  1. Karooryder's right. I've never felt as *** as on tat PC stuff. Actually, I lie. I have felt kakker, but then the substances were more illegal than EPO. Eat more protein, cut the carbs. I stopped munching biscuits and it looks much better.
  2. It's the helmets, I tell you. You can't go fast with a helmet.
  3. Perfectly.
  4. And it's only the 7th of January. Well rested Hubbers all returning, well rested, to joust! Love it. If I was American, would I still be cycling on the "wrong" side of the road? I find it much easier to greet other cyclists when they pass closer to me. Why, I can even say a cheerful "Good Morning!" and be heard. Perhaps we can even high-five each other as we pass? I like being on the opposite side. Opposite is good. We must always question received "wisdom".
  5. If one person sees it and takes note, that's enough for me. I think we must do all we can, using whatever we have, wherever we can. Try it, you'll like it.
  6. Joe Low has the simplest definition. Blue signs with white text are used on freeways, green signs with white test are used on national roads. You can (legally) ride where there are green signs, but not where there are blue signs.
  7. I'll agree that I often find taxis more respectful than other drivers. I think too that, driving in heavy traffic all day as they do, they might also be more skilled than we give them credit for. Many of their moves are fairly well calculated What I have also found that, if I pull up alongside a taxi at the robot, I'll comment to the gaatjie on the weather or something, how hot it must be driving around all day, whatever. I find they always find they're particularly considerate then, if we're on the same route. Truth is, it really must be hell driving around all day. I know nothing can bring Burry back, but I like the idea of a Burry Stander Foundation.
  8. There's only one answer to this: think what's best. Two examples. I was riding the Wellington-Riebeek Kasteel road one weekend by myself, and felt uncomfortable at how close trucks were passing, the crosswinds, and the speeds cars were doing. So I rode on the wrong side of the road: I could see what the fools were doing and take evasive action if necessary. I also watch the light around dawn or dusk. Part of the road on the way home is straight into the sun, and I know how little I can see when I'm in my own car. I ride on the opposite side because oncoming cars will see me, while I won't be run over by a blinded driver. I agree that generally riding against the flow of traffic in urban areas does make life difficult for everyone. Just think what's best.
  9. Yep, did Cape Town tonight, a quiet ride with much to think of. I'll join the official ride too, but I needed tonight to release some emotion. Thanks moonlightmass for organising.
  10. I just went to the page ... well, that's got me in tears now.
  11. Good. I'm there. 5pm Greenpoint Circle. Let this not be the end of it, but the beginning.
  12. Personally, I'd have done it Saturday morning at about 9am. But it looks as though everyones going off bull in a china shop on Facebook.
  13. Start now! Get your bike out tomorrow and wear black. WE WILL MAKE A STATEMENT.
  14. Come hell or high water or Cape wind, I'll ride tomorrow for Burry, with a black arm band.
  15. Wasn't CWC hit about the same time last year too?
  16. It's this sort of **** that started the Argus, but the message got lost somewhere along the way. The Ride of Silence is supposed to carry the message about death on the roads, but has been poorly supported (and poorly promoted). We need something bigger than black armbands.
  17. Now I'm angry. Now we really need to make a statement - let Burry's death not fade in our memories. Can we not organise a national Critical Mass - a massive Critical Mass - with every single cyclist taking the road to say "THIS MUST STOP!"?
  18. Ah my God. I'm dazed here. Tragedy, tragedy, tragedy. RIP Burry, and my thoughts to all your family, your friends, the MTB community and cyclists everywhere.
  19. Urgh. Urgh. Urgh. All I've done so far is that race out in Blouberg; my bum and mind were numb after about 60 of the 80km. Somebody give me the motivation to get up early and get on the bike!
  20. Serfas Seca - I swear by them on all 5 bikes. Thinking offhand, I remember 1 puncture only. About R150 per tyre, I prefer the wired tyre over the foldable as they're easier to get on the rim. Plus they've got groovy stripes you can colour-code to your bike.
  21. That's VERY yellow.
  22. Oh dear! These subjects are only supposed to be raised on Fridays. Friday is the day! Hubbers await Friday with baited breath, sharpening their claws and practising their wicked-wolf drools. I can see where the OP is coming from. There are tjops who can be aggressive and pushy (no names, no pack-drill), but that's life. Unfortunately, we also can't get away from the reality of the situation. The Table Mountain muggings, for example, aren't rich kids from Constantia. Not that I know of. It's easier for them to rob their parents, and I'm sure they do that with skill. A good friend has actually recovered several bikes and restored them to their rightful owners by exactly this method. So what we win on the swings, we lose on the roundabouts. Maybe one day you'll be grateful that someone somewhere thinks, "I'm not sure about this situation, lemme check it out." Yes, I'm sure there's some old prejudices involved. But then, at the "Museum of Prejudice" (I think it's in the States somewhere) there are two doors in. One says, "I have prejudice" and opens. The other says, "I have no prejudice" and doesn't. Because we all do, in some measure: colour, religion, creed, sex, sexual orientation, politics, age, ugly vs beautiful ...
  23. Bwahaha! Whoops, sorry Crow! I was in a bit of a daze, I get like that when there's lots of people. And then I was late too. All very messy. For those I did meet and chat to, 'twas lekker. The end was a bit of a fizzle though, so maybe we should meet somewhere an hour or two beforehand to actually talk? Did anyone notice it was a full moon, or were you watching the tyre in front?
  24. That would be sartorial suicide, Crow! I'll never be able to ride in this town again. OK, I'm bringing the most conspicuous bike, which is the yellow Colnago with red lettering, as a gathering point. If you miss that, you shouldn't be on the road anymore. I'll be there around 9:15, I think.
  25. It all gets into a bit of a mess if you're looking for anyone. If we all gather on the side closest to the MyCiti station, it'll be easier. More or less. I wonder if I should wear my tuxedo tonight. Or my deerstalker?
