  1. I have always wanted a sub three on the detour, horrible and harder route, but at least there is something to shoot for
  2. I think the concern is that Chappies may be destabilized due to the burning of vegetation and damage to catch nets and stuff. Ou Kaapse should have no such concerns but it wont be very pretty over there
  3. There is a bigger problem here than your search for a bike. Your wife simply cannot know how much you spend on bikes and gear. Being a triathlete I know that costs need to be kept vague. My normal lines are, I got a good deal - I can sell it for twice what I paid. Its less than the cost of a pair of shoes, I exchanged them for my old ones and only had to put a bit more in, you cant put a price on my health - I want to be here in our golden years and my favorite I also got you a dishwasher so we can spend more time together.
  4. I am sure that this was done quite a few years ago. The ladies rode easy up hospital bend waited for the subvets to catch them and then rode the rest of the race with the boys. Will probably happen again
  5. That's the problem, the motorists are angry and cyclists are dying as a result. We have the 1 m law, with three deaths on our roads in the last month lets see if the Courts use the force of the 1 m law to increase the severity of sentences to the drivers of those vehicles that kill cyclists.
  6. Damn and here I am training for the Two Oceans, this could have been my year. Oh well you can take, although not sure about the Fame & Glory, chicks, helicopters etc... perhaps some JC le Roux and a lifetime supply of that sub three kit with the big clock.
  7. A number of sub threes later and I have never remembered or looked at that pace chart during the race. Just suck wheel like a boss and dont get dropped, its not like you are going to solo away from the bunch. Ride smart not hard thats what the Argus is about
  8. Helen Zille cant do everything, Brett Herron is the Mayco member for transport. He needs to act on this. Its time already @brettherron Another Cyclist killed on our roads this morning. I am on my knees, please something needs to be done
  9. I would buy a Ti bike for the same reason I wear a Ti wedding ring. Its something timeless, durable, strong, warm and beautiful. Its a bike for life. There is something fantastic about a material that doesn't corrode, can take a few knocks and get back up again and looks ice cold cool. Blue steel has nothing on Ti, Carbon is the junk food of bikes - throwaway culture, aluminum is just plain utilitarian and boring. I have finally decided what I am going to spend a nice little bonus which is coming my way. Sure its a bit indulgent, a bit lavish, a bit excessive, but life is short, whats wrong with riding a dream bike?
  10. Hopefully the dam temp stays where it is so there are no wetsuits allowed
  11. Plenty of bullets who have done the epic, think the oldest was over 70, no reason why you cant do it at an advanced age, worth getting a good physical before hand though.
  12. I have used it, mainly when I needed to get down to race weight, its very useful to see how your calorie intake balances against exercise and daily needs. I loved it when it was serving a weight loss purpose, and used if for about 6 weeks. Now I dont touch it anymore, but will probably go back once I have winter fat to lose.
  13. As has been said a session or two with a coach, or even a regular / good swimmer is a very worthwhile investment. A few technical pointers will get you on your way. Get some swimming aids, especially a pull buoy, it will help get your body in the correct position. Secondly a kick board will build your leg strength, fins are useful for helping your position and feel through the water and hand paddles will build arm and shoulder strength. Using aids in the pool and doing drills helps the monotony of swimming and works on your technique. I find the best thing is to swim often and long, you will develop the feel for the water the more you swim and your technique will improve. Brett Sutton says that 90% of non-swimmers would be far better served by using aids and instead of drilling, performing swim sessions that specifically address the needs of the physical exertion of swimming non-stop for an hour. Good article, that resonated with me http://triathlete-europe.competitor.com/2014/04/16/brett-sutton-blog-what-irritates-me-the-most
  14. I think I recognize the guy, I see him riding around the Peninsula area a fair bit. I will be out on the road this weekend and in the near future and will keep my eyes peeled. If I see him I will try get a photo that can be handed over to PPA or Cops to get an ID or something. I think the bike is one of the older Raleigh RC 3000's. Best thing this guy can do is hand himself in, he will be spotted at some point.
  15. It really depends on whether you are riding a 26 or 29'er, if you have a hardtail or dual susser. Other key issues are if the saddle matches the grips. Are you running tubeless? what gearing? 27 speed, 3 x 10, 1 x 10? This is a very complex issue. Alright seriously, if its comfortable go for it, the only concern may be a lack of durability in the materials, could get scuffed up a bit easier.
  16. why not look at the On-One Mary bar, lots of sweep, it looks like you will either love it or hate it http://d2plslj6xljffa.cloudfront.net/imgs/products/oo/400_constH/HBOOMA_P1.jpg
  17. Lets see how many Discovery tops we start to see out there, peninsula marathon next weekend is the first big race where we are likely to see some uptake, then Argus a few weeks later then 2 Oceans. My guess is that there will be quite a few, the offer is quite attractive to the newbies who aren't club affiliated.
  18. This is a huge opportunity lost to Discovery, when the first marketing info came out it was full of fantastic promise, now that the selected races have been watered down. The first list had Ironman 70.3 and full Ironman, that promised a really decent potential saving on two damn expensive events, now they are out. I cant see that the offering is worth the hassle and I have to give up my existing club membership to advertise for discovery. This started off as a great partnership - we wear Discovery kit and advertise for them in return we save some cash on race entries. And Discovery and members benefit from being healthier. I run and cycle so thats R900 to register - then I have to write off my existing club membership and ASA licence, lets see if Disco can get their act together, for now its a no from me.
  19. Its almost a month later than last year, which means warmer water and less chance of poor weather. That makes it a real possibility for me, last year the rain made things pretty harsh
  20. its probably more likely that the cranks were removed and replaced with another set. The shop probably stripped the bike, the parts went "missing" and they simply used whatever was around. I just cannot believe that those cranks were stripped and polished accidentally. The bleaching on the chainstay - cant explain. This is pretty weird
  21. I am confused, you say you bent the chainstay in your first line, then in your third paragraph you say that the tube hasn't bent. It does look bent to me. Its probably a good idea to take it to your bike shop to have it looked at, if it isnt bent then its probably best to just ride it, welding could just make things worse.
  22. I see that as a knee jerk response from motorists, little more. Of course there are the lawbreakers but for a motorist to say that they wont give cyclists respect until they are all law abiding is nonsense. Firstly motorists are legally bound to obey the rules of the road irrespective of whether other road users are law abiding or not. Just because one group breaks the law doesn't give the other the excuse to do the same. This is kind of the point I was making in my original post that motorists need to get over the indignation that arises when the see the following"- A cyclist wasting their time by being on the road - the cyclist has an inalienable right to be there, whether training, commuting or riding with his kidsA cyclist breaking the law, riding two abreast etc...A cyclist effectively blocking a lane when a road is too narrow to pass safelyI think that this is the fundamental difference between road users in SA and for example, Denmark, Holland and France. In these countries cyclists are part of the landscape - sure they may behave a little better most of the time, but there simply isn't the degree of animosity towards cyclists that there is in SA
