  1. I'd also be interested to find this out. Don't think my current apply-back-brakes-and-try-balance-the-bike-on-the-bathroom-scale is too accurate?
  2. I second that idea!!!
  3. Ja - valuable lesson learnt Thanks for the advice guys. I'll try find an engineering place in durbs that can help out. But for now - I'll try the 5 bolt thing out
  4. Thanks for the offer Dustman - do you reckon local bike shops would be able to assist with this?
  5. Unfortunately it's on my brand new easton wheelset so definitely need to get this fixed
  6. Hi Guys, I recently installed my brand new XT brake set onto my bike, but one of the bolts on the front rotor won't take. It just keeps turning and turning. The other 5 are fine. I've tried putting more loc-tite but still no joy. I also tried swapping it out with another bolt on the rotor, but that didn't help either. The other bolt also just turns. Is it possible that I over-tightened the bolt and sheared the rotor? Anyone have any advice on how to fix this? Thanks!
  7. Awesome! Mind telling us what you paid for it? Must have cost a packet given it's 1 of only 21 in the world!
  8. Big to Thule in Durban as well. My bike rack was looking a bit worse for wear after a few good years of service, so I took it back in to see if I could replace some of the parts. The guys at the shop not only helped out with smiles on their faces, they also replaced all the rubber straps and holders for free. All in a matter of minutes. Bike rack is as good as new! Now that's the way to keep customers happy!
  9. Hahaha - ja I also cam across this a while back. If you check out the comments on the site, you'll see that the test team got ripped to pieces for the methods used to test. There does seem to be very little difference between the XT's and the SLX's in terms of performance though. The XT's calipers are 1-piece as opposed to the SLX which is 2-piece so 'theoretically' the XT's should lose less braking power. Other than that the XT's are less prone to brake fade, weigh a bit less and look cooler
  10. Now now ladies... please drop the handbags before someone gets hurt
  11. Very nice guys! Well done. Just a suggestion - would you consider locking the top user bar to the top of the page so that it remains visible when you scroll down? Would make the visiblity of notifications and messages that much more obvious.
  12. I've also been looking at getting a new brakeset and I ended up choosing between the XT's and the Avid Elixir R's. They both seem to be great brakes. After speaking to a few mates I ended up going for the XT's. Should be arriving this week!

    Polar hrm

I read that sometimes you can get electrical interference on the HRM, but unless you're continuously cycling under powerlines, I don't think this is the problem. Try sending all your HRM kit in to IHF in JHB. They'll run full tests on all everything and hopefully diagnose what the problem is. I just used them recently and they were very friendly and efficient.
  14. It's not a clothing-specific store, but it's one of the best online sites I've come across www.chainreactioncycles.co.uk Lots to choose from, great prices and shipping times are pretty quick - my stuff arrived 4 days after ordering.
  15. Good stuff! Thanks for the info Thumper. Have you had any issues with the rear hub? That seems to be the biggest gripe about them.
  16. Good price! Do you need to do any conversions to run them tubeless i.e. add rim strips / change valves or are they good to go?
  17. Sorry guys - another question on these wheels. I see these wheelsets are both 'tubeless compatible'. Does this mean that the weight quoted excludes the necessary goodies for a tubeless setup i.e. rim strips, tubeless valves, etc.?
  18. Hi Guys, I'm looking at getting a new wheelset and I cant see much of a difference between these two wheelsets apart from the XT's being a few grams lighter and a bit more expensive than the SLX's. From what I've read on the forums, the XT's biggest problem seems to be rear hub failure, but I haven't seen any obvious SLX issues. Anyone got any opinions / experience / advice here? Thanks!
  19. Cool - thanks guys. Think I'll send the all the bits and pieces through to Polar for a checkup. Will let you know if it solves the problem / not
  20. My Polar S720 has recently developed the annoying habit of intermittently not updating the distance while I'm riding. The speed, HR, etc. still update and display correctly so I have no clue that this is happening until I scrutinize the distance display for a few hundred metres and notice it isn't updating. The problem comes ang goes during the ride, but it's seriously annoying not knowing the actual distance covered. Polar have suggested the batteries may need to be replaced, but it sounds like a long shot, so I just wanted to check if anyone out there has a similar problem??
  21. Funnily enough, I came across a section on the Polar ZA website that says they do trade-ins on straps: You can check it out here at the bottom of the page. Hope this helps.
  22. To be honest I haven't actually looked at the Garmin options yet, but I've heard good things about them.
  23. Just be careful with 'downloadable' data. Some of lower-end Polar watches allow for data download to a webpage, but the data is a summary of the exercise i.e. you get total calories, total distance, average speed etc. The higher end models give you a full exercise breakdown showing you HR, speed, altitude, etc over the duration of the entire exercise. I find this to be very useful in analysing my rides. I have the Polar S720i which cost a little more than the CS600 and overall it performs pretty well, and it comes with software for Windows, you can wear it as a watch and the battery lasts for years (although it's not rechargeable). The package comes with your heart rate monitor strap and the speed sensor, but it is also compatible with Polar cadence sensor whic you can buy separately.
  24. Hi, Does anybody know if Shimano will be releasing an upgrade to their existing disc brakes in 2011? They've announced the new XT drive system components with Dyna Sys, but I can't find any news about upgrades to the rest of their XT components. Cheers, Paulo
  25. Howzit, For what it's worth, I'm going through the same debate at the moment. I currently have a GT Avalanche 1.0 hardtail that I love, but I've recently had problems with the brakes and I could do with a new fork (got a suntour X100 that does the job for now). After much searching on Chain Reaction, I've seen that I can spend a few thousand at a time and upgrade the low-specced components in my own time. I'd love to do everything in one shot, but the nice thing about upgrading is that you can search the specials and replace when the opportunity arises. So my conclusion is that I don't really need a new bike just yet, so I'd rather start getting the best components I can now and then one day when I do buy a new bike I'll just move them over.
