  1. I only saw bits and pieces in the afternoon edition as I was busy with other things, but to me it was dead boring coverage. I dont see any excitment in watching the elites race, the bunch is usually only half a dozen strong at the sprint and the rest are somewhere miles back down the road - whats so exciting about watching that? If it was a bunch of 50 or 60 sprinting for the line - hey sure - 5 or 6 - uninteresting.! I furthermore find the interviews with riders to be almost from the same sheet - good heavens man - think of some new challenging questions. In my opinion, as far as SA races go, I would far prefer to watch Mom and Pop pulling up the rear with a smile, a happy face and an original comment - but sadly, we seldom get much of this.
  2. Michelin Pro Race or if you want the cheaper version the Michelin Pro Graphite - frankly I have used both for ages and cant tell the differance - except in my wallet that is.!!! .............Concur with Gumpole - stick to the folded tyres.
  3. I would say in a race or out riding its very difficult and highly impractical to use any lubricant when removing or replacing a tyre. I dont believe any cyclist wantonly destroys his / her tyre - usually this is through ignorance or an impractical situation (like a race) I would expect tyre manufacturers and distributors to be aware of this and re-act accordingly - its one thing to say "you damaged the tyre - sorry" - but its another to look a bit deeper at the circumstances and act accordingly - sadly I think too few representitives of any company do this - they simply toe the company line - which should be flexable. On the other hand, as I said before - I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY BIKE WORKSHOP IN SA USING ANY LUBRICANT WHEN FITTING ANY TYRE - and I have had a fair number of contis fitted by *ahem* world class mechanics. Surely education starts at the dealer and is passed down - if my shop fits a tyre without lube, It could be argued that this practise would be considered as acceptable.................after all, they are presumed to be the experts, not me.!! widget2006-10-21 02:05:17
  4. I think this nonsense about "I didnt buy my bike at XYZ but they still help me with it for adjustments etc or they didnt make any money on the sale so they must be just so great" .............is just so much c**p.!!! It should not make any differance where you bought the product.!!Period!! I bought my car at one dealership but have it seviced at another, so what?? I still expect service form both dealers. I bought a Garmin in Sandton, but I asked for the software to be loaded in Bedforview - so what??- there was no issues, and no charge either.!!Both provided excellant service which I expect. Why should bike shops be differant?? I would suggest if a bike shop gives you the long dragging lip, because you bought your bike elsewhere and are now asking them to service it or do something - leave - take your business and your money elsewhere, they have no idea of customer service and wont be around long - start looking for another shop now.! widget2006-10-18 05:37:29
  5. I think the thread was "Why is Cajees cheaper" - personal experiences are all differant, some will have great experiences there, some not - thats business - you cant please everybody.! I think we can all agree on the reason why they are cheaper - Financially strong, run a sound business, buy in quantity at a discount price (and have the ability to pay for it) - very important!, have 6 outlets so a massive pull through, cater to the Mass Market not specialised high end lines - but of course will get it if you want it, have a sound retail knowledge - they know what sells and thats what they concentrate on. Personally I dont care where I buy, I am not interested in becoming the salesmans best friend, I dont need him to run up to me and greet me like he is, and I have no interest in hanging around cycle shops for hours on end in the hope of been seen. A shop is a place where I buy something, to me its simple, I buy at the most convenient shop at the time who has the stock I am looking for.
  6. Yes, this is true Scotty - I dont want to say too much as I have no doubt when the Pro tour season winds down, the tube manufacturers and trade teams will be lining up for this well researched info. Actually, I have a further report in that my "cheap and nasty tube" parted company with the valve last week, it seems the rubber just perished right through, so strike that one out. My conti tube is now in (again) and still going strong (after I think about 6 or 7 repairs).! - have to haul out my notes and check when I get home. Keep watching this space.!
  7. Its an interesting point - as I am technically useless I would be quite interested in the answer as well - but your reasoning sounds perfectly logical to me. I would say its probably more expensive and technically difficult to manufacture a light tube, so only the top end manufacturers will have the interest in doing so, where of course they can charge an appropriate price to customers who want the expertise, however, the cheap and nasty (heavy) mass manufactured tubes from the east are probably simple and straight forward to manufacture and sell on price alone. .............and in SA the saying that "nothing sells like price" has never been truer, however, I usually subscribe to the notion "you get what you pay for" and always look for the branded manufacturers who I assume have put some research into their product.
  8. I find this rather interesting, I am a complete technical idiot, but what you say about soapy water makes sense to me. In fact, if I am not mistaken a lubricant is also applied when fitting motorcar / motorcycle tyres as well? .............however, I have purchased many, many new bicycle tyres (and quite a number of them Contis) and stood and watched as the "best workshops" and probably "the worst workshops" in the country have fitted them initially - and I have NEVER,EVER,EVER, seen even ONE of them use ANY KIND OF LUBRICANT.!! ..........Has anyone seen any bike shop use a lubricant??? Perhaps, this information should also be passed on to bicycle workshops??
  9. .........Of course we all draw conclusions winbreaker, thats what makes it interesting - imagine if we all agreed, or if we all sat back and said lets wait and see - dead boring!. Trial by media....................Hmmm, I dont know, I think the public has a right to be informed and if this means a "trial by media" then I think its fine. I trust the courts to be impartial (well mostly)and thats all that really matters. I wasnt aware that Floyds lawyers only recieved the documents a few weeks ago - but I am surprised if thats the case as they were quite actively defending him from day 1.
  10. Yes, it has an entire section devoted to sport doping, cheats and performance enhancing via drugs or other means - not quite balanced rather leaning towards the athlete in my opinion but still rather interesting. It should be in the usual book stores or its available on Amazon.
  11. Windbreaker, yes I agree I also enjoy the discussion, I dont see it as a condemn session, its simply a few points of view put forward by folk who have some ideas to share - we discuss the state of the roads over dinner, the poor performance of the Bokke why not Mr Landis?? Anyway, lets think about this - have you ever wondered why accused sport personalities hire highly paid solicitors to put a spin on their story - yet Labs dont?? Its simple - they dont need to - they work with hard and fast genetic facts - laywers on the other hand work with words trying to discredit and throw doubt on the reports and they are always a lot more voiceferous. Labs work quietly behind the scenes - lawyers make a lot of noise (in their clients favour of course) Did you know that Tylers solicitors drew up 134 lever arch files of data trying to discredit the labs report which was 12 pages in total - let me repeat - 134 lever arch files as opposed to 12 pages - and they lost, kinda makes you think eh? As the black sheep of my family I studied law and everyone else studied medicine - so when I look at these reports from the Landis camps etc I see a very highly paid solicitor (and a very good one at that) who puts an excellant spin on the story to suit his well heeled client - unfortunately you can only twist the wording so much which is why most still get convicted. widget2006-10-06 02:31:42
  12. Hi Monty, Uummm, lets see...................how about approx 70 years family combined experience in medicine. Where did I say "Landis is guilty" - I said the evidence against him is "overwhelming" - unless you didnt read correctly thats not the same. Do yourself a favour, spring R149.00 and go buy the book "Panic nation" written by a medical Professor (Prof Feldman) - spend two days and read it, maybe you will re-think your comments. ....but then again, maybe not.!
  13. Hmmm, maybe we can agree to disagree windbreaker - but no, it dosnt strike me as odd that the testosterone levels changed back to normal two days later - the body is a remarkable machine, when functioning at peak condition like these fellows and if it detects a high level of a certain enzyme or hormone, perhaps it will slow down or stop natural production of that product until the levels return to normal - so a high level of testosterone is detected by the body on day 1 - body stops producing testosterone on day 2 and 3 but continues to use this hormone in natural functions and on day 4 it has returned to normal, and the body continues regular and normal production.?? Ask any cyclist who suffers with cholesterol for eg - the common drug limits the production of cholesterol to a point, however if cholesterol drops below a certain point, the body will detect this, and up the manufacture of this enzyme again. If we think about it, the body is always fighting to maintain a balance, it strikes me as normal that it would limit or stop production of a hormone if it sensed it had an abnormally high level at that time, the body will not know the testosterone is synthetic, it just knows there is a high level which is addressed. Remember, testosterone is used up normally in the daily metabolic cycle and is replenished constantly, it makes sense to me that if someone was under massive stress or high energy outputs the body would use up this hormone quicker - hense the return to normal two days later? I dont know - it just kinda makes sense to me.
  14. Personally I dont see reports as been neutral, most investigators are biased in one way or another - I mean we have had massive political investigations here in this country (and in other first world countries) which have brought up findings witch are blatently biased in one or other direction - and proved so later - to get conclusive findings one needs to look at more than one report. I doubt, windbreaker, you are so naive as to believe everything you read, the fact is these labs are highly specialised, athletic dope testing is just a miniscule part of their overall business, they do tests daily where peoples lives, doctors integrity and surgeons decisions hang in their hands and on their reports, if they were in the habit of making these major errors in tests then surely we would be seeing a massive mortality rate at french hospitals?? Honestly mate, surely you cant believe they have no more interesting things to do with their time than maligning American athletes, or that their staff who are no doubt highly qualified men and women with the highest standards of integrity are somehow running some kind of clandistine operation aimed at ruining the careers of (only) american cyclists, then I dunno, I may just despair.!! To me the Landis case is quite clear, the tests found synthetic testosterone, the tests for this are universally regarded as returning correct findings, and unless Mr Landis somehow started producing synthetic products naturally - then I would say its going to be very, very, very difficult for him to explain that away.
  15. Hey, Hey,my favourite Italian cyclist on the top step. Thats just great, Gibbo is really a class act no matter what anyone says. Lets see Basso get these results - actually lets see Basso win half the races Gibbo has in his wonderfull career.
  16. I have riden with various clubs, and there is nothing I hate more than an egotistical minority trying to turn the ride into an unofficial race - sadly this can predominate if the rules of the ride are not clearly and concicely explained BEFORE the ride. Generally, I will only ride with clubs who have the guts to control the packs and keep to predetermined arrangements. Some clubs seem to think the "good old boys" deserve special treatment and are loathe to reprimand them or ask them to consider others who may be struggeling, and this can ruin the ride for many.
  17. Beneke sports academy has a good system, they also break the riders up into groups based on the average projected speed, however, each group rides to the pace of the SLOWEST rider in the pack, so if the projected pace is 30kms and even if 100 of the guys there can ride at 45 kms - the pack rides at 30kms to accomodate the weakest rider. Of course if the weakest rider only gos at 15 kms then there may be some dragging lips, but most folk underestimate their pace and generally gravitate to a slower pack, so its never really a problem. I have been riding with them for 5 years and I have never, ever, ever seen them leave someone behind - it is explained clearly before the ride that if there are stronger guys in the pack they are welcome to ride up ahead for a period, but need to stop and wait at predetermined points for the bunch to re-group. It is rather frowned upon for anyone to not wait!. They have a creed of "Start together - finish together" - works for me.widget2006-10-03 02:04:14
  18. Yes Bruce, I have to second your comment, quite honestly I have always enjoyed Chunks comments and statements, and for all intents and purposes, to me he seems to be a normal guy. As far as I am concerned he has never said anything that would lead me to disbelieve him and even though I havent seen the Carte Blanche interview, and I wouldnt know Chunky if I saw him in the street, I still kind of admire his honesty and forthright manner - agreeing with his business practise or operations, and liking the person or the personality are two totally seperate issues, but unfortunately too many people dont seem to understand that.!!widget2006-09-29 09:04:32
  19. The majority of cholesterol issues with normal healthy people (as most folk here) is genetic and seldom diet related. Doctors love to throw the diet issue up, but the fact is the majority of them, unless they know your life style personally, assume you fall into the "average population" who do little more than walk to the fridge and back in the evening, in fact of all the doctors I know (and my brother is one, so I know quite a lot) none of them could even cycle or run around the block (my brother included). If one is obese (and thats not likely if you are riding a bike or excersizing regularly).......... well thats differant, but generally, unless you are eating 6 burgers a day along with a few fizzy drinks changing your diet is not going to do enough, and you will probably find you will be on these drugs for many years, maybe even life. I can also second the lipitor / fatigue / cramp issue, this is very well known in sport circles but usually only when the drug is taken in highish doses 20mg or so daily. Smaller doses do not really have such an effect, but if it dos, tell your doctor and ask for alternatives. Generally high cholesterol is also a flashing orange light to check blood pressure (hypertension) as well as the two are often found in unison. ................and me - well yup, I have it too although its only slightly elevated, but I have been on 10 mg lipitor daily for longer than I can remember, its now something I do without thinking, and its always better to take a pill daily now, rather than suffer drastic life changing operations later on. widget2006-09-26 05:43:20
  20. Back to the Post.......................!!! I understand what you are saying "the Panda" but this is an open forum and differant folk have differant interests. Personally I AM interested in the Pro / Anti doping discussion going on here and its interesting for me to read differant points of view. To say it effectively is a "non entity" is just your view, by the same token, I personally couldnt care two hoots, about say "the vets legue" in the Western Cape, but I respect the rights of others to post on it here who are interested. Sure people are people, but thats not an excuse to stick your head in the sand and pretend its not there, when I listen to the news they tell me about the problems in Hungary, Thailand, the Zuma trial etc, they dont tell me the price of eggs went up yesterday, even though the issues in Hungary and Thailand and Mr Zuma have no bearing on me and the price of eggs do!!! - Personally I like to know whats going on around me irrespective of how it may or may not effect me. widget2006-09-23 02:07:51
