  1. My approach has always been to average about 40km-50km per week in December, and then kick it up to about 70km per week in January in anticipation for a qualifier in February. All done at normal running pace. I'm still going to follow this approach, but going to stick with 2 "quality" sessions per week: Fast, flat-out 5km on tuesdays, and stairs (because Centurion is flat) on Thursdays. LSD on Sundays for December and early January, until schools starts again.
  2. I'm also about to change to new shoes. For the past 1.5 years I've running and racing in the New Balance Zante. This last pair has really not given me any satisfaction - It feels a drag running in them and very un-inspirational (almost like the shoes are punishing me for running in them). So I'm going to give two shoes and two brands a go now. Brand 1 will be Adidas and will be either the Ultra Boost ST or the Supernova ST (still a bit undecided). The other brand is a re-entry into the running market - will let you know later how that worked out or not, but keen to give it a go.
  3. Monties is on my list for next year. Plenty of positives: It is close to Gauteng; relatively cheap; plenty accommodation options; my wife will not do an ultra trail, so I don't have to wait for her. And maybe it is time for Skyrun Lite as well. I'm 40 next year - bederf jouself.
  4. I see yours is the longest. I mean highest...
  5. I'm still feeling tired after Sunday's run. Also taking a bit a break before starting our build up towards our qualifier in January, which most probably will be the Akasia marathon. Followed by the Deloitte marathon end of February. I did 2h36 on Sunday (and my wife 2h53), so the push will be on for next year to see if I can maybe get B seeding for Oceans.
  6. I already told you where to park. Next year I will tell you where to find the toilets that are not so busy (and also not temporary).....
  7. While checking out my Tough One results this morning I noticed I did a 20sec PB on Tough One yesterday (yes, know it is not much), even though my endurance was not quite there on the last 5km. So at least my leg speed is getting back to where it was 3-4 years ago.
  8. I also had a enjoyable run at Tough One yesterday, except the last 5k where I suffered quite a bit. Weather was nice, although it was getting warm towards the end!
  9. That's the one. They recommend it every year, yet is always empty.
  10. On Nola Circle and Holland Ave. We usually enter from Judy Avenue, via Forbes and Rebublic. This way we don't get stuck in the traffic of people trying to park at Old Parktonians.
  11. I will be at Tough One for my 8th one. The thought was initially to do the Workers Run at the beginning of November, but that has since changed. FYI. We usually park at Nola Park. Always plenty of parking with security.
  12. That makes 2 of us.... Also reminds me that I must hop over to Sweatshop to enter!
  13. Ignore it... My calf has been singing to me the past 2 years, since injuring my back. If you ignore it long enough you get used to it (or the calf goes numb, which is even better).
  14. Sterkte. Hopefully and probably nothing serious (like a bit of hay fever or something)..
  15. No marathons for me until next year. Will be doing my 8th consecutive Tough One this year - of which only the first one was on the old route and so far remains my PW for Tough One/32km. We have a church obligation the 26th of November, so we are going to abuse our position as previous members of RAC and do the workers run the 12th of November
  16. I'm also keen to try out Hoka. Specifically the Clayton 2's which seems to be on special all over the place..
  17. My current work/family life doesn't lend itself to do have a structured training plan. So what I try to do per week is: 2 sessions of 4km to 5km @ 20-30second/km faster than 10km race pace. 3-4 sessions of 7km to 11km @ 20-30sec/km slower than 10km race pace. 1 LSD on a Saturday/Sunday @ 40-60sec/km slower than 10km race pace. I will let you know next year March how it works...
  18. From what I've heard it is really an awesome event! On my bucket list. So next year maybe...
  19. I couldn't agree more! These days I buy what is on special. The past 2 years I've ran in Saucony (4mm), New Balance(6mm) and Asics(6mm) road shoes. I just know I killed (destroyed) the Asics' cushioning before even 500km (and it had the crappiest upper I've ever experienced in my whole running career). The Saucony Kinvara's was good for 800km before the sparsely placed rubber pads disappeared. New Balance Zante's are good for 1000km..
  20. Can't remember exacly, but Wolkberg last year was something like R500 if you stay off-campus and R900 fully catered. For me it is currently the best value for money trail run by far. Even if you stay off campus (like we did), it still works out fairly cheap.
  21. I wish... Stunning part of South Africa that. I will be there next year for Giant's Cup though.
  22. Nope, not us. It was originally my plan to do a fast-ish 21 at Jakaranda, but the children are a bit gatvol at sleeping over at ouma and oupa the whole time... So instead the plan is to do a 20km+ run Saturday morning on our own, with kids only have to be at ouma's place for 2hr. Speaking of long runs. We did a RAC club run again this past weekend. Really enjoy clubruns so much more than races. No fighting traffic or struggling to find parking. No over-crowding..Such a pity that no club in Pretoria offers the same.
  23. Software bug?? I had a VW Polo that every now and again would swop the buttons for the electric windows around (i.e. the right button would open left window). I figured out if I lock and unlock the car via the remote it 'resets' the car's computer and it is fine again.... But on a more serious note, I think it is maybe due to you compensating or protecting the injured leg, causing problems to show up on the opposite leg?
