  1. Well done! Sounds like the swim was crazy. Did you do the swim with a wetsuit? As for distances, if you have a sports watch, you will be able to tell where you are, or how far you have gone. If you are serious about tris, this should probably be your first investment. Makes my life a lot easier.
  2. Congrats lady! Would love to read a race report.
  3. Challenge Roth is a bucket list item. It all sounds pretty awesome though. Your wife is awesome ICM. We are lucky to have supportive spouses.
  4. So jelly! Do it, ICM. I will live vicariously through you.
  5. Hahahaha! We all knew it ICM. The brain forgets pain very quickly.
  6. Awesome race report, ICM! You did so well on the bike. From the sounds of it, I would have been very, very slow on that course. Nice top speed there too. How is the new tri club? Interested to hear if the locals are embracing you, or are a little reserved?
  7. Good luck ICM. Sounds like a lovely race. Your training looks pretty good. You have an awesome base, so think you are going to do great. Look forward to the race report.
  8. Hacc, I would never say you are unfit. Have a friend on Strava that did it too, and he has been training non-stop for months (even after IMSA), and he said it was super rough. Just think it's a rough run. You did a Comrades! In my mind, you are fitter than 99% of people. So, I have been recovering from Pharyngitis, and took time off due to family responsibilities, and my first track session was a nightmare. My Strava score said that the track session was "Extreme" with a suffer score of 156, 109 points in the red. I was barely moving faster than a suffle, and I took long breaks between. It's taking a while to bounce back and shake off the cobwebs
  9. Happy birthday Lex! Hope you have many, many more happy and injury free miles.
  10. Also have noted this trend. I would like to do Comrades for my 40th birthday, but I am seriously reconsidering this. Not being able to train consistently will get me.
  11. That is some crazy dedication. I can barely get through a 1.5km set. I get so bored.
  12. There is no real rule of thumb. The best suggestion I can give you is to get in open water and practice. I can't think of anywhere that will be ok to swim now with a wetsuit though. Otherwise just stick to the pool. If you have anxiety in the water, you will need to practice in open water though, or at least in a pool in a crowded lane. A sprint swim is very short, so even if you battle through it, you should be fine. You can alternate between backstroke and crawl to make it easier. Before my first Sprint, I only did one open water swim. I managed just fine. Was out of breath at the start, but managed to get through the rest with no issues. Improving swimming needs dedication though. I am in the pool 4 times a week. Gains are very quick at the start, and you will be swimming 1km sets in no time. You just need to learn to pace yourself.
  13. Ah, yes. I have never thought about it from this perspective. I think out of all my runs in a given week, I have two runs that I can do socially: track and aerobic runs. For someone new to running, the pacing, HR zones and distance increases based on distance covered are very useful. I find that a lot of other programs are lacking in this area. So I guess it all comes down to what exactly the person's goals are and their experience in the sport.
  14. I use MPG for my triathlon training. I have a coach, and my program is generated weekly based on my performance stats. My program is more personalized based on my own distance and speed. My coach monitors my training sessions, provides feedback, and answers any questions I may have. MPG provides a free 30 day trial period. If your wife is looking for something more personalized and interactive, I would consider this.
  15. Perfect excuse to put up the feet with another glass of wine and read the manual!
  16. I have the Fenix 3 HR Sapphire. It's a little heavy, but I got used to it pretty quickly. I am however not happy with the HR monitor. It sometimes feels way off, such as showing I am in Z4 when I can still breath easily. The HR monitor also sporadically does not work. Happens around 5% of the time.
  17. Impressive. I swim around 5km to 7km a week, so that is a proper workout. After long swims (which is 2.4km max for me), I hop into the sauna.
  18. I have heard the water can be a bit cold even though air temp is warm, so a suit is advisable. You can also rent a suit in JHB if you prefer not dealing with shipping: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/167526-wetsuit-rental-jhb/ My first Oly distance too. See you out there.
  19. I doubt I will do anything more than a 4km set in the pool. Had to read up on OTILLO. Just a brief overview for everyone:
  20. Much envy. It's mind boggling really. Always amazes me what the human body can do with persistence.
  21. That's a pace of 1:58/100m. Impressive without a wetsuit.
  22. Did a track session on Friday and a swim and indoor cycle on Saturday. Had a 10km run planned for Sunday. Calves were cramping for the first 3km, then my plotted route was fenced off so I just turned around and ran home. Only managed 7km. Oh well.
  23. Tonight I smashed a 1,000m straight set at 2:17/100m and felt fresh when I finished. Have not changed much except I started doing a lot more sets with paddles and have been focusing on upper body strength. Feeling a lot more positive about my swimming again. Maybe by year end I could see 2:00/100m.
  24. Thanks - I was just being funny. Or trying to be... I do track and tempo runs every week. Still slow. It's going to be a long slog for me, but I am ok with that. It's about the journey, right?
