  1. Who cares? Claim "Salvage Rights" and take the car.
  2. 3-4 small boiled potatoes for rides over 4 hours. Boiled Eggs Dates Enduren. 5 scoops in a 750ml Bottle. Take 2 bottles on longer rides and a sachet of powder if you ride over 4 hours. Enduren Energy bars. Not sticky and chewy. Taste like a Muesli bar. Sandwich with Peanut Butter or Nutella Red Bull Power Shot for the last 10km of a race or just in case I need a boost somewhere. These are items I like, you can replace brand names as you wish. The Spuds on a long ride are a winner
  3. Going in on price is not going to make it sustainable. If the tracks are used a lot, then upkeep will cost money. I can't imagine that even out of town you are going to get such cheap labour that R20 per rider will bring in anything significant to cover maintenance costs. Your land owner friend would have to consider the trails a labour of love. Since they are not cyclists, that will most likely never be the case. Approach this project from the other side. Forget about the money, because charging for trail access won't make you any decent money. It's the add-ons like a restaurant or coffee shop which bring in the cash. Build a trail network which people want to come and ride and you don't even need to start looking over the fence to the next farmer at this early stage. You have nothing to entice him with. He will come knocking when he sees all the cyclist's cars queuing to get in over the weekend. Make the whole package attractive: trails, facilities and food. There are enough examples out there, one doesn't need to reinvent the wheel. I wouldn't be so mad on sharing the trails with 4x4 vehicles, so your friends will definitely have to develop other trails. Just riding jeep tracks, as others have said, is not going to make me rush out of town. In the end your friends are going to have to build Mountain Bike trails because they want to and not for the money. Either way, Good Luck.

  5. We are busy setting up the Table Mountain MTB Forum . A draft Constitution has been put together and we meet again next week to discuss further. Once we have set up the Voluntary Association, there will be a public meeting to elect representatives and we would like as many of you to be involved in this process. Once we are ready to go public, appropriate announcements will be made in the press and on this Forum. Drivers behind this initiative are: Amarider, PPA, Tokai MTB, Table Mountain Bikers. The Purpose of the TM MTB Forum is: 1.1.1 The furtherance of mountain-biking, and all forms thereof, in Table Mountain National Park and surrounds; 1.1.2 To establish and provide a forum that represents the interests of mountain-bikers within the Cape Peninsula geographical area; 1.1.3 The promotion of mountain-biking routes and trails within the Table Mountain National Park and surrounding areas; 1.1.4 To assist with security and maintenance of mountain-biking routes and trails in the aforementioned areas; 1.1.5 To initiate, plan and organise mountain-biking events and similar activities within the Table Mountain National Park and surrounding areas; 1.1.6 To negotiate with South African National Parks (“SANParks”) regarding the construction of a mountain-bike trail(s) spanning the length of the Table Mountain National Park, from Table Mountain to Cape Point; 1.1.7 To assist SANParks with the updating and implementation of the Environmental Management Plan; 1.1.8 To affiliate with other organisations having similar interests and related purposes for the due fulfilment of the Association’s objectives. We are doing this properly and being assisted by an Environmental Planning company. This time it's for real.
  6. Pity they moved the race to earlier in the month. I was hoping to make this Pioneer No.3 , but I will still be overseas. Great race, well worth considering. Agree with Nathrix, don't take the Pioneer lightly. Train hard and it will be an absolute jol.
  7. I have a Body Corporate meeting at 6 , so can't make it. If you're going, let me know what was discussed. I would like to get involved.
  8. I tend to agree with you. But how do you measure fitness (perhaps more than skill level) in an email or Forum like this, without coming across like a Dick? Races completed means very little, but might point in a certain direction. Some guys never enter a race , but are super fit. Others act as if they are racing snakes and then end up holding you up after the first couple of meters. A group ride needs to be self-perpetuating in order for it to cater for all fitness levels. If a weaker rider oganises it, you get the fitter ones staying away and vice versa. I'll ride with anyone, stronger or slower than myself. As long as we get on. I am pretty much committed to setting up a regular ride, but if nobody pitches, then I also change my schedule as it pleases me and might not ride on that day. I tried it with the weekly Night Ride, but the same thing. No commitment, so I left it. The only ride which seems to work is when I give notice of a longer ride out of town, like Grabouw or Wellington. Then the okes are keen to come along. When we rode Groenlandberg, we were a group of 10, guys and girls, slower and stronger riders. It worked out well for everyone and we all had a great day out, even though it rained. Maybe I should put out a call for a ride out in the sticks again.
  9. HI DevC. Uptake is rubbish, to put it mildly. I think that most riders pretty much do their own thing and find it a hassle to try and hook up with other riders outside their circle. I think it's a Cape Town thing and not likely to change. The TMB forum is hardly used either, it just shows how little cohesion there is. But, F it, I'll keep doing my thing.
  10. I hope for the sake of the riders that the time keepers are bit more paraat this time! Last year my wife won the 21km Ladies race and was 10th across the line, but she was not called out or informed to be at prize giving. She had no idea she had ridden so well (she is no racing snake), so we went home after the race and only found out about her win when we checked the results on the Net on Sunday. In defence of the organisers, they did give her a R400 Sportsman's Warehouse Voucher after the fact, but in my opinion, it is nice to be recognised by the other riders for a good performance. It was her first win even on a bike and I think the time keepers did a shocking job of monitoring who the first 3 finishers were. How difficult can it be when the first lady arrives as the 10th rider!?
  11. I have Organic compound pads on the back and metal pads on the front of my XX brakes. The rear brake is much quieter than the front when braking. Try organic pads before you do anything else. Just remember that you may have to re-align the calipers when you put new pads in. They new pads rub against the disks and there is very little space. You may want to sand the pads down a bit before putting them in.
  12. http://vimeo.com/27427319 An hour out of Cape Town, the route to the Stetteynskloof Dam was a very pleasant discovery. 14km from the gate to the dam , up the valley on a dirt road. Climb one final hill and then drop down to the dam wall. On this day there was not a breath of wind ,with the mountains reflected on the water's surface. An ideal training route or a quiet dirt road to ride with the family. Go out and find it. It's amazing what you can find within an hour's drive from home. Men's please. On Home Turf: On our doorstep we have Table Mountain to ride on. Some challenging jeep tracks with awesome views. Superb Night riding to the Blockhouse to check out the City Lights. Go to www.tablemountainbikers.co.za to see what we are all about.
  13. I ordered on the 27th of May and my order is at the Post Office , ready to collect against the usual fees. Standard Mail option, I think that's normal and to be expected. So no delays due to the Temp Staff strike at the PO.
  14. If you have ridden HT all the time, then perhaps consider sticking with it. A dual will give you some added comfort, but you sacrifice weight. 29er for taller riders or if you are below average height, but very fit, then a 29er could work too. Just because everyone's riding 29er's , doesn't mean you should too. I have seen plenty riders on 29er's where it's clear they are not right for the wheel size. When buying a bike, wheel size (26 inch, 27.5 inch which will come or 29 inch) should factor in as much as frame size.
  15. don't disappoint me ! I was convinced the Marque is German.
  16. Looks the best too, go for the Merida. And it Tsherman Kwohlity!
  17. So the Epic hype starts again . If you're either a strong rider (good climber) or a taller person, go for a 29er. Dual will give you more comfort , but if you are used to the HT already, stick with it. I did this years Epic on a Dualie and my partner rode a HT. My ass came off worse than his.
  18. Will most likely do that. But I'll just go out for a ride and will most likely meet someone.
  19. I'll be in George for the next 2 weeks (4-15 June) and would like to go out for a ride with a group or someone who knows the area. I head back home to Cape Town over the weekend , but late afternoons I would like to try and spin the legs. Staying at the Town Lodge and will have my own transport.
  20. Hi there Victorious Secret. Thanks for mail.I still go out and ride on a Thursday, but since it's pretty much me on my own, I ride at my own pace and do some intervals. From what you wrote I would say that my pace may be faster than yours and you might find it hard to keep up. The terrain is not that technical, but there are long uphills all over the place. I am trying to get more interest in the group rides going , which would then bring out riders of varying abilities and be more suitable for you. Please keep an eye on this Forum for updates. I am out of town for 2 weeks as of Monday so nothing will happen during the week in that time.
  21. Yup, bought from CRC a couple times and know the drill. Have never waited more than 10-12 days for orders though.
  22. I do Night Rides on Table Mountain when I can. If you feel like a bit of an adventure, keep and Eye open on the Hub for the when I next go out.
  23. Placed an order on Sunday. It's still in "Processing" mode. I took the free shipping, so I guess they can take a little longer to pick the stock and pack the box.
  24. Action Photo took pics at the Sani Trail. I got a whopping 6 images for 3 days of riding! If I want all of them, I have to pay something like R 250. None of them are spectacular , but what do you expect from 6 pics which have to represent over 200km of riding. One image was from the Finish, so it's 5 pics from the entire route. A bit disappointing.
  25. I can't ride a 44/30. I guess that's why the crank is on Special. I ordered the 40/28 from CRC, much closer to the 39/26 XX combo I have on my other bike.
