Our offices moved recently to Sandton. While my commute is now shorter, it is much more dangerous. I have found a relatively safe route into town, but going home has been hair-raising on all the different routes I've tried. Once I'm on William Nicol (anywhere between Sandton drive and Republic) I'm safe. Any suggestions on how to get from corner of Grayston/Rivonia to William Nicol? Ideally it would be on taxi- and bus-free roads with pavements, sidewalks or singletrack. I prefer crossings at traffic lights and 4-way stops rather than traffic circles or turning right out of a lane where there isn't a stop. Any ideas?

From Rivonia downwards, rather take North going down, and join Grayston again at Linden. Beanz - do you know the area well? Our offices recently moved to Sandton and although my ride into town is quite safe, getting out is a nightmare. Any roads you could suggest for getting from Grayston/Rivonia crossing to William Nicol?

The green shirt in the picture below is me, I took the other one. Last week This is an amazing place with overloads of singletrack. Tourism was down because of the Taksim riots, so it was quiet(ish) and accommodation was cheap and freely available. Will have to go back there someday.

Probably navigation - especially guys tacckling difficult sections in the dark. It's tricky enough in broad daylight.

Alex in fifth now. If i read the stats correctly, the previous record time till butte was 4 days 9 hours:51. Alex was in at 4:02:48 - meaning that the first 5 people on this race all broke the previous record.

Alex moved up to 6th; fifth is just ahead of him (about 5 miles). Leader around 100+ miles ahead. It looks like it's cold-ish out there ... 51 degrees in their language is about 11 degrees Celsius (where they just passed)

nothing wrong with gangsters paradise. like cape town, there's areas where it's safe, and areas where it's better to stay away.

I sometimes commute - from randburg to parktown, partly though the spruit and party roads. commute's the only way that I can get some time on the bike together with the part-time studies and work. Been commuting (alone) for around 15 years, various routes in pretoria (groenkloof/fairy glen) and johannesburg (fourways / sandton / rosebank / randburg / parktown) - Haven't had issues and never felt unsafe.

Keep the bottle of wine ... next year I wont have classes the saturday morning, so would be able to enjoy more than just the wacky wine - can't wait

Any early evening non-racing rides in Majik Forest area this week? Here at the business school this week for classes. Have a mountainbike with me, but it's getting dark too early to go explore on my own.
