  1. Bikehub party. I will miss it because I am so slow though...
  2. Nice distances there. Can't you train at a gym instead? 13c is pretty cold as well, even in a wet suit... You are very dedicated. I won't even get into water that is below 18c.
  3. Today I asked my coach to up my running volume. What is happening to me!? I used to swear I am not a runner (ok, maybe a jogger, but you get the point).
  4. Post workout I will eat some watermelon or an orange - usually within 30 minutes. Then will have a meal about an hour later with a good amount of protein. If I don't have a meal, will try have a protein shake. Protein shakes don't sit too well with me as I usually feel a little queezy afterwards, so have not been good in this area.
  5. I signed up for the Northgate 10km on the 9th. It will be my first purely running race. Training for Bela Bela (Olympic tri) so will treat this as a long easy run. Such a newbie I got flu a few weeks back, felt better, trained for a few days at a lighter effort, and the flu came back as bronchitis. Took some time to heal up with proper rest when I was sure I was 100% I started training at a very light pace. Rather put your feet up, eat well and wait it out. Has taken my HR 2 weeks to come back to it's usual levels.
  6. I do have the time, and have experience in training dogs too. Also have the guidance of one of SA's top dog trainers, so I think I am covered. I adopted a rescued Africanis, and her spine is fusing (vet suspects from physical trauma when she was a pup) so her overall health is not too great, so I am a little hesitant to get another dog right now. This is not a decision I take lightly.
  7. Gorgeous Hacc! This is the breed I am seriously considering: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malinois_dog
  8. When I hear stories like this, I want to throw caution to the wind. Sounds awesome. I actually found the article you are referring to a little earlier: http://www.runnersworld.com/running-with-dogs/the-best-types-of-dogs-for-runners
  9. I did not know that. Thank you. I am considering a Belgian Shepard (I love big dogs). Will however need to consult a vet and fully understand their training before making a decision.
  10. But they already are. I run outside once a week: usually on Sunday afternoon. I have been chased (when I was much younger) and I can tell you it's terrifying. It still plays on my mind. I can handle being robbed, but as a woman running on the roads is risky and some could argue silly. I am actually considering getting a puppy and training it up to run with me. This is obviously a very big decision, so still sleeping on it.
  11. Seems like a great guy... So calm and collected. Ultra running really creates a lot of mental strength.
  12. n+1. #justsaying
  13. I am getting a little frustrated with my swimming. I have never been a "swimmer" or had any coaching, so when I started, I had to self teach. I am comfortable in the water and enjoy swimming. There are plenty resources online to help, but I am not sure what my issue is. I am averaging 2:14 per 100m over around 400m. For long distances I settle into a 2:28 per 100m in the pool. Since Feb, I have managed to shave off around 20 seconds off my long distance pace, but that is due to increasing fitness and fixing form issues. Now I have just hit a wall and feels like no amount of drills or time in the pool will make me faster at this stage. FWIW, I have 4 pool sessions a week: long swim, tempo swim, aerobic swim and a high intensity swim. I do drills with fins, paddles and a kickboard. Garmin Connect says my stroke rate is 20 per minute. I take it that this is actually the stroke rate for one arm? So that would put me on the low end at 40 spm. Before I go spend a lot of money on swim masters or swim analysis, I would like to try fix this myself (want to save up for a TT bike). So I suspect it's my stroke rate that's causing my lack of progress. Anyone have any insights?
  14. Not really open water related, but fits the general theme. I have been struggling to get into the pool lately, so ordered some new kit from Tyr. It always helps with motivation (and speed). Saw these goggles on special, which I thought is a steal: http://tyr.co.za/product/swedish-lo-pro-mirrored/
  15. I get plenty greetings while out in the Cradle...
  16. I will be bottom 5%, so no thanks. I will just amble along my runs as per usual. Question for the seasoned runners here. Do you find that your HR is a bit high after being sick for a while? My HR is still high. About 10 to 15bpm higher than normal whilst doing my LSD pace.
  17. Thanks guys. Lots of great clubs around. Just saw that my company has a running club, so going to give them a shot. Maybe I can get them to sponsor some race fees too!
  18. Our little tri-community here is awesome. And the Runners too. They are a special (and crazy) bunch. Welcome to triathlons. Be prepared to spend all your disposable cash very quickly
  19. I am 1.81 and am either a large, or 56cm frame (for my Cervelo). Also changes from brand to brand so you will need to double check.
  20. Good luck! Better advise (and even more important than the bike) is to find a program and stick to it. Consistency is more important than the program I think, but a good program will get your speed and fitness up quickly (with less chance of injury). MPG have a free trial month if you want to get a feel of what a program should look like. It's also a good indicator of the type of training you will need for longer distances. There are also free options online, and some other coaching type options to look at.
  21. If you are going to do an Ironman, you are going to have to train on the road. Unless you want to do your long rides on an indoor trainer.
  22. Are you planning on doing any further tris? If so, I would recommend buying an aero road bike. I would shop around here and start with a second hand bike if you don't have a lot of spare cash. There are some pretty decent deals floating around.
  23. Hi Guys, Think I should join a running club as I am planning on doing some more road races this year. Looking for some suggestions. I am based in Fourways, Gauteng. I don't need any training advise, but may join them on training days it if aligns with my current plan.
  24. Too late for me. Want to do one for my 40th. Which gives me 4 years. I doubt very much I will want to do more than one as I prefer triathlons to just running. So think it's a good time to cross off a bucket list item.
