  1. This is what works for me. Below 10degrees: Running shorts. I will use a long sleeve shirt. Below 5 degrees: Running shorts. I will wear a long sleeve (Dryfit shirt) over a normal running shirt (also Dryfit material). I will add running gloves and a skullcap. First thing I take off is the skullcap, then gloves and lastly the long sleeve top. And I've used this for runs as cold as -4degrees... Two years ago I used a thermal top on day 1 of Wolkberg (0 degree start) . After 4km I had to take the damn thing off, and carry it with me for the next 33km. Lesson learnt - It must feel a little cold at the start of your run. Once you start running your body heats up very, very quickly!
  2. I will do that! Go full circle on my left leg.
  3. One positive for me though. I switched trail shoes this year. Moved from Inov8 to Nike. Up to now I've use it three times, not being entirely confident it was the right choice. All 3 runs felt sluggish. But when I used them yesterday it felt like almost a different shoe (they really felt "alive" during yesterday's run). Really comfortable with proper amount of ground feel and cushioning!
  4. So far this year it has been one problem after the other. Started the year off with calf injury. Had many other niggles after that (knee, ankle, hamstring..). Got sick about 3 days before OMTOM, and it took me about 3 weeks to get well. And this weekend I "tweaked" my back, working at home. Extremely frustrating, because something happens everytime I just get going properly... Yet, I'm really really looking forward to my trail run in 2.5 weeks time!
  5. Almost 3 weeks after OMTOM and I'm still struggling to shake the "after" effects of the cold I had - this cough just don't want to disappear completely. Next up for us is this one, in about a months time: http://www.thegiantscup.co.za/
  6. Good luck. Seems like it is not my year either. I started to get sick 3 days before OMTOM. Two and half weeks later and I'm still not 100%...
  7. That is the biggest problem with nike - only a limited range available in store. About a year ago I bought my Terra Kigers online at nike.co.za. They should have the Fly available, but you are going to wait a bit (I think it took about 2 weeks for my shoes to get to SA) and delivery costs are going to be steep (R250, unless you buy 2 pairs).
  8. Up until the end of last year I used to run in the New Balance Zante (6mm shoe, same as my then trail shoe). Overall they worked quite well, exepct that the lack of cushioning was starting to get to me (my left knee was giving me endless pain). And that is basically where most of my problems started for this year. So first I went for a 8mm neutral cushioned from Reebok. I didn't allow myself enough time to transition into this shoe and picked up a calf injury. After my marathon in January I felt, hell why not try another shoe and went with the Adidas Ultraboost ST. Initially it felt okayish, albeit a bit heavy. This caught up with my big time in Two Oceans, where my left hamstring went into spasm at 28km already.. So the moral of my story. To switch shoes take time, especially if you go from a relatively more minimalistic shoe to something traditional. So what I'm doing now is to train in the heavy shoes, and mix it up the different drops (4mm to 10mm), to basically train/exercise all the leg muscles. Anything more than 32km, I will go for the lightest shoe in my collectionwhich in in my case is the Reebok. When your legs are tired, you feel it 4 times more with heavy shoes. Even my new trail shoes are lighter than the Adidas. I thought the extra stability of the Adidas will help my later on in Oceans - It helped boggerol. My shoe rant/problems this year...
  9. I'm finally back from my OMTOM holiday. I had a crappy run (and PW) - It all started with me getting sick on Wednesday before the race. So I guess I will need to do it next year again. Now to use this base for my next run on the 18/19 May
  10. I think you will manage okay. I've seen in previous years guys sneaking up from as far back as E batch, right to the front at A batch when they drop the the tape separating the seeding blocks.
  11. I had a discussion a while back with tjommies3 regarding the logistics the morning of the race. Anybody want to offer some tips?? Ours is quite simple. No car to the start. We stay in a guest house about 1.5km from the start. We will leave there about 5:30 to take up a spot in our seeding block no later than 5:45. After the run it is a 1km walk back to the guest house (all down hill). Only catch is you have to book for 4 nights.
  12. OMTOM number 4 for me. Most of my goals went out of the window with my injury problems in January. I will be pleased if it is better than last year's 5:30...
  13. We planned on doing the Denel race (because it just 10km from home and I have VIP parking), but we have babysitter problems for Saturday morning. So we are considering making the trip through to RAC for their Sunday club run which I always enjoy. EmJayZA??
  14. You are going to run funny with those shoes... Good luck. See you on the road pretty soon!
  15. Jammer om te hoor. Sterkte! One positive thing is that you have a good base behind you. In December I only did 80km in total (due to my calf injury), yet at the end of January I've managed to do a marathon. And it wasn't as if I suffered - It was by far my best marathon in 18months.
  16. Edited post. Checked CW's results and saw her time for Deloitte last year was 3:20. Her results for this year's Deloitte are not on raceresults though.. Also, up until last year May she was on Strava, but not anymore. Looks like something's up.
  17. Did he get a haircut with the helmet still on??
  18. Just OMTOM in March for us. Then on April 1 the trail running season starts, until End of September. But we will only start training on the 4th of April when we will be back from the Cape. Training is going okayish. Defintely a niggle here and there that I'm still trying to shake, most notably my left calf that is a bit tender and tight - getting night cramps as well. I'm into my second peak week of ~85km/week and will start tapering next week. I should get to Oceans with 750km+ on the legs from January. But as I've seen from my 3 previous attempts anything can happen on the day.
  19. I once again really enjoyed Sunrise Monster. Every person has his/her distance which is just perfect for them, and for me I believe that to be a 32km. We finished on 2h52 without any fireworks, except for the last 3km. And it includes a 32km PB for my wife as well. Awesome race.
  20. Checking out last years route map, I see the first lap is about 20km and not halfway, i.e. 21.1km. So you have a good 6-7min you "save" there.
  21. Sunrise Monster 32k training run. Aim is to run it nice and slow.
  22. I think the biggest mistake I made was to convince my wife to run marathons and ultra as well, and becoming her running partner as well.. I guess we are lucky in a sense that I work for a SOC and work is at minimum at the moment (and they allow flexi time as well). So we drop the kids off at school at about 7:20. 7:30 we hit the road and do anything from 10km-15km. 9ísh I'm at work.
  23. I seriously don't know how you guys manage to find time to train. Early mornings?? Luckily I'm not in the Comrades game, or not yet anyway. So a high mileage week is at most 90km, which will take up 8-8.5hr of my week. To fit that in with the various home/work commitments takes some very careful planning and sacrifices. And with no babysitters (as is currently the case with us) it is almost impossible.
  24. Just 5km left for the weekend. I will run from our house to the Bronberrik Parkrun, where I will meet up with my wife and children. While she then runs the parkrun, I will walk the first lap (~2km) with the children, listening to them complain and moan the whole way. Our babysitters are still out of town, so we did our long run this morning. About 23km.
