  1. Only when there is an acceptance of cyclists as a part of the transport landscape will safety improve. At the moment cyclists are seen mainly as a nuisance and an obstruction to traffic. Only when motorists see cyclists as a simple fact of life, like a traffic light, speedbump or other part of the system that requires a change in driving behaviour, like slowing down etc... will safety improve. At the moment most motorists view cyclists as objects which are out of place and in their environment and thus not deserving of any consideration or respect.
  2. Works well and you will see good short term gains, mainly in strength, but you will plateau quickly with only 30 min intervals. Cycling is an endurance sport; you need long rides, long intervals and hill work to progress. Make your weekend rides count as a balance to the short intervals
  3. There is perfect stuff close to Cape Town, Jonkershoek, Franschoek, Grabouw, Paul Cluver or Oak Valley mountain bike trails. Each of these will probably work, best bet is to get down here and do a bit of a ride around with someone who knows these areas
  4. I think this could kill the East London event, even though the timing in Jan is great for those training for the big guy in April, there are enough half events such as Jailbreak, Midlands and Trirock -Cradle for a warmup. I love the event in EL but not the venue and each year the town seems to go back a decade into decline. I plan to toe the line in KZN, its a great motivator to train through winter.
  5. Dont worry about the sharks, the number of boats in the water will scare them away. You also only really need to worry if you are in a pro and go off in wave one or right at the back
  6. Triathlon. Swimming is great recovery and will build you an upper body and improve flexibility - and you get to rock out in a speedo. Running builds great strength and endurance, trail and mountain running will work wonders for mtb climbing. You also get an excuse to buy three times the gear and get another bike
  7. Its a bit like having casual sex without a condom or playing Russian roulette, not controversial at all. Just Plain Stupid. To the OP you tend to conflate very different issues trying to make your point, a point which seemingly has no real purpose beside being antagonistic. Hardly a credible form of debate
  8. I have simply been avoiding riding my MTB at Tokai due to the prices, and have focused on trail running, swimming and road riding. But with 15 years of riding there and living so close by it is a real shame not to be riding. I will bite the bullet and fork out the cash for an activity permit. What really burns me is that all the cash goes into a SanParks hole somewhere, paying for a bloated system with poor service, when the real hero's of Tokai are the volunteers who keep the trails ridable.
  9. Zuma will probably pay back the money before the seller of your bike does
  10. Is it really the best ultra in SA. is there anyone who has done it who cares to comment?
  11. If you are going to be spending most of your time doing group rides and races like Argus / 94.7 your time in the front of the bunch is probably going to be pretty minimal, which makes the aero bike somewhat redundant. Better aero advantage to looking at your body position (ride more in the drops). If you are planning on taking on a few tri's or tt's then look aero, otherwise stick with conventional
  12. "There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games." - Ernest Hemingway
  13. Contact ASG on the hub, he probably has a few of the old Rudy Project Wingspans for a good price. I don't see any change of a bargain Wing57
  14. Is that the FR 216 from flyxxi? it looks like the one I am considering purchasing, I would appreciate it if you can give me some feedback on build quality, especially stuff like bosses, bb / headset and ease of assembly, internal routing etc...
  15. I don't know if its a fad, but it is certainly a very small niche that I don't see making a very big imprint.
  16. HotChillee for spots one and two on the podium, I will be disappointed with anything else
  17. nothing better than catching the whip around coming down from the top of Ou Kaapse Weg in gale force winds, makes you feel alive (until one day when it won't)
  18. I would compare Tradouw pass to Chappies from the hout bay side, pretty flat gradient but quite a bit longer. Op de Tradouw is more like Ou Kaapse from Tokai side. People seem to forget that these are two different passes, separated by around 15 km. Tradouws pass is awesome - scenic, easy riding and you normally have fresh legs. Op de Tradouw requires some real riding, its a steep and (potentially hot) bugger
  19. Horror stories about their after sale service have steered me away from their bikes I also don't see anything particularly specialized about their bikes but they make fantastic shoes, I wont wear anything else. They also make great helmet and nice gloves.
  20. Yip, three bike rack is the way to go, that way you can fit five bikes onto it
  21. Cool thanks for the feedback, Do you know if you must race in their kit, I have running and triathlon club conflicts

    Littering and PRO's

A solution is instant disqualification for littering outside designated zones, works in Ironman, can work for those that can only do one part of the sport.

    Littering and PRO's

I just use a gel flask, top up with hammer gel before a ride and no littering, sticky pockets, waste etc... and using the bulk gel which come in a 650 ml bottle saves heaps of cash. Win win ekse
