Assuming this is the Fork, what make and model, how old is it, when did you last service it, did you ride it into a rock/tree/pedestrian, did the small scratch appear on it's own?

Help us out here. Details please.

(To soften the blow, it is unlikely to be deadly in terms of KILLING you, but could be financially terminal if not acted on)

Pics will help are essential...

I have quite a bad scratch on my Fox, after the bike fell over, and connected with a rock...

At the time, I popped up a similar question...

But there's no real answer to this, until you can show what you're talking about...

In my case, I sanded the spot down very, very carefully, so as not to remove any more coating - but to take off the edges.

I check regularly for any leakage - but been more than a year now, and does not appear to be causing any issues.

With this being said - how you go about 'treating' it, will make all the difference - so don't do anything without getting some free advice from your fellow Hubbers!

Oh - and pop up the answers to Drongo's questions as well - the more info you put up, the more complete the help will be.

How could I forget pics? any way here they are...

As for how it happened... My friend and i had a DH session and i forgot to put on the rack since i put my bike in the back of the car. I forgot my friend was coming home with me so we were forced to put both bikes in the back of the car. It must have happened some time then.

the important thing about a scratch is that it should not damage the stanchion seals. if the scratch is not deep, then the edges wont be raised by too much, or will have rounded edges that wont affect the seals. Deeper scratches need their edges smoothed down. Oil in the fork might require a slightly increased changing frequency as the dust collects in the scratch bypassing the dust seal. But as scratches go, this is dust collection issue is largely irrelevant, if not completely unlikely in terms of a real impact on fork performance. It's more important that the seals are not damaged.
