  1. No-one is getting upset. I've been organising builds and other things for years, somedays we get 30 others 2.. I highly doubt a lack of enthusiasm around pulling aliens will make me cry. I could be wrong but I'm sure you showed interest at one point on getting involved? I still replied and explained that the Friends of Tokai group could be the way in for people interested in helping and having a look. Your avatar makes me think it was you but maybe not. Then on the issue of who is invited. Why does an open invitation need to be exclusive? That just does not make any sense. Sure, some people are looking for personal invitations but volunteering doesn't work that way. If you want to help, there are resources where people can find out how to get involved - It could even be the library notice board but we have progressed from those days, thankfully. How many of us still go to the library? How the groups decides to advertised is really up to them. Facebook is easy and convenient and has quite a wide reach, wider than the hub it must be said. TokaiMTB is still happy to link articles back to the hub through twitter and fb.
  2. I think as individuals we also have some responsibility of finding out. You were most definitely invited. It's one of the few places you are not a walker, walker with dog, horse rider, mountain biker, anything other than someone who cares. you are welcome to look around where the group is working as much as you like.
  3. Great question. I think they are working in the lower plantation again but with enough response they can organize an upper slopes effort. Friends of Tokai Park meet every second Thursday (I think it's Thursday) and there is usually a few days notice on their Facebook page. TokaiMTB also retweets and shares any work that gets done on the upper slopes so you have a few places where the info is passed on.
  4. That's where two guys take the lead clearing bigger debris, one brushcutter follows, then two guys with spades to dig out problem roots and a few guys behind to shape and rake the trail. The alien growth really is not our problem..
  5. Ja, not YOUR job. You were probably doing something more important like filling the bakkie or pushing heavy wheelbarrows while the rest of us made sure the beers stayed in the shade.
  6. Ah well. I saw that as more factual considering I did not see him at any of the builds, certainly in 2014. Besides, we pulled aliens on every build but then you wouldn't know this either. Here's two tweets calling for help. Total (mountain biker) turnout - or should I not state the obvious? https://twitter.com/AMA_TokaiMTB/status/690898703406764032
  7. It was mandated to work on trails and we still didn't see much of you. If it was mandated to pull aliens, we would have a turnout of one - but only if you could make it.
  8. Why must we speak in extremes?
  9. ..you mean where it takes 1 person 33 years to clear Tokai of all the aliens? Don't know, you did the maths.
  10. Ai Tim, there is only one reality here. The one where the place was closed and the aliens bound to come up. As I see it there are MUCH better ways to spend the people's money than to 1.) raise R150 000 to cut a 45m line of trees or 2.) raising part of the estimated 29 000 person days's salary to clear aliens. The rest without facts is just conjecture.
  11. Well that was a good stretch of the imagination. On the last build day, how many people did you see pulling aliens?
  12. Hope you weren't being serious??
  13. I might have 'planted a seed' about where the 200 saplings should go given the timeframe before the first burns in the area.
  14. At the rock in the distance is a berm.
  15. Covered in Alien. One of the WfW guys giving a sense of scale.
  16. Found this on the slope at the entry to DH1. It's a Silvertree forest!
  17. " that uses a refined version of the DELTA link suspension found on Evil's 26” Uprising" Yup, I've read enough. Where's the queue?
  18. ..very creative . I know the man that heads the bug projects. The fact that port jackson/wattle/blackwood is still a problem in this country means they are still looking for that answer. Although several test sites in the drakensburg has been showing results. No, the method will be to hack sections that show little alien infestation with good fynbos growth and control these areas to act as seeding (wind/animal/bird etc) stores. The rest will need to be sprayed. It is THAT dense that working for 3 hours in one spot looks like you've been on a smoke break for all that time and stand a very good chance of contracting emphysema.
  19. The green is a sea of alien. My mind was blown! The patchy brown/grey is the fynbos left from the hacking days. Friends of Tokai/SANBI/SANParks have worked out quite an interesting scheme to get rid of the alien. By all means it should work.
  20. Nah, it won't be that regimental, in terms of handover, yes but for access, maybe not. We have worked out several possible methods of entry but that said, the original proposed date for ALL pines to be removed from the upper reserve before the Elgin fires, was supposed to be end of March. Seems we may need to request one of the solutions which is to cut to a certain distance from the road where falling trees don't pose an immediate risk but even this is tricky as the slope means the trees still need to be dragged down to the road, meaning lots of logging activity where riders will want to pass.
  21. But there are trees, a lot of them and they are mostly dead. Was up there last week monitoring cutting progress. The horse riders are hesitant to open the original route we inspected and proposed. They are feeling like they could be driven from their area where they have sanctity from fast bikes, and rightly so. There is only one access route that extends 1 km of straight downhill. They are however open to the alternative route that allows entry and exit through the 'plantation'. I'll be presenting again on the 12th.
  22. Approval? Will take a few weeks to draw up the responses... end of May-ish.
  23. I think so, it was a copy and paste. Is it the part where not only is Gavin Bell still around, and not fired/suspended/resigned as was recently mooted, but is also now the acting Park manager to top it off?
