  1. Good evening Hubbers

I was curious to find out what local bicycle brands currently exist in South Africa. Any help expanding on the list would be amazing ????. The proudly South African bicycle manufacturers I am aware of (at least at the time of posting this) are the following:

    • Momsen
    • Pyga
    • Signal
    • Avalanche
    • Rook
    • Simple Sam

Looking forward to broadening my horizons and adding some local ‘gems’ to the list????

  2. Hi GaryW

The track (or at least sections thereof such as the GREEN) is perfect for newbies . Come buy this Saturday (17/2/2018) for the open day at the track - it would be the perfect time to take a look at the track and meet some other riders with newbie riders the same age as your kid...

  3. Hi Guys

The Riverfields MTB Trail will be holding a open track day Saturday the 17th... You are invited to come and experience the newly completed 17km Red course... or simply enjoy the existing 10km Blue and 3km Green Trail...

Race Snakes!!!  Come claim the Strava KOM, currently held at 43:28, between 06:00 and 08:00 on the morning... and then calm yourselves down to give the kids, wifes, newbies and more relaxed riders a go between 08:00 and 14:00...

There will be prizes up for grabs, pancakes and boerie rolls for sale as well as some demo bikes available...

Entry, as always, remains FREE... but donations towards the security and upkeep of the track will be the primary purpose of the event...

For further information please contact Conraadt (PAINcave) on (ZERO)8249(ZERO)4875...

    See you there!!!

  4. Hi Drikus.

PM me your number and I will add you to the Riverfields WhatsApp group, sure you would find a riding buddy there - being situated in Glen Marias and all. I'm in GM myself, but am sitting in my PTA office by 6am already...

Also maybe check out the Riverfields MTB thread under forums, not sure if you are a road- or MTB cyclist.

  5. Hi Guys

After my (un)spectacular crash on the track in December last year, I only revisited RIverfields this past weekend.. oh how the legs burned...   .

I was pleasantly surprised by the Christmas presents left on the track by Riverfields/Finishline .. They managed to 'scrape' about 90% of the existing blue and red sections, and added a lovely new section to the track... The new section (marked in black on the image) is just under 6km (bringing the total distance of the track up to 17km on a single loop) - complete with some pups, rocks, drops and other obstacles to fall off of  ... Riding my cross, I was forced to get off and carry my bike over 2 short sections, but managed it through and over the rest... that said, don't attempt the new section at speed if you are a beginner or not familiar with the track

See you on the track, and enjoy the new addition(s)... :w00t:

  6. Perhaps, instead of requiring a 'team' member to bring in funds for a national centralized point, allow us to align ourselves with a branch of our choice and let us provide donations of food, items for their charity shops, equipment for their premises or other hard items, in addition to cash if that comes to hand. This will then provide members with a closer, more personalised identification with the nominated NSPCA branch and could then also spin off into localised media coverage (if the branch is on the ball). Ideally, this could evolve into a team per branch situation with resultant inter-team competition. Perhaps, one day when all is good in the world and both Zuma and Trump are gone, we could have an annual NSPCA race day for all teams. Sure, this sounds all warm and fuzzy but there may be some value in this. Any views from fellow hubbers?

Awesome idea!!!!!!! We will definitely run it by the NSPCA-guys  :w00t:

  7. Chris. Any more info on the development of this initiative? Have you started to take applicants. Are all SPCSA branches aware of the drive? Any group rides/discussions planned?

    Hi FF

We are still busy sorting out some of the logistics... and possibly making it more accessible (as per some of the awesome suggestions from this group)... If you are keen on joining, please let Meg (comms@nspca.co.za) know.

    Regards

    C

  8. I spoke the lady in charge (forget her name and number I am afraid) and she said they have

    plenty available.

I wanted long sleeve but they did not have and the manufacturer's did not want to fabricate a couple.  Agreed, they are awesome.

Jip, the lady's name is Meg  :w00t: ... you can contact her on comms@nspca.co.za for jerseys (and other Q&As regarding the team)

      :whistling:

  9. Great idea!!!

I'll start one and invite the riders I know (please just remove yourself if you are perhaps invited and don't want to be part of the group). If you are keen to be part of the group, please DM me and I'll add you as well (don't want numbers flouting around on forum posts  ).

Just one rule (for now)... Since allot of these Whatsapp groups are misused, the group must please only be used to communicate relevant information about the track, events and rides... so please no inappropriate or irrelevant posts... I am sure everyone would agree herein, so don't be offended if you are removed (should you join that is) due to OT posts  :offtopic:...

Have a great day and see you all on the track soon!

    Hi Guys  :w00t:

The Whatsapp group is up - to easily join, you can just scan the below QR Code with your phone (using Whatsapp or a QR Scanner)... This will cause you to automatically be added to the 'Riverfields MTB Track' group on Whatsapp...

You can still send your number via DM if you want to be added oldschool

    See you out there

  10. Perhaps a Riverfields Whatsapp group is a good idea? Whoever plans to be at the track, leave a note of the time so others can join...

    Great idea!!!

  11. I'm Grateful and Humbled to be Alive.

Apart from that, this incident cost me +- 20K ZAR (Expensive Ride LOL)

I'm Glad that action has been taken to protect future riders.

I'll forever be grateful to Mr Lodewyk Murrey Owner of Target Specialized Risk Services and a few other people for assisting me on the day.

I feel that action should have been taken after the first incident but unfortunately it was not.

I still appeal to all of you not to ride alone @ RiverFields.

    The modus operandi is such.

2 crooks made a run for my handlebars to force me to have an accident, one from each side. I did not see them at all so even if I had a gun or pepper spray or whatever it would have been useless. Once you are on the ground they pounce on you and drag you away from the track. Stab at you, punch you in the face, tie you up etc etc. After you are tied up they take all your stuff bike, phone, shoes, helmet car keys eyeglasses money and whatever else you have on you.

The Body Heals but the Scars Remain.

I am really glad you are OK!!! Gashed and bruised, but alive!

  12. Thank you Escapee..

OK Guys, there you have it...

Let us rally to support this in any way we can... I am sure if everyone who uses the track takes some effort, we (as the riding community) would be able to at least help cover the costs... :w00t:

@Escapee.., would you please share the relevant contact details for people to get in touch with with the Curtis' (if you have it), or point us in the right direction...

  13. Please let me know next time you plan to ride the track or just looking for company!

Really is a great way for me to expend 2:30 riding there and doing a few laps and back - PM me.

I would love to chase a semi-roadie around that track! I'll be fair and bring a heavy steel bike

    Hi Grey

    PM sent with my details!

A group of us generally ride every Saturday mornings from 8am (2 laps) and some Wednesdays around 4-5PM (1 lap)... if the weather (and bosses) permit

    See you soon!

  14. Hi Guys

I was on the track last weekend again... and also notices some overgrown parts here and there, as well as the ploughed-over section at the start - but riding my cyclocross with thin tires and zero suspension still was not too difficult... :w00t:

I know that Finishline every so often takes some time to maintain (parts of) the track on their own cost...  Since the track is a "free-to-ride", I never expect it to be on par with some of the other "paid-for" tracks around... That being said, when we rode on Saturday morning there was allot of other riders around.

:excl: :excl: On the safety and security front: We noticed that Riverfields (the owner of the land) appointed a security guard who patrols the track on a quad-bike. I have to give kudos to them, who apparently does this out of their own pockets   (let me know if I have this wrong, please)... Still, please ALWAYS be vigilant when riding on the track and avoid riding alone or at odd hours of the day (or night)... :cursing:  :excl:

See you on the track!!!

  15. Hi Guys

    Thanks for your comments

I will try and answer some of the above the best I can (* disclaimer ), but will definitely chat with the guys at NSPCA on this as well... If you can, please come through to the 947 Expo to chat to the guys at their stand (I'll probably be there on Friday between 10:00 and 12:00)...

As most people who have supported the NSPCA on rides before know, the fundraising targets for a rider is more like a 'wish-list' than an outright requirement. So, if you only raise R2k (or less) per year, you will not be 'kicked off' the team  ... The idea behind the R10k p/a target is to 'aim for the heavens', and not to limit participation  ... Also (to be clear) the idea is not for cyclists to pay money out of their own pockets, but rather for them to try and raise funds (any amount) through their affiliation with the team... so riding for the team will (only*) take additional time and effort from cyclists...  :w00t: It will not cost anything to join other than some dedication!!!

Also, forming a 'National Team' in addition the the existing #teamNSPCA charity bond, is to get (dare I say "dedicated-") riders more involved throughout the year... BUT anyone can join the the team... Al that is asked is that a commitment is made to at least try and meet the "requirements"...

I cannot comment on any "benefits" to joining the team (other than the 'feel-good factor' and being part of the cycling community  ), but I am sure that NSPCA (ans maybe some sponsors) will look into saying "THANKS" in some way or another...

Lastly, donors are welcome to donate in any manner they want, either directly to the NSPCA or through the team... The fact that sponsorship are indicated to be made/paid directly to the NSPCA, is to state that the team will not use such funds, but that all of it goes to the NSPCA directly... That said, some sponsors may be keen on sponsoring the riders with specific goodies, which will be welcomed and dealt with as it comes... (we are trying to get some sponsorship for shirts, branding, etc... so here is hoping :w00t:)

I hope the above gave some clarity on the initiative... And since this is still in its infancy, some tweaking and changes will probably still be made - so please continue to chat with us hereon...
