jumping from one sector to the next, cutting the course to leapfrog the pack, over and over. Our staff passed me and told me I’d better hop in the car, because I’d been directed off-course. I was bummed, but it’s not like I was in the race any more, and if they hadn’t seen me, I’d probably still be out there.

“Woodsy,” said my coach Ron Warhurst looking at me straight in the eyes, “Excuses are like assholes, everybody’s got one.” Ron was my running coach at the University of Michigan. Ron may not have been the most scientific coach, but what he lacked in fundamental knowledge concerning exercise physiology he certainly made up for in life lessons. I mean anybody who walked point in the Vietnam war for months on end and survived, anybody who has been shot and earned two purple hearts, anybody who has struggled with and overcame alcoholism, and led and tutored men at an institution for 35 years is going to have an interesting perspective on life. Ron did all of these things, and so his little sayings to this day have had a profound impact on me as a person.

Segment of Howes's blog.

Love it.

Pais Vasco is an absolutely horrible, treacherous, over the top, insane excuse of a race. Yet, somehow it is this amazing, beautiful, pure, life experience that will forever grant its participants the right to say, “Yeah, but I did Pais Vasco.” And for those who know things about these sorts of things, they will know, that really means something. Only the best win there, and for the rest of us, we spend six days finding God and hoping that what does not kill us will actually make us stronger.

More welcomed success for the Green Team

Tom Skujins (Cannondale) claimed stage 5 of the Tour of California to South Lake Tahoe in a three-man sprint against Adam de Vos (Rally Cycling) and Xabier Zandio (Team Sky).

The two leaders have 4'30 over the Nibali group, with Amador another 30 seconds down. The stage win is in the balance at the moment.
