  1. I was considering doing it, but I'm still not in shape to do a marathon. And €72 for a half-marathon feels a bit steep to me. I likely go and support the runners somewhere along the route though.
  2. It has been a very, very long time since I lasted posted on this thread. I have not done a lot of races these past 2/3 years - been struggling massively with my left knee for quite some time and finally got it fixed in August. So I'm slowly building up again, but hopefully will run a marathon or 2 in the next year. We are moving as well, so I will find out later it will be more trail or more road next year....
  3. My Oupa had a farm right at the top of the Piekenierskloofpas. We went there every December Holiday. But we never thought of doing a bit MTBing or being active - spend our time in front of the TV most days (stupid). What I would give to go there now...
  4. Same thing happened to me about two weeks ago. So I just decided to stuff the last part of our training programme and took a break for the 6 days before our run/race (which was this past weekend). Went to the chiropractor twice to get it sorted. My wife responded well to the break and ran a PB. I still suffered, but my back was fine though.
  5. These days I just can't stand overcrowding at these road races, along with the inconsiderate motorists and sharing 5 porta loos with a the other runners... Next week I'm doing a trail race in Drakensberg. I expect there won't be more than 60-70 running on the day. Heaven.
  6. That time of the year.... If you don't take medicine it will take about 7 days to clear. With medicine about a week. I had a sinus infection beginning of last week. I kept my runs short and slow on Monday to Thursday. Cleared up good enough by Friday, only to evolve into severe toothache. Started the 30km run on Satarday with the toothache. I don't know if it is the endorphins, but toothache was gone during the entire run (felt it again afterwards though). Same for Sunday's 21km... But those two runs through Johannesburg was some of the most enjoyable running I've done so far this year. I really miss running in Joburg...
  7. My 2c. If had 2 pairs of Freedom up to now, with about 600km on each. I pronate severly with my right foot, so the right shoe is now finished on both. So I've switched over to the New Balance Vongo for daily training. I've also bought a pair of Kinvaras that I will use for racing - if I keep mileage below 400km on a set they last okay. I've done marathons in the Kinvara before and they work well for me. I enjoyed the Freedom alot, but at R2.8k it is getting really expensive. At my current running rate I must buy new Freedoms every 2 months...
  8. Which Nike are you looking at: Terra Kiger or Wildhorse? I'm using the Terra Kiger (still on v3) and very happy with them. Extremely comfortable. My fastest 10km so far this year was done in them, running off road. But it doen't really count for anything - I'm not the fastest bloke around.... The Wildhorse wil be similar the Terra Kiger 3 just with a bit of an higher drop and the added forefoot Zoom pad if I remember correctly. I can't really comment on the new Terra Kigger 5. It is a completely new shoe by the look of things.
  9. I see Runzone also have an Easter 100 this year, although we will probably end up with doing the Randburg Harriers 100 (a bit closer to Centurion). The plan is to do only days 2 and 3. We are not entered for any Ultras at the moment, so no need for the extra punishment of day 1.
  10. I'm not doing Oceans (this year) or Comrades(probably ever), but I'm sitting at 820km so far for the year. My wife and I are doing a stage trail race mid May, so aiming to be at ~1200km or there about then. Good luck everybody with your training!
  11. Alot better than the 30m - 70m koppies at 1600m sea level that we get here in Centurion.
  12. Actually, John's four sons make up the band Kongos..
  13. I can't confirm if they indeed closed down, but I haven't seen any activity for the past year or so (i.e. time trials). I do know Denel club is/was heavily involved with other races such as the Wierie Road race and Zwarkops Lapa race. But with less than 40 members you are going to struggle to host a race. For the loss of races I blame mostly the virtual club in orange... All the big clubs are losing members to this monster. Irene club just across the road from Denel had at some point close to 800 members, but I believe they are now less than 500. They cancelled the Irene Lantern this year. At some point RAC had more than 2000 members and I would like know how many they have now??
  14. I'm using an old Tomtom Runner 1 with a Mio heart rate sensor. Information from that is pretty much useless. But I must add, that I have hairy arms/wrists (not mad like Esau from the bible). Maybe somethin to do with that? The first GPS watch I bought was a Garmin Forerunner 305. I had all the good intentions of using the interval trainer ect., but it just never happened. So with my Tomtom I'm happy with a watch that is easy to use and easy to log. If a Casio had the same functionality, I would have been equally happy. So for me it was a good R1000 investment.
  15. I did my 3rd Sunrise Monster on Saturday, and again it was an awesome race. 32km is certainly the distance I enjoy the most! The plan was to do an easy 3h run and we finished a bit faster on 2h55. I ended up on 33km - I ran up the hills and the backed up to run with my wife again the last parts.
  16. I'm still using version 3 with only about 150km on them - not a lot of trail running to be done if you live in the city. Version 4 is very similar to version 3, but is now also discontinued. There are a few sizes left that you can stil buy online. Version 5 is a completely new shoe, with React midsole.. Unfortunately I don't know the release date. So if you want a pair of the current TK, you better hurry up.
  17. I so much want to like and use Nike shoes, but high drop neutral shoes just does not want to work with my gait - especially with my right foot that pronates severly (left foot is neutral). So my road shoe of choice currently is the Saucony Freedom, which I rate to be a very very good shoe. However, my trail shoe is the Nike Terra Kiger. In the past 3 years, my two fastest 10km runs were done in these. Superb shoe..
  18. I feel as much with a 10mm shoe (Adidas Ultra Boost) as with the Saucony Freedoms. I injured by back at the end 2015 whille moving house. But instead of going to a doctor to get it sorted, I foolishly thought I could train through it. Ended up with nerve damage in my leg/calf. I couldn't even do heel raises. The "command" from brain just doesn't get to the muscles, as if it is interrupted. Took about 6 months to heal. Since then it has always felt "tight". It has been better the past 3-4 months though. I try to get on the bicycle more often - it feels like it streches the calf more gently and is not as load-bearing...
  19. I'm also done with races for the rest of the year. January included as well.... Our usual babysitters are away on holiday and I need a break anayway. I've logged 2300km for the year up to date which I think is a fair effort. I uploaded my Tough One data to SportTracks (I'm old school) on Friday. Although I got a 30sec PB, I'm still a good 5min away from 2:30. Marginal gains. So next year it seems, for my 10th Tough One. One positve for the year is that I've solved my knee problems by reverting to a lower drop shoe again . I'm still not quite on top of my left calf problem yet and I felt it getting numb and non responsive again during Tough One. So I will see what the New Year holds for me.
  20. And beer? I drank a beer at 27km on a Trail run in May this year. Up until that point I was a cramping struggling mess. That beer solved it... After about 4 hrs I usually need some solid food. Prefer something like Racefood's date and cranberry farbar.
  21. Yesterday was one of the harder Tough Ones I've done. Struggled to get going and just never really got into it. Decided after 2km to just not look at my watch anymore and try to run as comfortable as possible. So I ended up being 'only' 30sec faster than last year.
  22. I will be there for my 9th (consecutive) Tough One. My wife will be there for her 4th. Only my first one in 2010 was on the old route - that was one hard route. A race that enjoy very much!
  23. Even on the New Balance Zante's I've used, after about 600km the right shoe was severly out of alignment (as you put it). Sloping inwards. The Freedoms are a revelation for me. Together with Ultraboosts I've used the New Balance Borocay(4mm) in rotation. They have also treated me well and hold up well for 800km. No colapsing of midsole or nothing. Only the upper has worn through. So I was fairly confident that another 4mm shoe should work for me. But Freedom blows all of them away. A really nice shoe!
  24. Agree with you, about going to extreme (minimal and maximalist). I'm now transitioning into Saucony Freedoms (4mm drop). I pronate severely with my right foot where as my left foot is neutral. I can use 8mm drop neatral shoes, but after 400km they are shot. I tried Adidas UltraBoost stability - that made my right foot happy, but my "correction" is too much for my left knee. I found with the 4mm everthing is happy and with the Freedoms I have enough cushioning as well..
