  1. Just from my side: use 150, 300, 400, 800, 1000. 1200. 2000 grit wet sanding paper. Then very fine steelwool and silvo before the final polish with Autosol Metal Polish. Let the sanding paper soak in water for a while before you use it. and rinse regularly. Don't worry if you have to buy a whole tube of polish ect, when the bug has bitten, you're doomed. Looking out for my next one already
  2. So most of you have seen the before pics of my Alan Record. Thanks to Loose cog's help with the seat post and general advice etc its done...Loving it. Still not 100% but the going to keep as is. So without any further delay, please meet Eleonore, after her face lift: Cinelli stem and Cinelli Giro D'Italia bars, Shimano 105 Groupset and hubs, Campagnolo Lambda Strada wheels (tubes topped up with sealant) some no name brand but comfy saddle. Took her for a test ride yesterday pm. It was my first time ever on a road bike but it felt ok. Now I need to decide between keeping her and letting her go. Will go for another ride the weekend and then decide. And yes, the wife isn't aware of the couch pic ok??
  3. Thanks to Loose cog I managed to get a seat post. Took the plunge and bought a few tools I will need and rebuild is to start tonight. watch this space.
  4. I'm starting to like Mondays all of a sudden...
  5. Guys, any luck with the seat posts you might have for me? Otherwise I would have to go for EvanB's option. Managed to bend the right handlebar drop back a bit, and looks ok now. So it will probably be the last bit of cleaning to do. Will carefully inspect for any cracks etc tonight. Luckily I have a spare set of handlebars now in any case. I had a thought over the weekend as well. This here is the first pic of the bike. Now picture her with a white saddle, handlebar tape and also white gear and brake cable housings.
  6. This here is a pic of my headache. The nail next to it shows the distance something can be inserted if welded. Part of me wants to repair it, but then again Im not too sure if this is the way to go. Another hubber pm'ed me about another post he has that might fit. If that doesnt work out, we could talk again. Just dont want to do anyone here in with a broken seatpost. But thanks once again for the advice!
  7. Ok all you friendly people..its a 25.4mm...now the wait! Thanks for offering to help... The handlebars were bent beyond straightning without compromising the alu, but got a good one for 40 bucks..
  8. Loose Cog, That I will have to go and measure after work today and let you know. Thanks a million!
  9. I agree with you on that....will take a break after this one is done, but think I've found my new hobby...
  10. nope, even though its not perfect now, its still a huge improvement and my first real attempt...plastidip too modern you know.
  11. Where in Pta East are you based. know for sure the frame is April 1986, but the Shimano 105 groupset and Campagnolo wheels might be aftermarket, so no idea about the seat post. Maybe we'll talk then next week....
  12. Andy, that would be nice but will be in back of my mind always that its been repaired. Will search for another one, and then if I found one, this one will be available to whoever wants it free of charge
  13. What would it have been....just wanna kick myself even more in the arse But to be honest, during the sanding process I became so attached to Eleanor, that I wouldn't want to let her go.....Now to find a suitable replacement seatpost.
  14. Damn.....seatpost cracked. Bit disappointed but oh well...
  15. Frame done at last. Not at 100% though but gonna keep it as is. Only seatpost, bars and wheels left. I'm hooked. Frame must be touched up here and there but this I will do once she's built up.
  16. I think the Alan's got one like that. Will have a look, spent most of my attention to the frame, fork and cranks....but Quintonb did an amazing job indeed I like
  17. I must say ( and this is coming from a mtb'er) each hour spent working on the Alan amazes me more. Falling in love with her big time. Will take her to the scales when all the work is done. Now just for a name....
  18. Thanks for this. Yeah must learn to be more patient then I guess Do you use the silvo AND Autosol on all the parts? Probably first the one and then the other? Going to get some more sanding paper after work today and then start again. I thought of selling the bike but that will never happen. Want to be proud of it wand want to ride it. Including the stripping of all the parts, and just the fork and cranks and frame up to now I spent close to 18hours (this is now including weekends and week nights) How would you avoid oxidation? just a regular check and polish?
  19. Its just the seat and chain stays...followed the same procedure as with the fork and crank set of my Alan. It looks ok and better than before, but just cant get it even ( 200, 450, 1000 and 1200 gritt). When I polish, some areas are smooth and shiny, while the rest are just dull. Was even thinking to spray them matt black plasti dip if I cant get it right.
  20. Just need a bit of inspiration here. Struggling to finish the frame. Need to get it properly sanded, but cant seem to get all the areas even (by this I mean, same amount of sanding etc. Don't worry, I wont touch the anodized areas. Don't have any pics with me today. and thinking Im going to start with sanding from beginning....or maybe a day's break will do me good.
  21. You guys dont wanna know. When I started polishing i saw some oxised areas i missed. Out came the copper wire brush ans a resand afterwards and polish. Looking gooooodd
  22. Fork before and after. Not too shabby been learning experience.
  23. Will have a look and see...those felt ones go quite quickly.. Yeh u guessed it...cranks done and fork about to start
  24. I got a dremel type tool from Torque Craft. The machine, extension thingy etc will all the attachements and brushes for 450. Dremel similar was more than 1K
