  1. Joh. Last year was not this hard on my body. Think the heat had much to do with both my quads seizing up today.
  2. I managed to hit that sub 5 reasonably easy this year as well so am thinking the same. Doing the False Bay this weekend as my last long training run, will be using it to check out the race pace and nutrition. Although by now it should really be dialled in.
  3. I was hoping that I would still have time to get to that level, but seeing as we the same age I guess it’s game over for me [emoji23].
  4. Strange how I used to think that it was until I hit 40 myself [emoji30].
  5. Normally when my left knee starts bugging me I change my shoes. By then they have about 1200-1400km on them. Guess weighing 65kg has it’s perks [emoji51]
  6. If I recall correctly I think the clubhouse sees me about thrice a year. Two of those being the Comrades socials before and after. I however make use of the club gazebos after races much more often. Have met many club friends away from the clubhouse in and after races. I always make a point of marshaling at our club events, it is only a ten km in January, a half marathon in July and we also do the FNB one run. For three mornings a year I can run any other races and appreciate the effort other clubs put into organizing their events. Ps not judging anybody else on what works for them just my humble opinion.
  7. With only a small portion of the fee going to ASA and a sense of loyalty to my club I will probably purchase a licence. Can’t see myself actually utilising it this year though.
  8. A newer race more or less around the same time is the Hemel en Aarde Marathon organized by oom Wietse in conjunction with the Caledon Athletics Club. Cango is definitely easier but I enjoyed Hemel and Aarde more.
  9. Ah yes. Wonder if the lady with the B seeding that didn’t make the first cut off was one of them. Or the gentleman that ran faster splits in the last 20(?) km’s than the actual winner that started off averaging more than seven minutes per kilometer? Still cannot fathom why you would want to cheat like that [emoji2363] Edit: Went delving into my Facebook history and then Comrades historical results. The gentleman mentioned above has indeed been disqualified [emoji1419]
  10. Wow. Makes me quite depressed about my so called ‘speed training’ this morning [emoji1787]
  11. I have been looking for this as well. Also use the First Ascent ones and in a race half of my Tailwind powder ends up everywhere else except in the bottle. Have been pondering a move to a collapsible cup because of this.
  12. Since the Wietse group runs were stopped due to Covid I realized I can comfortably do a solo 30km run on my own using only about 300 ml water with no issues. I prepared myself mentally to carry my own water once activities resumes. Only issue is that during Covid my wife realized that she also enjoys running so my only option of a second during the longer events is now gone [emoji2363]
  13. Wouldn’t it be a down run next year as well?
  14. When they decided to align Cape Town marathon with the international calendar by moving it to October I decided that last year was the last one I had run. I personally don’t see what the hype is about it, have always enjoyed Winelands more than that. However if an earlier date for it does materialize I would probably do it. Heck I’ll probably do any race you offer me now. If Comrades Does go ahead in September it would probably have consequences for the Washie though. Which would be a shame as I had decided that the time was right for me to start thinking of attempting one.
  15. Sadly it’s not just limited to runners but cyclists and walkers as well. The thought of stepping into a pothole or even worse, an open manhole means I run with a headlamp even if it’s needed for just for twenty minutes. What’s mind boggling to me though is when I’m out on my run and I see a cyclist come past kitted out to the nines with no lights front or back. Yet the commuter behind him had somehow managed to scrape together enough bucks for the MrPrice Sport cheapy. Even worse the runners running with their backs to traffic in a group wearing dark clothing. Or the guys when you insist on talking the outside path thus forcing you to step into traffic with your back to it. If only common sense was common [emoji30].
  16. To be honest I just can’t see myself running with earphones and my phone. Could still run with my phone but the thought of listening to anything while running is what bugs me. Have worked out a route that should be challenging enough to keep me interested but don’t know if I care enough to actually enter.
  17. Must admit my pb’s up to half marathon have always come unexpectedly in the middle of high mileage training weeks. This should serve as motivation to up the mileage but as a shift worker there is just no time to do it. Can’t fit two sessions a day in to my schedule and having two rest days a week seems much more beneficial to my body’s aches and pains than forcing extra mileage on it.

  19. My bakkie was due a service and I dropped it off at Reeds N1 City this morning. Due to there being no drop off service I elected to run home as opposed to waiting for the wife to finish the school run. Halfway through the 12km run home it hit me, this is the reason why I aim to be as fit and healthy as possible. Not for the medals and the goodie bags but actually being able to live and experience life as comfortably as possible. What an enjoyable experience. Seeing the sun come up while running never gets old, testing the legs on unfamiliar roads and hills was awesome and comparing where I was a few years back in terms of fitness made me realize how fortunate I am to be injury free. Have a great day out there everybody [emoji1474]
  20. Nothing better than seeing the sun come up on a run. I use a head mounted light as well, cheapie that I bought years back and just never got to upgrading. Does the job well enough as you only need it for an hour maximum in winter. Also despite the obvious advantage of not twisting an ankle on a run the far bigger advantage is that cars and cyclist spot you much earlier.
  21. I had the unfortunate incident with last years Three Peaks that my phone popped out of the pouch on my pack and shattered the screen. Hence me being quite worried about it. Luckily I don’t need it on the road that much but on the trails definitely. Will try your suggestion and see how it goes.
  22. I’ll start off by saying that I haven’t tried it on the trails yet. In terms of comfort I found it to be exactly what I hoped for. It easily took my soft flasks and none of the jiggling and movement I had with the backpack. However, the compartments at the back are inaccessible to me without having to stop and take the vest off to access it. That in itself isn’t a deal breaker as I can theoretically stow everything I would need to access in a hurry in front. The issue though is that none of the pockets have drawstrings but are instead elasticated. I would feel really uncomfortable stashing a phone in there and having to worry about it popping out unnoticed. Also once the elastic starts wearing I don’t know if it would hold my bottels securely? Like I said I would use it for my 30km long runs on the road with no issues. I would hesitate taking it out on the trails and having to worry about losing my phone or keys. Might have to strap one of the other belts for the sole purpose of carrying my car keys and phone.
  23. I have pulled the trigger on the Aonijie yes. Have taken it for a run and as I told the wife it is good enough for road running but will probably end up buying another better suited for the trails. Ok I didn’t tell the wife that as she would undoubtedly point to the cupboard full of belts/backpacks/bottels that were good enough for the road/trail/etc [emoji2363]. Thanks for the link [emoji1474]
  24. Thanks for the feedback guys. Delivery should be on Thursday so should try it out on my long run this weekend.
