  1. So yesterday morning I saw something that made my day. I was crossing the main road in muizenberg when a car with 2 eldery guys broke down at one of the traffic lights. As you can imagine within about 10 seconds all the motorists behind them started getting very impatient, sitting on there hooters, gestulating out the windows etc. Then along comes this group of cyclists, upon seeing whats happening, they all stop there ride, climb off there bikes and help push these poor guys off the road so the traffic could pass. I like to think if those 2 guys were anti cyclists on saturday, that they are not anti-cyclists today!!
  2. like you I have health issues which mean I cant ride like I used to. My heart cant go over 120bpm any more .... and like you I will still ride my normal bike as much as possible if im riding alone, I just go much slower But where my ebike comes in handy is when I want to ride with my old cycling partners that I rode with pre heart issues. With out the ebike that would not be possible unless I expected them all to sit around at the top of every hill waiting for me. A couple of folk on here do seem to think all ebikers are just lazy with out knowing anything about them or the stuggles they are going through!
  3. Like assuming the lady you saw in Pretoria will claim claim her top 10 QOM on Strava Be lekker
  4. Sorry jackievs ... I misread it
  5. not sure how you can defend the cyclist in an instance like this!
  6. I get judged by people like you regularly I am in my forties and did the ironman and joberg2c shortly before my heart packed up and had to have 2 surgeries and a defibrillator put in ..... the point being that I look perfectly fit and healthy (if I may say so myself ). Generally I just try ignore these type of comments and attitude .... but it does get to me!!
  7. lol .... even before the operations that was not a pretty sight
  8. I landed up with a heart condition and a defibrilator 2 years ago out of the blue at the age of 47 when I thought I was the fittest and healthiest person I knew. Anyways I have to monitor my heart rate very closey now but fought getting an ebike for 2 years. Now I cant believe I waited so long and wasted those 2 years cycling on my own, getting overtaken by runners when going up a steep hill etc. Now I can ride with my old cycling partners again and go out for decent length rides. But the downside is I still look fit and healthy (unless I have my shirt off, then you can see the defibrillator and scars) on my bike so I have had to endure the odd comment about being lazy or cheating etc. I do have a bit of an ego so can be hard to turn the other cheek sometimes ..... still trying to work out the perfect comeback line when this happens
  9. also, not all optical straps are equal. I find the ones that strap around your arm are great, if I wear a chest strap and my optical polar arm band at the same time the readings are pretty much identical
  10. I'm also using the polar OH1 optical strap on the arm. Very happy.
  11. my feelings exactly. It is not like he wanted his run to be ratified in official records or anything like that.
  12. There have been a few triathletes who have also cycled at world tour level. Currently you have Cameron Wurf who came 5th at the Hawaii ironman last year and is currently cycling world tour races for Ineos.
  13. Shaper, I guess the point I was trying to make is that people just need a bit of perspective, and that in the grand scheme of things delaying for a year is not the end of the world. To be honest my wife says I am bitter and angry about my new situation and she is probably right!
  14. Haha, Ironmen/women make me laugh. Only they will compare themselves to olympians. I suppose they are the only sports people other than olympians that tattoo the race logo onto themselves. Oh, and I have done the ironman, and really it is just another race. While training for my last ironman i was diagnosed with a heart condition (dilated cardiomyopathy) at the age of 42, so can now do nothing more strenuous than ride an e-bike ..... and that is a permanent situation, so really if you going to fall apart just because you have to wait a few months, or maybe a year if november does not suite you, then maybe you have bigger problems.
