  1. And then the second day we did the red route at Greyton, a big storm was moving into the Western Cape, we escaped the rain but were thrown about and nearly blown off the trail by a pumping north wester.
  2. An old friend and I went on a two day "training camp". The first day we did Groenlandberg.
  3. About 10-12 years ago on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon a buddy and I cycled from Durbanville to his parents home in Pinelands and there on a whim decided to cycle up Table Mountain. We went up the track at Constantia nek and carried on up the concrete track up to the Waterworks Museum. We ignored the no cycling sign at the start of the concrete track. We did not see a single person on the mountain that day, the weather was too bad. We were stupid and lucky not to get caught. In those days there were not as many off road cyclists and the competition for trail space was not as fierce. I will not recommend others to break the law, in today's climate it will negatively affect all the other law abiding cyclists and will make the job of advocates for responsible cycling, such as Kandui very difficult. He is doing a lot of work to get Sanparks to see our point of view. Send him a pm to get his opinion or advice.
  4. Top of Majic Forest next to Piet Kubaans' electric fence.
  5. Did a solo Durbanville-Slent-Leeuwendans-Eensaamheid-Joostenbergvlakte-Fisantekraal-Durbanville loop
  6. My advice to those of you who find it difficult to get away from the office / factory / work is to follow my example: I married the boss and now I can do what I want, well almost
  7. Dr Scott reported that the patient was slightly overweight, that he developed shortness of breath and started perspiring during the examination and he suggested a series of return visits over an extended time to see if my condition will improve. He noted with approval, a little weight loss since the previous visit.
  8. Just before lunch today, I decided it was time for a cycle before tonights anticipated rain. I told our admin lady that I have an appointment with Dr Scott. So I went home and took my Scott for a spin around Spes Bona.
  9. Here is what it looks like in the wind up and sprint during the last km of a stage in the pro tour, not a place for the faint hearted. http://t.co/4IReTHrF44
  10. A few years ago we stayed in Barn 62.
  11. I did the Onrus Hawston Karwyderskraal Hemel & Aarde Hermanus loop.
  12. Cederberg yesterday, first an hour into the driving rain then I turned back and about 6 k's from the place we stayed my chain broke and I couldn't fix it, my fingers was too cold and I cannot see without my glasses. So it was a case of HTFU and I jogged back pushing the bike in the rain and the mud. Was fun in a weird way.
  13. I finished Hinacapie last night. It improved slightly, but still an average little book. Don't waste your money, there are better cycling books to read. Then started with the Wegelius book. Looks promising.
  14. Ha ha, 3 chapters. If you compared my reading ability to Georges' cycling ability, I'll take it as a compliment. Sort of. Backhanded.
  15. I started reading George Hincapie's book last night. I am underwhelmed by the starting chapters, hope it improves.
  16. Not quite today, but the only time on a bike during the last five weeks was a bike trip through Barcelona. They have lots of bike lines and special bicycle traffic lights and also a system where you pay an annual fee and that allows you to use the commuter bikes parked in special bays all over the city.
  17. He has a famous South African cycling name: Lourens Meintjies was South Africa's first world champion in any sport. In 1893, three years before the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Meintjies won the 50-mile cycle race in a world-record time at the first world championship event in Chicago. He never made it to the Olympics, SA missed the first couple and only participated from 1904.
  18. I spoke to one of the organisers last week. Last year was the first time that anyone of the organisers were involved in such an event. They expected a 100 people and about 750 turned up on the day and they were simply overwhelmed. This year they partnered with the PPA and will be ready for 2000+ particpants.
  19. We used to take Frans Conradie down to one block before Vanguard, hop a few pavements, go over the train bridge and then under the road bridge through Thornton and Pinelands and the Southern Suburbs.
  20. Yip, I will also put a few bob on these two.
  21. I did Hoogekraal this morning. I concentrated on two things: opening my hips, ie twisting it to the right when doing a right turn and also pushing my right knee to the right, went much smoother through the corners.
  22. Thanks for all the advice, but I failed to mention that my main problem is going uphill where you have to continue pedalling through the turn, failing which you will loose momentum and tumble over. Outside pedal down and keeping pressure on that pedal certainly helps when you go downhill or have enough momentum to go through the bend without the need to pedal.
  23. Well Cellar, with all the rain you had in Gauteng, a surfboard might be a better option on your trails this weekend. Thanks Maxxis, I will try the twisting hips. I am under the impression that I do look ahead on the trail, but maybe I tense up in a right hander and drop my head.
  24. Why is it easier for me to execute a tight left turn on a single track? I find it much more difficult to go right. I thought it was because I am right handed and my right leg (outside leg on the turn) is dominant and therefore I have more control, but today I spoke to a left handed cycling buddy and he has the same problem. I surf left foot forward and uncleat left first.
  25. Vetseun, I see you like this comment, a 3:20 weighing a 100 kgs is fairly easy, I did it about 2 years ago, but going 3:15 and faster will require a serious commitment to training and weight management
