  2. more than once he referred to the chasing 'pentalon'. what a kn0b
  3. hear hear. What a complete kn0b that american commentator is - he can't even say peloton, he kept referring to it as the 'pentalon'. FFsakes! I couldn't believe what I was hearing.....KeithB2010-05-12 08:26:25
  4. yep, using risers and that's the problem - can only get the brake & shifter to a point. Sure I can cut the grips and put bar ends on, but then not enough room really for my hands without being permanently and fully on the shifter 1/3rd.
  5. Had my first ride yesterday after installing new SRAM Twister shifters ? which BTW I just LOVE ? a really good move, should have done it loooong ago, I can immediately see why those who have moved to twisters never go back to triggers. Anyhow, my only problem is that there is now not enough ?real estate? on the bar to accommodate barends. Is the only solution a new & longer handlebar? Or has anyone had any experience of those clever ergo grips that incorporate barends, and so maybe effectively extend the bar length a bit?? can anyone give me some advice?
  6. are these X.0's compatible with Shimano? can you simply remove the rapid fire's and install these? may need new cables of course, but otherwise it is just a straight cockpit replacement?
  7. +1 Also still waiting for 2009 licence.+2 Also still waiting for 2009 licence.
  8. Guys, Juan serviced both my mtb's last week - and I am impressed! Great job, good price (especially given that he collected and delivered) - there is nothing to complain about at all. My bikes came back looking brand new - and riding like brand new as well (pity I had to ride in the mud over the weekend - but that's another story...) I would definitely recommend Juan, for sure ...
  9. can someone please point me to the thread/s where treatment for roasties is discussed. the breedtsnek descent notched up a score yesterday :-(
  10. I've been wearing contacts for around 30 years now - running, cycling etc. with no problems. Just always wear glasses to keep the wind and dust down a bit. If you are a mtb'er carry a small bottle of saline in your camelback - and on important races I also carry a spare set of disposables with me just in case
  11. or ANY mtb trails in the Witbank / Middelburg / Loskop area? Listen, I'm desperate: wife needs to visit her sister in that area for girlie talk/marriage counselling/ husband bashing / etc. No place for me to be - ideally I want to be out riding somewhere while they get on with it ...
  12. does anyone know if there are still mtb trails at Botshabello, just past Middelburg, Mapoooomalanga?
  13. it happened to a guy on our club ride this past Sunday - first time I have even seen one of those links fail.
  14. I think this is true of all Touchline mags - MensHealth, Runner, etc. Often just the US articles with oftentimes NO attempt at all to even try and give a local flavour. Bicycling is the last one I have been hanging in with - but that's about to bite the dust, can't see that I will renew .....
  15. I've ordered a wrist- and a dog-ice from them on seperate occasions, and agree - fantastic service all round!
  16. you can drive a double-cabbie over a Mavic MTB wheel (not that I recommend you do that!) - then all it needs is a new skewer, a new rotor, some spokes tightened - and it's good to go! Let's just say I had an unfortunate incident yesterday - forgot to load my front wheel and reversed over it I dropped it off earlier this morning at the LBS - and they just called to tell me the above good news...
  17. YES - and this should apply in all sports!
  18. I don't give a poke about the riders, I reckon they're all doping to some extent! Some are just cleverererer at not getting caught (for a while anyway). For me the best part of Tour-watching is the fantastic countryside and scenery - followed by perving the bikes and gear
  19. another ex-runner here: 3 Comrades, 10 om-die-dams - many marathons and and much other stuff over 15 years of tar-pounding, all too boring to mention. Knees packed in (well, also a busted ankle from a once-off skydive ) and so I switched to MTB - best thing I ever did, just wish I had done it years ago! Running is boring and skill-less (just put one foot in front of another & repeat ad infinitum, where's the skill in that?) - whereas MTB takes skill, it's challenging and adventurous and a lot of FUN. The only thing running has in its favour as compared to cycling is, IMHO, that the fitness pay-back for the time invested is higher. But that's it ..
  20. My take on what has happened here is this: * That week we had all the holidays I noticed two teenagers on motorbikes riding in the open area alongside St Audley Rd, between Bantry Rd and The River Road. This is on the western side of that Scout Hall - on the eastern side of which the n/shore stuff in the photo has been built. No mtb'ers normally ride in the area where I saw these kids, it is off our trail. * clearly these kids annoyed the local residents, and understandably so * I reckon someone has phoned the Chronicle with a complaint and one journalist Mr Theo Nkonki was dispatched to investigate * he breezed around the area and lo and behold discovered the n/s stuff on the other side of the hall to where those kids were riding * assumption (perhaps aided and abetted by misinformation from local residents, who would no doubt enhance/distort facts to further their own cause) = "all this stuff has been built by motocross and quad riders, is illegal, and must be removed forthwith" * no mention or consideration of quiet mtb'ers who have been riding that spruit for months and months, to the delight I honestly believe, of local residents who are only too pleased to see the spruit being used by folk other than squatters & criminals. * when I first moved to this area 8 years ago, many locals used to walk their dogs along the spruit, and there were relatively few squatters. Over the years the balance shifted, dog walkers decreased then virtually vanished, squatters noticeably increased * almost immediately the mtb clubs took responsibility for the spruit, and cleaned it up and started riding, the balance shifted back again, and I know that those people whose properties border the spruit are delighted about that. * yes, there are currently a lot of squatters again - a function, I think, of great amount of building presently going on in the area * the only residents that I have ever experienced who are not happy with mtb'ers riding the spruit are those who, while out walking their dogs, get startled by an mtb'er hurtling up behind them. And that's also understandable. I believe that all spruit users need to understand that no one group has a monopoly on the spruit, and that we as mtb'ers need to be polite and considerate to others. Nothing difficult or onerous about slowing doen a tad and giving some warning when coming up behind a walker The big problem, AS ALWAYS, is how to prevent the MX'ers and quad'ers from muscling in, and then destroying it for the mtb community. This has happened many times before and in many many places - and we as mtb'ers always end up being prejudiced when we are not the one's at fault
  21. what does this equate to time-wise?
  22. getting to a spin class at a fixed time is a problem for me, so I bought my own Raleigh spinning bike for home use. The flexible timing is good, and spinning is certainly better than doing nothing - but man, IT IS DEADLY BORING. Even with a selection of those Chasek DVD's and an iPod, it's still deadly dull But I need to do some form of exercise every day so I persevere - sadly running is no longer an option due to boggered knees
  23. ok, I was driving past MSC earlier so stopped by and bought one of those camelback cleaning kits. That should prevent any problems developing - provided of course I use it and don't be lazy ...
  24. ja, it's an original Camelback. so does that mean the pipe will never get coated with foul black stuff? I had a Polarpack before, kept the bladder in the freezer (it was desinged for that, it had some blue gel stuff built in which froze and kept the liquid cooler for longer) - but the pipe had this foul black coating I want to avoid that happening again.
