  1. Thanks Meezo! It's definitely a weekend ... I didn't even think of looking there. I wonder if I'll remember to take my timing chip tomorrow. Or helmet. Or shoes. Or bike.
  2. I think I might warm myself in with the 65 if it's as nice a day as today - and I can get 3/4 hour more sleep. Anyone have an idea of the cost? It doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere, including the PPA newsletter.
  3. Haha! Talking about a certain bike shop we both know? I wish I'd mentioned everything I wanted to. Yes, I got the Victoria back but it's been too depressing to really get around to her, so I took her to Nils this week. They/he/it buckled the back wheel - apart from destroying the pump, messing up the pedals, and other little things I don't want to know about. All good your side? What new toys and projects? Come join a coffee ride now it's (supposedly) getting to summer. Sometime.
  4. Hey, we've reached 100 retro pages!
  5. Heartcoppi, those bikes have never been ridden! Nobody keeps bikes that clean.
  6. My theory is that the MTBers have perfected the art of hiding their doping histories, and passed their secrets on to the roadies. Maybe through a third force.
  7. I think you're right. Question is whether the TdF and Giro and others are going to be able to carry on. I have my doubts. We might only be watching re-runs in future.
  8. I thought it was only bikes that are for sale that go on the couch? (Thanks Shanghailoz! Just keep priorities in order - ride, ride, ride first. Photies later.)
  9. R899 is actually a bloody good price. Shanghailoz, I just sent you a PM ...
  10. Soooooo ... anyone gonna bother watching the next TDF, presuming there is one?
  11. Way too early in the season for me. I get tuckered out just riding from Greenpoint to the top of Chappies.
  12. Come now, you can't say a bunch of faceless bureaucrats hiding in a committee are good guys. If so, they'd be the first. So, what about Lance having volunteered for a lie-detector test? Would that satisfy the Doubting Thomases?
  13. Is that where I picked it up? Dammit. I used to read him occasionally early on, until he became more of a social commentator than a cyclist and Oozlum-birdish. Wiki: The oozlum bird, also spelled ouzelum, is a legendary creature found in Australian and British folk tales and legends. Some versions have it that, when startled, the bird will take off and fly around in ever-decreasing circles until it manages to fly up itself, disappearing completely, which adds to its rarity.[1] Other sources state that the bird flies backwards so that it can admire its own beautiful tail feathers, or because while it does not know where it is going, it likes to know where it has been.[2] [2] As seen on the Hub.
  14. Let me salmon here: I still support him (without going through 147 pages). Dope or no dope, he was/is still a supreme cyclist. Maybe a little less stuff in his body (if!) would've made him come second or third. Nevertheless he would've still been consistently better than most. Two, he's done more good than he has bad. Even if. Three, if it's proven that this McCarthyesque witchhunt was off track, there'll never be adequate repair. A short paragraph on page 16, and nothing more. Whereas a life has been pretty much destroyed. The problem with modern media - the internet and social pages - is that opinions rule over facts.
  15. Le Jeune's are getting very popular among the fixie and commuter crowd. South African bikes are, in my opinion, highly under-rated. If you want a fast Argus, it's probably not the thing - you're dealing with 6 speeds where others have 10 or 11; your front chainrings are probably 52/42 where others are 52/39; both these make her harder to get up hills (your ratios are much, much lower than newer bikes). Oh, I see you want a decent Argus - well then, yes, as long as you've got the grunt for the hills. Spares: if the Suntour is OK, there's no reason it shouldn't last - I have a Suntour and a Huret from the 70s and they're both as smooth as butter. You might need to replace the small cogs. Check the pawls on the rear wheel - can you pedal without any slipping or catching? Do they run free when coasting? The splined drive for 5 and 6 speeds is hard to find a replacement for - but it's steel, can take a bashing, and make just need a good clean. Apart from that, hard-wearing bikes that give many miles of pleasure.
  16. Ha! Helping sometimes doesn't work out so well. I stopped for an older woman and her daughter near Smitswinkel, but she kept trying to help which was no help at all. Ended up breaking a tyre lever on those stupid Contis and I think the tube got pinched in the end anyway. She'd already phoned here son-in-law anyway (there must be a lot of long-suffering non-cyclists out there).
  17. What happens if you're just doing your normal ride - say the Smitswinkel route - and you're caught up in the middle of things?
  18. Here ya go, Gummi. Pre and post porn - oooh you sexy baby, I feel like going out to ride you right now. (And the saddle is super comfy.)
  19. By the way Carpet, Matt is a very decent guy. Imagine how Hubber numero uno could help a lady. Edit: can that - Matt & Carpet doesn't have a good ring to it.
  20. I've never tried it, but there's also that Assometer that Fizik has at most bike shops, and many lbs also have test saddles you can use for a trial.
  21. I feel tyred just reading this thread.
  22. Heartcoppi's the man who knows about these things. Even if it's not a Cinelli, it looks rather nice. How does she ride? Dalem, I can't say I rate Raleighs highly, perhaps 'cos my boet had one in the 70s and it was a tank of note. That said, to me, all old bikes are worth something.
  23. Glad you're (relatively) okay Semisub. Always a *** experience, but we can't let it stop us. We can't hand our city over to a few sh**heads.
  24. I was mugged at Gympie Street a few years ago ... the cops knew exactly which house and got my bike back. A little tikhead jumped on my bike in Sir lowry Road while i was talking to someone (1 metre away) but I got that back too. Maybe I've been lucky. But ja, after the Gympie incident I used to ride De waal Drive if going from town to the South. The BRT cycle path issue has been raised at the Albert Road cycle path meeting and many said they prefer the road simply because there are people around (positive and negative though). Surely there can be some way to utilise the security at the BRT stations? There are cameras in the area. And my word, I'm impressed at how quickly MyCiti and Helen are on to this. Damn, I love Cape Town. We'll call Gauteng slaapstad from now on.
  25. The majority of burglaries, assaults etc are by someone you know.
