  1. What you just did there is reductio ad absurdum. You argued and proved I was wrong by simply contradicting me.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Therefore I say you are wrong and so my argument must be correct until such time as you further contradict me. That?s reductio ad absurdum, also known as school ground taunting
  2. Surely the onus of proof is on those making the claim of a higher power, because it is impossible to prove a negative and I really shouldn't have to. There's no such thing as disproof. I can't prove there isn't a chocolate teapot orbiting Pluto, I can't prove that there isn't an intangible invisible unicorn under my bed, I can't prove that lions don't fly when we're not watching. None of these lacks of proof support the existence or occurrence of these things. Equating faith and religious belief with atheism is also wrong. One is the absence of the other, not a balancing opposite. You don't call me an a-unicornist or an a-satanist for my lack of belief in those. So from this whole thread we can conclude that there are two points of view. One is backed by reasoned argument and the other is asking someone to bet their sanity and continued support to an unknowable, unquantifiable dogma. The pay off of the first is understanding and continued intellectual growth, the pay off of the second is the promise of a life after this one. Unfortunately the pay-off for both is a bunch of people telling you what not to think and believe.
  3. I have visions of my mate Fatty running to admin..... "There's trouble at t'mill." "Oh no what trouble?" "I don't know I was just told to say there's trouble at t'mill'
  4. The only people who will berate me are those who disagree, and anyone who does that won't be arguing from a position of reason so I am not really too concerned. As for the point of it all (I assume you are talking about life), well there is no point Windbreaker, and that's the point. I get annoyed when other peoples religious sensitivities are pushed down my throat and censorship is the end result. That's the first step down a very rocky road. I am happy to leave others on the forum alone when they push a religious agenda but I take umbrage when they don't show the same tolerance to 'non believers'.
  5. Faith is the denial of reason Paradox defined. The existence of God depends upon faith, that faith depends upon the lack of proof, the lack of proof is what creates the need for faith and on and on the cycle of idiocy goes like Robert Mugabe standing between two mirrors. Proof? Atheists believe in the world, in what you can see. You want proof of the world, I'll show you it. Now show me God. Show me a flying man, a talking donkey, a navel-less man, a flying chariot, a talking, burning bush, a speaking snake. Explain how enough water to cover the top of Everest can appear from nowhere and then disappear. Explain a virgin birth, Explain walking on water. Raise me a dead man. Show me someone who can heal leprosy by touch. Show me how you can stop the sun in the sky, Any of those will do. Proof of god would be so easy if it were real, but it's not which is why the religious venerate faith. Faith is the denial of reason; it's "don't bother me with facts, I know what's right"; it's ignorance in the truest sense of the word, "to ignore". And that is exactly why faith will never go away. There are always things that cannot be explained, and mankind is a storytelling monkey that will always come up with a story which invites others to believe in it. Now moderate the crap out of that.
  6. That's because they are busy at school studying their spelling and grammer. That's spelt grammar. Just saying.

  8. This from the Warthogs list. Hi Hogs Some feedback regarding the new bout of tree felling and subsequent damage to single tracks in Tokai. Firstly, we had a breakdown in the communication channels established between TMNP and the MTB Action group. So the current logging was a nasty surprise for us too. TMNP has accepted responsibility for the breakdown and committed to rectifying it and preventing a re-occurrence. That said, we have suffered serious damage to the upper and middle sections of Meurant's. The damage is such, the affected sections will have to be completely rebuilt. TMNP will provide the funding to do so, and we will chip in with volunteer action too. We will try our best to have this section open for riding by the end of March to mid April. In the meantime we will open up the old downhill track as a temporary detour. The last section of the downhill track and linking single track are also damaged, but can be repaired. We will have contact with the logging contractors this coming week and should then be able to put a clearing team together to make the track ride-able again. Further logging operations will affect two more single tracks, but more on this closer to the time. This will only happen later in the year. Basically we have an agreement with TMNP to repair or rebuild any single track damaged by logging activities. There will be advance notice given and warning signs errected in the affected areas. Please bear with us, the logging will continue to roughly 2025 and we have charted a way to co-exist with the loggers. It will require understanding and patience from all affected. The track rebuilding is an opportunity to make improvements, and if you want to be involved, please join us on the volunteer days coming up. We will start negotiations with TMNP for access to the Southern parts of Tokai this week. This should double the jeep track riding available for MTB at present, with possibly new single track additions too. The process is a slow one, so please bear with us. Some good news, Level 4 is now open for riding. This means the jeep track section past Boulders can now be linked with the track to Silvermine on Level 5, making a nice big loop possible. The downhill direction is fast and twisty, so keep your wits about, while the reverse direction is a good hard climb. Enjoy it! In the meantime, please be careful and on the lookout for logging vehicles and personnel in the forest. They do not always display the appropriate warning signs clearly and timeously, so keep your eyes open. Feel free to forward this mail to any riders not on the list, the more informed we are, the better. See you on the tracks. Cobus
  9. Anyone know where I can get a BBB torque wrench in Cape Town area?
  10. The road can stop at the white line or the right hand gutter. What's the difference? Safety stops at the white line, that's the difference. The rules say you may not go over the white line for a reason. You have to work with what you have, and what you have is a road that is a little narrower than you would prefer, deal with it like an adult not as a petulant child would. When your money runs out at the end of the Month you don't go out and break the rules by robbing someone to get some more. Ditto with the white line, don't break the rules because you have run out of allowable road to use. Bottom line is, if you don't like the rules don't play the game. And don't ruin my chances of having a game to play in the future by getting yourself killed.
  11. Strange. I always thought that rugby fields had white lines and the game was only allowed to be played within them. Analogies, like fights, should be chosen carefully.
  12. As I said in my post, I am sure he is a great guy, and I have no doubt that as you say he is a strong character. My point, is that he is the COO (thanks for the correction) of a major sporting body that deals with millions of rands of yours and my money. We as share holders in CSA rely on him to grow the business/sport to all of our benefits. He should dress and act the part. Quirks and eccentricities do not sit well with people who write multi million rand cheques.
  13. Isn't it strange how different people have different perceptions of what they have seen. Here's my take on Mr Lemmers appearance. He ducked and dived around the question of what the license fees are going to be used for, and what the man in the street will see for his money.. Effectively he said that the fees will be used to pay for the administration of the fees. He was wearing a T-Shirt with the slogan 'Blacks like me'. Perhaps this is appropriate for a school child at a party, but not for the CEO of CSA. It's ironic that later in the program they were bemoaning the fact that the Tour of SA was cancelled because of lack of sponsorship. Would you entrust a million bucks to a man who can't make the effort to dress properly on National TV? Perceptions are so important, and I have no doubt that CL is a splendid fellow, but IMHO he needs to clean up his act if he is to attract corporate bucks. This just wasn't good enough.
  14. I am a long standing "Im not falling for the power meter" thing and Bruce and BM know it and I mean no harm atall in it and am not moking it in anyway but WH regardless of a PM or not if you dont train right you gonna get dropped anyway and I dont see why you need R8000 + to tell you you not doing it right' date=' your race performance should tell you that. Regardless I agree, for those who are iffy about getting a PM this is a good deal, so maybe I need to PM Ronelle....[/quote'] Colonel I think it would be fascinating if you used the wheel for two weeks and then reported back on how you feel when you have some experience of it. I'd love to know if it would change your opinion or not and if you did in fact get some benefit.
  15. Johan can I hijack your thread quickly, but I have to know, is Reuben the Screwman on TV your brother? Everytime I see his program I expect to see a Raleigh on the workshop wall. He's got your mannerisms, haircut, accent and strange beardy thing going. Either that or he spends a lot of his time taking the piss out of you.
  16. It's the only place any of my bikes go for service/repairs. Great service and great people who actually care. The one time they forgot to phone me to tell me my bike was ready after a repair and I got the labour for free as a result.
  17. My wife will be very keen on joining the daily housewives riding group. Please keep me up to date. (And don't tell her I called her a housewife or I am a dead man)
  18. Lefties came a close second on last years Cape Epic, but I suppose that's not a big enough test for you Rookie_ryda. Perhaps this is your idea of putting a bike through it's paces. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/10/26/bike_incident/
  19. I've had a Garmin Edge 305 for 2 years now (1st one sold in RSA) It has never missed a beat and does everything a Polar can do and more. I've never felt the need to have anything else on my bike, and I carry it in my hand when I run. It's only limitation is 11 hour battery life, but I have a portable charger that gets around that problem. Having said that I wear a Polar watch to the gym.
  20. Thanks joevan.
