  1. I guess that WT are no longer going to be winning. The New chip looks like it no longer has an ankle strap, so you have to fit it to your fork. A bit of a bugger if you have more than one bike
  2. It would seem that it a 29er will be suited to some courses and a 26" suited to others. X-country racing is probably more for 26"'s and enduro or marathon more for 29er's. due to the 26" accelerating better and being more manouverable and the 29er holding better momentum. Climbing is primariliy about weight the heavier bike i.e 29er will be slower up hills
  3. Barloworld were featured on the news this morning, riding along Marine Drive. One of the riders was riding without his helmet, not a great message for safe cycling. Particularly with all of the unfortunate incidents on our roads recently.
  4. I just lost my breakfast
  5. Sorry to hear about your incident, I stopped riding up Constantia Nek from Hout bay a while ago, the road is just too narrow and the busses and trucks often cut the corners, the drivers often dont realise that the back of a long vehicle will track closer to the edge of the road. If only chappies was open you wouldn't be forced to ride up Constantia Nek
  6. Over the years I have had my bike serviced at most of the bike shops in the Peninsula and every one has on some occasion either tried to rip me off or stuffed up a service The best think I did was to equip myself with the tools to do my own serving, Its pretty damn easy to do most of the work on your bike yourself and you know that you have done it right.
  7. My MTB brakes dont have wings, so is it just roadies that have bad aim? explains why they fall over a lot
  8. It is beyong unacceptable, I want that stale mini bar one, a year old jungle biscuit, some sanitary pads and a sachet with 0.005 mg of arnica. I feel cheated. But we do get a snack at the end. sorry for the guys coming in late, I will be eating your food!
  9. Good tip Mampara, I think I am gonna do that
  10. Just picked up a the cutter for R180, not bad. will report on its performance later
  11. related question, Bike shops always insist that if you change your cluster you also must get a new chain and chainrings, is this true, or can you run older chainrings (if not badly worn) with a new chain and cluster
  12. Another fake letter from a "fake corporate man" I bet that Trevor Mallach doesnt exist. No one in a prominent position of such a powerful brand would write defamitory comments about JZ "a criminal with no brain".
  13. The Park Tool one was about R400, BBB about R280, I also saw a cheeper brand (dont recognise it) for about R200. I will probably go cheep (I will only use it a couple of times a year anyway.
  14. I am looking to buy a cable cutter. Do I need to buy one of those expensive Park Tool or BBB cable cutters or is there something non branded that I could get at a place like Midas?
  15. I dont think that we need "think bike" stickers rather a cycle safe sticker. There are some significant diferences between motor bike and cycling safety issues and a different campagn is important. But great idea. I am sure PPA could put one of their cyclesafe stickers into each goody bag. I think a few good options would be to have a regular drivetime spot on talk radio during the morning and evening peaks. Also the newspapers could sponsor a page on cycling and motoring education / awareness. The Argus as the sponsor for the funride world champs would definatly get on board. Are there any jurnos who could chat to someone at the argus. I am happy to write to the editor, but someone on the inside may help
  16. too bad for those with Zipp 808's I wonder if 404's would be a problem and do you include the depth of a tyre in the calculation
  17. Russell doing massage now, nice!
  18. 1st think is to make sure that your cables and housings are clean and cables not stretched. If your cables are not in good nick, you will not get your shifting to work crisply. The deraileur adjustment is pretty simple after that. I suspect that if the gears are jumping up and down you could have a bent hanger or deraileur.
  19. I know a guy who can do the printing, he should be pretty reasonable and he cycles, a bit.
  20. Its suprising that not more cyclists are hit by busses, most of my close calls come from our friends at Golden Arrow, IMO they are worse than the taxi drivers.
  21. Bridge gives me a discount every time I ask. I have the brains to only ask for discounts on the bigger tickets items that they enjoy decent markups on. The best way to get a discount is to speak to the owners, they then need to look YOU in the eye and tell you no, far more difficult than telling the salesperson.
  22. My Recon has a sticker on the shock that gives you the recomended air pressure based on your weight. I run mine a bit softer because it just seems to work for me. I never bottom out the shock, but if you do you need more pressure in it or a faster rebound The rebound, I would adjust so that it has a pretty fast rebound and then dial the rebound down until if feels nice and active without popping too much
  23. Polar will probably fix it, call IHF products if you want to be sure. I can send the Polar Service card to you, with all the relevant details, pm me you email addy if you want it.
  24. Thats a dodgy belay device Johan, I dont think anyone uses a figure 8 anymore
  25. RIP, terrible news. I dont know how that happened, that spot is on my regular training ride, I have always felt so safe there, wide road and a bit of shoulder.
