  13. BarHugger, Thanks for your reply. Appreciate that you brought it back after it was mostly hijacked and it totally moved away from the topic. Also that you have put everything in perspective for the average guy to understand ! I realized that it is all about attitude..... I am not a racing snake and I do not own a roadbike. (and never have and never will) I am just a plain cyclist (mtb'er) to whom racing, power, time and weight is not important. What is important is my health and competing against my own capabilities. I think there is a lot of us on this forum ....... It was amazing to see how I struggled to get this view across, well at least you also saw that, and that is what we... the "not so serious" cyclist, are appreciating. I mererly wanted to understand if LTHR is tool that can be used to manage myself on a ride- be it training or in an organised race. I needed to know this, not to become fitter or stronger of faster but to manage my body during exercise. Commen Sense - the best answer ! Thanks for your input !! PS: I do have a heart condition, so it is important for me, from a lot of different perspectives
  14. Thanks Rouxtjie, I do hear what you say about dropping kg's but that is not my point....I can for sure drop weight but some of my mates have nothing to drop or they will fall through their own A--- ! It is not about performance or the difference, as you put it, or going faster, or not getting sooo tired....... it is about managing what I am doing, at all times during a ride......
  15. Back to....... LTHR (Lactate Threshold Heart Rate) Thanks for all the input guys, but I am a social/average (maybe dumb ) rider. I have lost you gurus way back allready . Lets say we are the cyclist who do not use Strava (that often...) and do not measure power...........we want to use our normal Garmin/Bryton or watever just to know when we are reaching- or when we are in, our max (RED) Zone. I thought that you have to know your LTHR to know when you are pushing yourself into the red zone, for too long periods of time, and that will reflect on your recover time.......ie you will take longer to recover or even have longer lasting damage ?? On a training ride of in a race I just want to be able to manage myself and not to hurt myself and be sorry afterwards.....if that make sense...?
  16. I have been told that the most important "stat / number/info" to know is your personnel LTHR Lets discuss LTHR (Lactate Threshold Heart Rate)................... 1)How important is this to know for the average MTB'er or Roadie ? 2) Where to go........... to get this info 3)When do you do the test ? ......When at your fittest ? or any time ? Please contribute, and post your views and comments, for us average cyclist, to understand

  18. I have done ecg's before (resting as well as stressed on a treadmill.......... for insurance policies) and everytime I was cleared and there were no problems. At 40 I decided to go to a Cardiologist for a routine checkup. This time I demanded a angiogram. My reason for this was that I am 40 and want a proper test done. I also heard rumours that the ECG'S does not always shows all.......... Not knowing at the time that it is quite a painfull procedure ! I have a family history of heart attacks on my father's side. My cholestrol was never too high and I never had high blood-pressure and I never ever smoked in my live ! My dad had all of above ! So I did not expect any problems! I was about 10 kg over weight and my livestyle was not too active since my knees were buggered from my rugby days. Well, the long and the short of my story is that I walked out of the hospital two days later with 5 Stents en my heart.......inherited cholestrol count way too high ! They considered a by-pass but they felt that I was young enough to rather go for stents. Arteries has to be blocked at least 75% and more, before they will put in Stents. The moral of the story is if you know that there is heart conditions in your family make sure you check yourself out. I was lucky, no heart damage and still no high blood pressure. I started mtb after this episode- changed my livestyle, get active and loose some weight. (and regular check-ups) I ride my mtb as hard as I can as often as I can for the last 6 years. Riding gave me reasurance that I will be fine ! Instead of being scared not to push myself too hard. (obviously everything I do is in moderation and in balance, without being irrisponsible !)My doctor told me to live a full live and not to hold back. Check yourself out ! It is in the interest of your family !!
