  1. Thought I'd share a rather clever variation for a bakkie bike rack, and now having used it, it is incredibly convenient. My father in law is a bit of a swiss army knife, and tends to engineer solutions when he has a problem. He needed access to his load bin a lot & didn't enjoy the bike racks on the front runner, so built this for his bicyles for work / family trips. The vertical pole is removable, and securing the wheels is currently completed via tube-strapped industrial cable ties. First pic is v1 and second is v2.
  2. Dr Levetan @ Chris Barnard. I've seen him every 18 months for 10 years & he's been nothing short of brilliant.
  3. BikeHub 'year in review' should have a 'comment of the year section', and this should be it.
  4. This is the link that was shared with me a couple of years ago: https://www.strava.com/activities/1219513235. Received from: https://community.bikehub.co.za/user/50271-dirtypot/
  5. Yes the H&A trails are something special, and there are some fantastic options in the initial forest bit and then multiple routes (red, black, etc.) going forward. For a quick burn around town, climb to the mini reservoir / water works silo off mountain drive; it has an exit just to the right of the silo, and you can ride this down to the astro, and then go through (via the road parallel to the golf course) fernkloof all the way to the other side of hermanus. The signage towards the end is pretty poor though, and I've ended up on walking trails and been shouted at by very aggravated residents! There are also trails in Stanford, but the road works / stop and go delays are painful on that road. One last option is the route from Peregriene farm stall all the way to hermanus, but requires some time and a sense of humour.
  6. The amount of online fraud that is happening right now is frightening, and don't think it can't happen to you. Many an intelligent man / woman has fallen victim to somewhat sly dealings of our fraudster friends. That being said, there are a couple of simple principles that are key to ensuring you don't scammed. See below, and feel free to add: You never release goods on receipt of a POP, SMS, etc. You don't release goods even if you see the amount pending in your account, as fraudsters use cheques, which makes it look like it is in your account, and then cancel it once they have your goodsThe only way to get around this is to always phone your bank to confirm that the cash has cleared into your account (cleared!); ask them clearly if it is cleared and if it is a cheque paymentThe same goes for the trick that 'I paid you twice, please refund me'; wait until the money has cleared until you act and give them their money backOn the Hub, look at the profile of the person you are dealing with, i.e. have they joined within a ~week, no posts, vague name, or if they have been around for a while, look at their ratings; the sign are usually thereProbably much more to add here, but the first two points should go a long way. Long story short, for all the good and honest traders out there, there are as many fraudsters. Be meticulous.
  7. Sent you a PM with the file.
  8. The trails in town are fun for an evening bash. About 400/500m down mountain drive road, you enter up a jeep track, and then a small climb to a mini-reservoir. Just to the right of it, you enter in and there is a nice 1.2km XCO track (it was a bit overgrown when I was last there). If you carry on and make your way to Fernkloof, there is another trail there - not all time trails, but fun.
  9. Quick one: When I have the dropper down and am out of the saddle heading down trails, I am getting ridiculous pain in my feet, in the area of the cleats, obviously due to the pressure. Riding a hardtail and pedals/cleats are SPDs. Any insight into if this is better with other cleats/pedals or a better quality pair of shoes (mine are average)?
  10. What's happening with the UCT track? I heard that you no longer need a permit - any truth in this?
  11. I commuted for 1.5 years over short distance (2-3km) and actually ended up getting rid of one of our cars. Miss it in a big way, especially these cold winter mornings. Was based in a building in the V&A, and on one morning the bike rack was full of commuters and also electric bikes used for one organisation's staff members, so I locked up around the corner. That day, a gent accessed the 'secure' parking by taking a V&A parking ticket in a VW Caddy LWB and proceeded to snip locks and load up every last one of those bikes. Very grateful to still have that commuter, but learned that a U-lock or office storage is the only way to go.
  12. Quite new to cycling, but I thought I'd bring up a concerning topic. I have a guy who works for me on the weekends at our home in Greenpoint. He lives on the street, so he has his fair share of exposure to crime, and when he saw that I had purchased a new road bike, he casually made mention of how often he gets the request to steal bicycles. When I enquired a bit more, he was able to name some of the top bicycle names, i.e. Specialized, Santa Cruz, etc. - because the requests are quite specific, and it turns out they are coming from fairly wealthy people. Lock those bicycles up properly.
