  1. Not nice to read about these stories. I left SA just over a year ago, primarily because it was no longer safe to cycle in Cape Town, (and I also find electricity a useful thing thing). Anyway, before I left I managed to get port/harbour access so that I could cycle through the harbour and avoid Paarden Eiland and Woodstock and the need to chance it on the N1. It was well worth the effort to get a permit and not that difficult at all. (I seem to remember that the permit had to be renewed every 90 days). You just need a letter from your company (or from your self if you are self employed), that says you have customers to visit in the the harbour as well as a certified copy of your ID and then go to the office in the Port Tower (next to Shimmy Beach Club). They will give you a paper based permit. Put it in a plastic sleeve. Show it at the entrance and exit. Stay safe.
  2. Don't people feel ripped off when paying over 170k for a mountain bike? When you actually add up the cost of the components, wheels and suspension you left with a questionable cost for the frame. 6 months of hard riding and half the components are toast.

  7. There is a post on Facebook today about a cyclist attacked and stabbed in Wynberg, Cape Towns. There are graphic photos. Stabbed in the leg. Hectic.

  9. When are you flying? With Emirates not flying, I am hoping to fly around the 18th of March on Qatar. Would be interested to hear your experience. Fortunately my bike is only around 10kg. When I flew to JHB in December, the EVO bike bag with the bike and lots of clothes came in around 22kg. Do you know if you need to pre-book the bike bag / sporting equipment with Qatar ?
