My planning cycle runs from May to April of each year, so still have 5.5 months to go. Sunday is race day.

For any race, I o up carry one tube, a bomb & valve, plus 1 tyre lever; then add phone and some gels, plus car keys (if I’m driving). There are so many people that can potentially help, so carrying the kitchen sink isn’t necessary. I’ve been helped by, and helped, people over the years, which makes this event a little more special compared to other events.

2006 - the wet year. the finish was on R55, and not Kyalami as indicated on the entry form.

We finished on the main road (R55) on the uphill before Waterfall drive (before the left turn to the Waterfall Equestrian Estate was finished). The year prior (2007) we finished in the uphill towards the polo fields (to the right of the R55) and the year before that (2006) was the wet year, where we finished on the main road too (I have a photo of me crossing the line in the wet). 2002 - 2005 all started in Woodmead, and headed out on the M1, and all finished on the track. 947 Cycle Challenge 2002.gpx

2008 went through town, and I remember the accelerations out the left-right turns to stay with the bunch. Shouldn't be hard to recreate this one.

Alberton AC’s 10km and 21.1km event took place today. As the route passes by the house on this double lapper course, I couldn’t resist riding the route, to see who I could find. Found 3 friends along the way, and a few happy folk… the rest seemed focussed or tired. Did the event twice in 2018/19; a lot easier on the bike, especially those negative gradients. Like road events, the turnout seems to be down compared to pre-Covid years; at least judging by the number of cars parked.

I have the routes in Strava from 2009, and I remember sharing the routes on BikeHub. i can share the Strava routes tomorrow, and perhaps find the post with all the routes from possibly 2002.

My 2021 route shows 11.

Both are there... the last two on the list, on my route map.

My course file shows 7. I would imagine the missing ones are too short to be considered: before Kyalami (900m @ 4.6%) the mineshaft in Kyalami (500m @ 5.9%) Drags of Douglasdale (2Km @ 2%) Braamfontein (1.2Km @ 2.5%) There are a few other short bumps on the M1 (after Jan Smuts and Grayston offramps). I don't have those showing on Strava, so not sure about their details).

Edit: without knowing the actual start line, it's a guess. In all seriousness, last year's route with this year's added distance. S = the point where timing started F = new finish Only 1.2Km longer. With the extra roll out under the Soweto Highway (red line), it might be closer to 97Km, maybe a dyslexic race distance of 97.4Km.

I would be happy with 99.99Km
