  8. http://www.24hourmtb.co.za/articledetail.html?articleID=32 I post this to indicate that for us non electronic types, there is hope in the DIY department. Instead of a 20W halogen, you can use a 3W LED downlight for the long beam(123 electronics can help here) and a 1.5W LED (Multiple LED) downlight for broad beam. I use 7 cm of 10mm plumbers pipe for the casing and a end cap (for the end) and a joining coupling to secure the light onto the pipe. Glue together witrh pipe weld. A 1Amp 12V battery fits into a water bottle.
  9. weight saving, go single speed, back pedal brakes In this way you will still have a dual suspension.........
  10. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/97/252849242_373d779ccd.jpg Its a story about AA at a school. THE school was the rabbit and duck school. Every year it would win the running race and the swimming race. THat was until an ANC sport teacher took over and insisted that the teams should be representative of the learner body. So, rabbits were then included into the swimming team and ducks in the running team. For the next five years the school had five drownings, and twenty foot injuries and won no competetion either.
  11. What went wrong at the olympics, nothing. (we had unreasonably high expectations). What went wrong before the olympics- lots and lots. Sport in South Africa is in a general mess. Why? well adminstrators for one. we have lots and lots of people wanting to be administrators for what they CAN GET OUT OF THE POST. like first class travel, ext. I have yet to be involved in one sport (except maybe chess) where adminstrators are not accused of feathering their nests and ego's out of sport funds. In some cases this is just an accusation, in others it is rampant. Good administrators will travel, live eat, ext with or like the athletes (or even in lesser standards) Sport is about the athlete not the administrator. The sport industry. There are many calls to run sport like a business. Some have been very good and have done just that. That is why entry fees are so much, why there are more vets tours than elite tours, why there are no development leagues ext. THere is no depth in sport in RSA because depth comes from getting youth participation, and sorry parents don't pay stacks of money to see junoir lose. The school system. Sport at school is no longer compulsory, and in some schools it id not even optional anymore. No school teacher coaches that provide FREE coaching to the school teams. So no youth to develop and no new coaches coming into the sport. Society's perception of success. Parents want junoir to win, and not just partake. so when junior does not win, parents quit and junior looks for a new "activity" ie xbox. we breeding a nation of quitters. Politics. Remember rabbits don't swim.............KonaFan2008-08-28 06:03:24

  15. Yup, as well as on the head tube. wasn't his fault, someone put a coubled road in his way. really.
  16. almost as intelligent as buying a cracked cervelo.
  17. BMX cycling is an affordable, accessible (hip) way to get youngsters to exercise and involved in cycling as a sport. THe bikes are simple, and affordable (in comparison to a campy kitted colnago race bike). THe sport develops confidence and bike handling skills such as trick riding, jumps ext. THe sport requires exercise and power. It is a great way to get kids into track and MTB. It is safer than playing in the traffic A natural progression is birth BMX, MTB, Track, Road, Track, MTB, Death.
  18. Commuting: ride as if no one sees you. ?Always anticupate for the motorist. ?Remember if he can do something stupid he will. plan your route. ?get your gps out, muse over maps. ?choose backroutes with stop streets, not traffic lights. ?Avoid undulating routes, either go up or down. ?remember very down is an up waiting to get you later. plan alternative routes, important if the traffic is difficult and you need to detour in a hurry. ride at the same time on the same route. ?(unless you do cross country then vary route and time to prevent criminal ambushes) ?In this way cars drivers get used to you and expect you in their space. Get a backpack with refelctive piping or patches on it (and a light maybe). Ride with robust "training tyres" ?they puncture less easily. shower at work.
  19. Okay feedback. Get to a hardware store with electrical supplies. ?GEt either a galvantized or PVC 25mm(for oversized) or 20mm (for traditional) conduit saddle. ?THE PVC "Clip" on better, but the galvanised can be bent to the desired shape. ?Get a bit of flat bar or a flat piece of wood or metal. ?Drill holes in the correct places bolt the light on the flat bit, and then the flat bit onto the saddle. ?IT should grip will. ?FOr better grip wrap the saddle and the flat bit in insulation tap or self fusing rubber tape.
  20. My old solution as to take a bit of wood or flat bar. ?drill a hole in it for the bolt (sunken head), and then use a bit of tube to "grip it" to the handle bars and then two tie cords to hold it down. New idea, I get a "pipe clamp" which is not really a pipe clamp but more a a piece of U with to holes in the end (it is called a pipe clamp, but it is best used to secure pipes to walls.) ?I flatten the U out in a vice to make it more receptive to the handle bars. ?Then a take a T joint or flat piece to go over the top, bolt the light on that, cover with self fusing tape, and then bolt that onto the U (over the handle bars). ?It gives three contact points on the bars and being rubber coated does not scratch the paintwork. ?Will eventually post pics. maybe.
  21. also: The amendments (of the RAF Act) retain the claimants common law right to claim against the wrongdoer only in instances where the Fund is unable to pay any compensation and in instances of secondary emotional shock.
  22. From the RAF site: Claims received and settled by the Road Accident Fund are, compared with other countries on a per distance traveled per unit, too many relative to the income received from the fuel levy. A major contributory cause is due to the ever-increasing number of people exposed to road accidents due to an expanding vehicle population, especially public transport sector. To try and reduce the number of deaths, and to minimize the number and severity of injuries so that fewer claims are lodged against it, the Fund 'invested' R50 million in road safety during the year under review.
