  1. Thanks for your comment and good point. After 36 hours neither the head unit nor the battery radiates any heat - my assumption is that this is due to the low lumen setting. As soon as I test for the next (higher) lumen setting I will make use of the fan as you suggested.
  2. 18650s yes. No BMS for three reasons: 1. Price - seeing as I am only using 4 cells, a good BMS would cost the same as the cells thus not worth the money 2. BMS is good for display but none is needed for the system, i.e. no place for the software to report to which goes back to issue 1. 3. Vibration. The less components I use, the less chance of damage to components. The only circuitry involved is a small PCM, this seems to be the industry standard.
  3. Ever since I had a battery failure on the 2017 Trans Baviaans the topic of bicycle lights started to interest me. An electrical engineer by trade - I figured that this cannot be as complicated and expensive as the market seems to suggest. Over the last 4 years (on and off) I have tested the good, the cheap and the ugly when it comes to batteries for endurance riding. My findings have led me to build my own prototype and yesterday I finally came to testing it with known parameters. For the first test, I have used the Extreme Lights Endurance light which seems to be most used light for the rides that I have mentioned above. My test setup includes a GoPro with sequence shooting at 60 second intervals within clear view of my G-Shock which was used for timing. Extreme Lights claim 40+ hours' run time at the 200 Lumen setting when used with their 5200mAh battery - I am using the same Lumen setting but my battery is designed to produce 6800mAh at the same voltage. My test is 24 hours in and things are looking good thus far - I will keep posting on this thread for anyone that is interested. After the test is completed I will share some findings which may or may not be informative/trivial.
  4. Hi guys, A non-hub member asked me to post on his behalf.
  5. That's him yes - still resides in Bloem.

  7. I had the privilege of doing a photo shoot with Peter Haley on Friday and Saturday and I simply can’t stop thinking: “why isn’t this guy famous yet”? Danny Macaskill used to be my hero until 3 days ago, but all of a sudden his “fantasy stunts” have been moderated by someone a lot closer to home. Peter is not on the hub or any other form of social media, and ever so humble about his skills on the bike. Seeing as there’s no official trials competitions for him to compete in, he started with motorbike trials about two years ago and will surely be a force to reckon with. He features in a Youtube video called “death cookies” and the video has an amazing number of views: 454. No Red Bull or Tarty bike sponsors- but he still puts in the work every day. Truly inspirational guy. Peter does expo’s at big events every now and then with a mate of his, if anyone is interested in booking him- please give me shout- we need to make this guy famous!
  8. Sorry for the hijack... I met two guys (also hubbers) at the bottom of the first big climb whos derailleur broke- we tried converting to a single speed but as soon as the oke peddled hard the chain sucked into the next "bigger ring" at the back. For future reference, what is the trick to converting to single speed en route?

    Bliss.
  10. City bowl FTW!
  11. I do something silly every year to raise money for the Children's Hospital Trust Argus team. Didn't take the GoPro with on the day of the ride- but there's some footage of the pre-ride the day before. This video sums up my whole Argus weekend experience https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151965671791931
  12. Sorry for not paying, honest mistake like I explained in the post above. Maybe entered at the wrong gate or the official was still sleeping. WIll make right the next time i visit
  13. We entered the reserve before 6am, definetly didn't jump any fence to entered illegally and there were no person in sight to collect money. Will drive around for a few more loops next time to look for someone to give my money to and even pay double- it was worth it Had to leave for Clarens early- but look for additional single tracks, i heard there's plenty. http://www.strava.com/activities/135128842
  14. Google "wolhuterskop nature reserve" in Bethlehem. Lotsa nice trails for loops, good views and plenty game. Entrance is also free!
  15. Some guys join the hub for the classifieds only and don't really participate on the forums due to whatever reasons. I was a member for 2 years before my first post on a forum, so cut the OP some slack for doing research before he drops some moola at a store- especially with the CS episode still fresh in everyone's mind.

    Emperors Race

Was a lekker route! Loved the "forrest section"- had good fun!
  17. Got my GoPro Hero 2 HD from the Hub @ R2600. The whole kit and case was (and still is) probably worth R7500. I take mine diving, kayaking, MTBing and Hiking- need to buy a second battery for those long trips. Get one!
  18. 1) You are spot on in the case of a "send back", although if you bring your bike for a first time service you will be queueing like the rest of the "normal people". 2) True, and blame is usually accepted and the "send back" is fixed free of charge, usually with some discount. As a matter of interest- how many cases have you heard of doctors getting the diagnosis wrong, and how many of them have paid fines or even been sued? Have you been cured immediatly with the medicine the doctor prescribed to you? Every single time? Let's compare apples with apples here... Sorry, sorry, sorry! What I meant was- yes sir- you are right
  19. Did the 40km in 2011 and swore I would never go there again. Started taking my HTFU pills on 3 January 2014. Entered the 75km last week. Advice welcome (needed!).
  20. Thanks TW. As i'm reading your post I'm nodding me head- although I've only been working there for a short while, I know exactly what you're talking about regarding single moms and punctures, and especially little guys on BMXes. I as kid I had many BMXes and the Oom next door used to alway fix my ride seeing as my dad is bit technically challenged. Good to see the small guys still being passionate about riding a bike and not all hooked up on PS4 or stuck behind the PC. Can see myself doing this for the next 8 years too
  21. You are quite right Wayne. This is not part of the normal SA POLICE/Traffic officer's job. Crime/speeding doesn't take a break while there's a race going on...
  22. Hi guys, I'm looking for some input from the single speed wizards. After thinking way too long about it, I've decided to start my own single speed project. Due to some great contacts, I have access to a wide variety of old and newer second hand frames. My current MTB is a 26" dualie, so I was quite keen to build the single speed on a second hand 29er frame. But today I saw a awesome old school Trek mtb frame, and thought that the classic look looks awesome. I will be using the bike for short distance commuting and just to play around with mostly. The 29er frame will be a pimp up bike, while the 26er will have a old school look. Which one do I build (first )?
