  1. Good run Stretch! We had a sub-par but not a bad run. Ran the whole way with my wife and finished in 5:32. I got a bit of cramps going down on Chappies, but other than that nothing serious. I think our biggest mistake was getting late to the start. We entered our seeding block right at the back and struggled with crowds. Our first 10km took as 60min - we did the last ten in under 57min). At 28km we both took a pitstop (note to myself - women take 4 times longer...). I ran extremely comfortably up Chappies, but waited 3min for my wife at the top. And from there we basically ran together, albeit I bit slowly to the finish. When we went through the 21km at only 2hr, I already knew we were going to finish 10-15 later than planned. So adjusted my/our goals from there. On the positive side, my knees felt absolutely fantastic on Saturday and my wife is already keen on next year. So I guess we're going back.
  2. It sounds like alot, but almost 100km of that was over one weekend (African X). My wife and I trained for a trail run last year May. We were also entered for a trail run in August last year. So we started our training for the May trail run in March last year and just didn't stop. So it was relatively easy to just increase mileage in Jan.
  3. I need 3.5km to make it 1000km for the year - so I will do that this afternoon. Then I will taper, rest and carboload for the rest of the week...
  4. Unfortunately not for me. My introvert personality and crowds don't mingle so lekker.. Did a trail run last year where there were only 58 entries. It was perfect!
  5. I see this as perfect timing. Rather be sick this week than next week. Also been struggling with sinus, sore throat en sneezing since the weekend. Gradually getting better. Confident that next week I will be 100%
  6. I will not take a top along to the start. It should be around 10deg. If I'm outside for 5min I get accustomed to the cold. 30min before the start the seeding blocks are full and it will feel warmer with all the people anyway.
  7. R2.8k. Dammit, but shoes are expensive. I bought my latest pair of NB from Totalsports on a sale in January. It is still V1 where V3 is already out. Paid R850. My trail shoes were R600 on a sale on Inov8's website.
  8. I will probably do the same as I did for my previous 2 runs - Take off the whole of next week. The plan is about 12km tomorrow + 4km high intensity run, 10km on Friday and 23km long run on Sunday. And that is it.
  9. Never have and never will take Myprodol or any NSAIDS for any endurance event. Only HTFU pills on the day.
  10. Probably last. Physically: my body (read knees) are just really suffering too much these days on tar. Mentally: I had enough of the large crowds and just the logistics of getting to start with all the people and all the cars at road races. Also, since I'm from Gauteng it is getting very expensive to go down each year. I will concentrate more on trail running after OMTOM - it is a bit easier on my ageing body. Me and my wife will be in Irene colours...
  11. So might just see you on the road/finish then...
  12. 3rd and last OMTOM ultra for me. My plan is to run with my wife up to Houtbay Cemetery (42km) and then push on through from there. Hoping for 5:00-5:15.
  13. I have a friend that says every new model Asics is heavier and stiffer than the model it replaces. He switched to Nike a few years ago. I'm running in the NB Zante. Hardly an Ultra shoe, but has had no problems so far up to marathon distance. My wife is also using the Zante - previously used Nike Lunarglide and Saucony Guide. She had big problems with blisters until she switched to NB. Anyway, went for a 10km run this morning and suffered again a bit. Just tired... 340km March and 900km for the year so far.
  14. I have a knee cap tracking issue. Was struggling in February with it, but was okay beginning March. Then on first day of African X I slipped on a rock and stretched the knee a bit. Was fine for the rest of African X, but when i started my training again last week I noticed immediately that the knee is not 100%. Takes me about 10km to "warm-up" my knee, and then it seems fine... for now at least.
  15. How is everybody's training coming along with a bit more than 2 weeks to go before OMTOM? Your running plans for the weekend? I'm currently struggling. Still feeling properly tired. Added to that I have niggle with left knee that I just can't seem to shake. But the plan is still to do about 28km this Sunday. Will give me about 80km this week and the plan is 65-70km next week (sort of tapering).
  16. Last hard-ish week for me before OMTOM. Not doing Comrades (and probably never will), but will cheer for every athlete from my couch.
  17. Thanks for the info. I'm always looking for alternatives other than running a race - I prefer club runs since there are always a few people running and you run at a more acceptable pace. Added to that it is there are no cost to run and you don't have to be up before 4 to dodge traffic. We used to (and still do during the holidays) do RAC's club runs, but since it is on Sundays it interferes with church. Pity that no running club in Pretoria offer any club runs, expect Magnolia. But that also on a Sunday...
  18. How many people usually pitch up for an Old Eds Clubrun?? Only people from Old Eds, or is anybody welcome?
  19. Denel 21km tomorrow for me and the wife, with probably an added 4km to make it 25km. But will see how we feel. Still lekker moeg after African X and the pleasant tent sleeping..
  20. More or less out and back. A few loops added in Irene to make up distance on your way back. There is also a silly 2km loop you will need to do inside the ARC's grounds about 4km from the end. No shade there...
  21. Nope, does not quite look flat to me either. And I think the 390m elevation gain is a bit under estimated as well... I'm not going to do anything too long or dramatic before OMTOM. My long runs for the next 3 weeks will probably be: 26km, 30km and 23km. Weekly mileage will be in the order of 70km per week, with this week not more than 50km (while I try to recover from the past weekend).
  22. Not running nor helping at the race this year... Route is the same as last year. Link from Irene's website: http://www.irenerunner.co.za/modern-athlete-irene-ultra-and-half-marathon.html And a quick strava search revealed this: https://www.strava.com/activities/540918807
  23. Dams in Western Cape are looking not so good. From the airplane looked okayish, but up close terrible. Extremely dry....
  24. Ran around many dams this past weekend, but not around the one with the stench...
