Hi there.

On Saturday morning I went for a training ride on the wet roads here in the east and about 20km from home I punctured while stopping at a red robot, didn't have a flat before I stopped as soon as I pulled away I noticed my back wheel is flat, in any case change the tube and head home. Now just as I am about 1 km from home a heard a loud pop like a cracker shooting  , so I noticed my back wheel is flat again, any case got off my bike and push home when at home I inspected the tire and noticed the sidewall had a big tear in which happened after the pop, wasn't there before, when I fixed the 1st puncture I inspected the tire and it wasn't there. Now what could have been the cause of this, 2nd time on the tire as I have only used that tire a week before for the 1st time so it's a brand new tire. And this is the second time it has happened to me but both times was with maxxis Detonator tires, is there an issue with these tires or am I doing something wrong that might cause this ?

Thanks guys , looking forward to your responses.

Could be lotsa things, it rained in the east over the weekend and all sorts of crap gets washed onto the roads. Stone piece of glass, punctures are very common after rain storms.

Detonator tires

That's the problem they detonated.

 , that's what I thought on Saturday morning and actually seeing the humor in the situation , and my lbs actually told me these are the best tyres etc etc guess that's why they have them on special...

Might have been a piece of glass that cut the sidewall and caused the puncture the first time - cut small enough not to be noticed. Second time was the tube pushing through the sidewall and popping.

I had the same happen during a race on Saturday. Got a flat 2km into the race. Checked for sharp objects, put new tube in and off I went. During the race I noticed something sticking out the side of my tire and thought it was a thorn that stuck in while riding. Left it as not to puncture. Finished the race, got back to the venue and discovered that it was my tube pushing through the tire at that spot. Needless to say about 5 min later the tube popped. Just glad the tire held to the finish.

I am trying to patch my Gatorskin at the moment with some 1.5mm rubber which looks like conveyor belt stuff.

How is the rolling resistance on these ?

Unless you are a pro it is probably not important, fact of the matter is you are going to get about 10,000 k's out of a tire with little or no punctures unless you are really unlucky.

And if you don't ride for a few months they will perish on the sidewall, diagnosed by a cracking sound when you pump them....thankfully I saw it before they ripped completely... :o

On the blowout - are your brake blocks maybe brushing the tyre? Or is it an oldish tyre - maybe the lbs had it for a while? Or it got some contaminant on it that rotted the rubber?

I've never seen the sense of buying expensive "racing" tyres that pop and puncture when you need them most. The time repairing the puncture loses anything you gained by riding with lower rolling resistance. I use Serfas (R150 per tyre) and pump them to 130psi (I'm a light rider).
