  1. Loose Cog, That I will have to go and measure after work today and let you know. Thanks a million!
  2. I agree with you on that....will take a break after this one is done, but think I've found my new hobby...
  3. nope, even though its not perfect now, its still a huge improvement and my first real attempt...plastidip too modern you know.
  4. Where in Pta East are you based. know for sure the frame is April 1986, but the Shimano 105 groupset and Campagnolo wheels might be aftermarket, so no idea about the seat post. Maybe we'll talk then next week....
  5. Andy, that would be nice but will be in back of my mind always that its been repaired. Will search for another one, and then if I found one, this one will be available to whoever wants it free of charge
  6. What would it have been....just wanna kick myself even more in the arse But to be honest, during the sanding process I became so attached to Eleanor, that I wouldn't want to let her go.....Now to find a suitable replacement seatpost.
  7. Damn.....seatpost cracked. Bit disappointed but oh well...
  8. Seatpost.....
  9. Frame done at last. Not at 100% though but gonna keep it as is. Only seatpost, bars and wheels left. I'm hooked. Frame must be touched up here and there but this I will do once she's built up.
  10. I think the Alan's got one like that. Will have a look, spent most of my attention to the frame, fork and cranks....but Quintonb did an amazing job indeed I like
  11. I must say ( and this is coming from a mtb'er) each hour spent working on the Alan amazes me more. Falling in love with her big time. Will take her to the scales when all the work is done. Now just for a name....
  12. Thanks for this. Yeah must learn to be more patient then I guess Do you use the silvo AND Autosol on all the parts? Probably first the one and then the other? Going to get some more sanding paper after work today and then start again. I thought of selling the bike but that will never happen. Want to be proud of it wand want to ride it. Including the stripping of all the parts, and just the fork and cranks and frame up to now I spent close to 18hours (this is now including weekends and week nights) How would you avoid oxidation? just a regular check and polish?
  13. Its just the seat and chain stays...followed the same procedure as with the fork and crank set of my Alan. It looks ok and better than before, but just cant get it even ( 200, 450, 1000 and 1200 gritt). When I polish, some areas are smooth and shiny, while the rest are just dull. Was even thinking to spray them matt black plasti dip if I cant get it right.
  14. Just need a bit of inspiration here. Struggling to finish the frame. Need to get it properly sanded, but cant seem to get all the areas even (by this I mean, same amount of sanding etc. Don't worry, I wont touch the anodized areas. Don't have any pics with me today. and thinking Im going to start with sanding from beginning....or maybe a day's break will do me good.
  15. You guys dont wanna know. When I started polishing i saw some oxised areas i missed. Out came the copper wire brush ans a resand afterwards and polish. Looking gooooodd
  16. Fork before and after. Not too shabby been learning experience.
  17. Will have a look and see...those felt ones go quite quickly.. Yeh u guessed it...cranks done and fork about to start
  18. I got a dremel type tool from Torque Craft. The machine, extension thingy etc will all the attachements and brushes for 450. Dremel similar was more than 1K
  19. In a sense you are right, but I think that if polished well enough it should be ok. Let me be the guinea pig then, and lets see how it looks after a month or two. Going to use McGuire's (Spelling) wax for the polishing. Or what else would you recommend? I will leave the lugs though, a decent amount of elbow grease should do the trick. Damn its a long process, but the end product will make up for it, and while the flue/bronchitis wont leave, cant think of anything better to do with my spare time. Think I found my true hobby...
  20. Yep, a strange bunch on here indeed...
  21. I would go have a look on bidorbuy.co.za or your LBS perhaps?
  22. Why would you not sand the fork? Asking coz I'm learning all the time. Had some DEEP scratches on the sides. Evem though the sanding sucks big time there's something soothing ans comforting about it
  23. That's it folks, we know now what month and year. The fork is ready for polish. But I will do it all at once when sanding is done.
  24. had disasterous winter....off anti-biotics two weeks ago and now sick as a dog again. little to no training in between,,,,,,,
  25. So my email to Alan Head Office paid some dividends, here is the reply just received: From: Alan-Alberto Falconi [mailto:alberfal@tin.it] Sent: Thursday, August 21, 2014 2:46 PM To: Rudolph Jordaan Subject: Re: Alan Record Hello, as indicated on seat tube numbers, the frame is an Alan Record made on April 1986. About the original bike components, in that time we din’t sell complete bikes but framesets only . The framesets were builded by the local dealers. Regards Alberto Falconi So now we all know guys. The Photos struggling to upload but will be on tomorrow. Keep on sanding!!
